Chapter 6 - The Architect's Final Trap

Luciano stood so quickly the chair struck the wall.

The agent grabbed the phone.

“Sit down.”

“Who are you?”

“Special Agent Rachel Mercer.”

“Who do you work for?”

“Today? Myself.”

Luciano looked toward the door.

“Get me out.”

“I can't.”

“Then give me the phone.”

Rachel hesitated.

The video continued.

Anthony held the gun toward Camilla.

Elena stood several feet away.

Marco was near the loading door.

Gabriel was wounded but conscious.

Anthony said something.

No audio.

Then he lowered the gun.

Luciano exhaled.

Rachel said, “It wasn't aimed at her.”

Luciano looked closer.

A man had been hiding behind Camilla.

Anthony had shot him.

The attacker fell.

Camilla ran to Elena.

Luciano sat slowly.

“Why are you helping?”

Rachel placed documents on the table.

“Anthony contacted me two years ago.”

“You're the federal agent he trusted?”

“One of them.”

“I thought Crane compromised everyone.”

“Almost.”

Luciano looked at her.

“What do you need?”

“Ledger 17.”

“You can't have it.”

“Then Crane wins.”

“If I give it to one agency, he buries it.”

Rachel nodded.

“That's why we don't give it to one agency.”

Luciano thought of Isabella.

Release the records.

Multiple jurisdictions.

Everywhere at once.

“My wife said the same thing.”

Rachel looked surprised.

“Isabella?”

“You knew her?”

“No.”

Luciano looked closely.

She was lying.

He almost smiled.

“Apparently everyone knew my wife except me.”

Rachel sat.

“She contacted me once.”

“When?”

“Seven years ago.”

Before the diagnosis.

Luciano said nothing.

“She told me she was building a failsafe.”

“Did you help?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought she was another criminal wife trying to protect herself.”

Rachel looked away.

“I was wrong.”

Luciano understood something then.

Isabella had planted pieces everywhere.

Federal agents.

Anthony.

Camilla.

Sofia.

She had known no single person could be trusted with everything.

Not even Luciano.

Especially not Luciano.

“How long until Crane moves the money?”

Rachel checked her watch.

“Less than six hours.”

“What happens then?”

“He controls everything.”

Luciano smiled.

“No.”

Rachel frowned.

“What?”

“He thinks the foundation is Pillar Seventeen.”

“It is.”

“No.”

Luciano remembered Isabella's wording.

Financial pillars.

Not organizations.

Not accounts.

Pressure points.

He suddenly understood what Camilla had done.

“Get my daughter.”

“At the warehouse?”

“Yes.”

Rachel made the call.

Minutes later, Camilla appeared through an encrypted video connection.

“Dad.”

“You signed the transfer?”

“Yes.”

Rachel looked furious.

Luciano smiled.

“Good.”

Camilla understood.

“Mom said you'd figure it out.”

Rachel looked between them.

“Someone explain.”

Camilla said, “The transfer is irreversible for twelve hours.”

“That gives Crane control.”

“No.”

“It gives him liability.”

Luciano leaned back.

Isabella had designed the trap beautifully.

Once Crane accepted the foundation, all seventeen systems would legally connect.

Every secret company.

Every laundering account.

Every corrupt official.

Every drug shipment.

Everything would become part of one traceable financial structure.

Camilla continued.

“Mom designed the system so the person who controlled all seventeen pillars triggered the disclosure.”

Rachel stared.

“Automatic?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

Camilla checked the time.

“Three hours.”

Luciano laughed.

Rachel looked at him.

“What?”

“Crane thinks he won.”

The laughter disappeared.

“But he'll figure it out.”

“When?”

“Soon.”

At 4:46 a.m., Elliot Crane received a call.

At 4:49, he ordered Luciano transferred.

At 4:52, Rachel discovered the order was fake.

By then, three armed agents had entered the interrogation room.

Luciano knew immediately they belonged to Crane.

The tallest one said, “Stand.”

Luciano looked at Rachel through the glass.

She reached for her weapon.

Another agent stopped her.

Luciano stood.

They moved him through a private elevator.

Basement garage.

Black SUV.

No official transfer.

No paperwork.

Crane waited inside the vehicle.

“I told you not to underestimate me.”

Luciano sat opposite him.

