Chapter 5 - The House That Never Changed

Roman entered the old house carrying the ledger.

Gabriel walked beside him.

Mara was not supposed to be there.

Neither was Curtis.

Roman had ordered both of them to remain three blocks away.

Mara ignored him.

Daniel Whitfield had died because he tried to stop Anthony Vale.

She would not spend the rest of her life wondering whether she had stopped one street too soon.

The house was enormous but lifeless.

Roman had preserved it exactly as Elena left it.

Photographs still lined the hallway.

Gabriel at five.

Gabriel at seven.

Gabriel missing two front teeth.

Gabriel holding a baseball trophy.

The grown man stopped before one photograph.

“That was my ninth birthday.”

Roman looked at him.

“You remember?”

“Pieces.”

Roman almost reached toward him.

He stopped.

Gabriel noticed.

Then quietly said, “I remember you carried me upstairs that night.”

Roman looked away.

“Yes.”

“You thought I was asleep.”

“You were.”

“No.”

Roman's eyes returned to him.

Gabriel gave the smallest smile.

It vanished when Anthony’s voice came from the sitting room.

“Touching.”

They entered.

Elena sat in a chair.

Alive.

Older.

Silver mixed with the dark hair Roman remembered.

Her face had changed.

Her eyes had not.

Roman stopped.

“Elena.”

She looked at him.

Eighteen years vanished and remained at the same time.

“Roman.”

Gabriel stood between them.

For several seconds nobody remembered Anthony.

Then Mercer raised a gun.

“Ledger.”

Roman placed it on the table.

Anthony smiled.

“You always were sentimental.”

Roman stared at Elena.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Anthony stepped forward.

“You're remarkably calm.”

“I've imagined killing the person who took my family for eighteen years.”

Anthony’s smile faded.

“And yet you never imagined me.”

“No.”

“That was the point.”

Mara watched through a side window from the garden.

Curtis whispered into her ear.

“We need another entrance.”

“You said there’s a cellar.”

“Locked.”

Mara remembered Daniel's files.

A renovation blueprint.

“There’s a coal door behind the east wall.”

Curtis stared.

“How do you know?”

“My father kept everything.”

They found it beneath overgrown ivy.

Inside, they moved through the basement.

Above them, Anthony spoke.

“You built an empire, Roman. But you were never disciplined enough to keep it.”

Roman's voice remained calm.

“So you stole from me.”

“I improved what you created.”

“You kidnapped a child.”

“I removed your weakness.”

Gabriel stiffened.

Elena said, “You were always afraid of him.”

Anthony looked at her.

“Roman?”

“No. Gabriel.”

Anthony’s expression changed.

Elena continued.

“You knew Roman might someday leave everything to his son. You wanted control before that happened.”

Roman understood.

“Succession.”

Anthony smiled again.

“The ledger finally taught you something.”

Roman's name in red.

Tomorrow’s date.

Final payment.

Succession.

Vale had intended Roman to die.

Then control of Roman's businesses would fracture.

Gabriel, legally dead, could not inherit.

Anthony would step into the vacuum.

Roman looked at Mercer.

“And police would call it what?”

Mercer said nothing.

Anthony answered.

“A tragedy.”

In the basement, Mara found the stairs.

Locked at the top.

Curtis worked quietly on the latch.

Mara heard Elena speaking.

“You never understood Roman.”

Anthony laughed.

“I understood him better than anyone.”

“No. You understood his anger.”

Roman looked at Elena.

She continued.

“You never understood what he loved.”

Anthony’s smile disappeared.

At that moment Curtis opened the basement door.

Mara stepped into the hallway.

Mercer saw her first.

“You.”

Anthony turned.

Mara held up her phone.

“Smile.”

Vale stared.

She continued.

“You've been broadcasting for six minutes.”

Anthony laughed.

“To whom?”

Mara's smile was steady.

“Everyone in Daniel Whitfield’s files.”

That was partly a bluff.

The stream was actually being sent to three journalists and a federal prosecutor Daniel had once contacted.

Enough.

Mercer panicked.

He moved toward her.

Curtis stepped out.

“Don't.”

Mercer froze.

Roman used the distraction.

He crossed the room, seized the ledger, and pulled Elena behind him.

Gabriel moved toward his mother.

Anthony backed away.

The control he had carried for decades began to crack.

“You think this changes anything?”

Roman said, “It already did.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Mercer looked toward the windows.

Anthony stared at Mara.

“What did you do?”

“What my father couldn't finish.”

Anthony moved toward a side door.

Curtis blocked him.