“You found the trigger.”

Crane smiled.

“You talk too much.”

“Three hours?”

“Two now.”

“What do you want?”

“Camilla.”

“No.”

“Then Elena.”

“No.”

“Anthony?”

Luciano smiled.

“No.”

Crane's expression hardened.

“Then you die.”

“Probably.”

Crane studied him.

“You really are ready to lose everything.”

Luciano looked out at the dark city.

“I already did.”

Crane frowned.

“My wife died believing I could choose correctly once.”

Luciano looked back.

“I'd hate to disappoint her twice.”

Crane punched him.

Luciano's lip split.

He smiled.

Crane hit him again.

“Where is Ledger 17?”

“Everywhere.”

Crane stopped.

Luciano laughed quietly.

“That's what you never understood.”

Crane grabbed his collar.

“Where?”

“Newspapers. Federal offices. State prosecutors. Foreign banks. Internal Affairs.”

Crane's face changed.

Luciano was bluffing.

Partly.

But Crane couldn't know which part.

“Kill him,” Crane said.

The man beside Luciano drew a gun.

Then the SUV stopped.

Not gradually.

Hard.

Everyone lurched forward.

Gunfire erupted outside.

The rear door opened.

Marco Bellini stood there.

“Move.”

Luciano stared.

“You're late.”

Marco pulled him out.

Gabriel drove the second car despite his bandaged shoulder.

Elena sat in the back.

Anthony beside her.

Luciano looked at Anthony.

The dead accountant looked back.

Neither spoke.

There would be time for that if they survived.

They reached an abandoned Calvano warehouse in Brooklyn.

Sofia was already there.

So was Rachel.

Computers covered a long table.

Seventeen files waited.

Camilla typed quickly.

“One hour twelve minutes.”

Sofia said, “We send everything now.”

Luciano shook his head.

“Not yet.”

Everyone turned.

Elena stared.

“What?”

“Crane needs to accept the full transfer.”

“He already did.”

“No.”

Luciano pointed toward the screen.

“One account is still pending.”

Camilla looked.

She swore.

“Switzerland.”

Rachel said, “How long?”

“No idea.”

Luciano looked at Anthony.

“Can Crane stop it?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“If he destroys the authorization server.”

“Where?”

Anthony hesitated.

“Here.”

Luciano stared.

“What?”

Anthony pointed toward the floor.

“This warehouse used to be the primary accounting archive.”

Camilla went pale.

“The server is downstairs.”

A sound came from outside.

Engines.

Many of them.

Marco checked the security camera.

Six black SUVs.

Crane stepped out of the first.

Daniel Vescari stepped out of the second.

Elena whispered, “They found us.”

Luciano looked at the countdown.

Forty-eight minutes.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

Emergency red lights flickered on.

A voice came through the old intercom.

Daniel.

“Luciano.”

Everyone froze.

“We don't need to burn the whole city down.”

Luciano walked toward the microphone.

“No.”

Daniel's voice filled the warehouse.

“Just each other.”

Then an explosion shook the lower floor.

Camilla looked at the server monitor.

The pending Swiss account disappeared.

Elena stared at the screen.

“They stopped it.”

Anthony shook his head.

“No.”

A new message appeared.

PILLAR 17: MANUAL AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.

Luciano looked at Anthony.

“How?”

Anthony's face turned pale.

“Isabella created a final safeguard.”

“What safeguard?”

Anthony pointed to the biometric prompt.

AUTHORIZED SIGNATORY REQUIRED.

Below it was one name.

ISABELLA CALVANO.

Sofia whispered, “She's dead.”

Then Camilla stared at the screen.

“No.”

She opened an encrypted folder.

Inside was a final file.

A medical authorization.

A preserved biometric key.

Isabella had left one last signature.

The upload began.

Outside, Crane's men entered the warehouse.

The progress bar moved.

12%.

19%.

27%.

Gunfire erupted downstairs.

38%.

Marco slammed the security door.

52%.

Daniel's voice shouted from the stairwell.

“Luciano!”

65%.

Crane began firing through the lock.

78%.

Camilla whispered, “Come on.”

91%.

The door burst inward.

Daniel stepped through.

Crane behind him.

Both armed.

The screen reached 99%.

May you like

Then everything stopped.

Connection lost.
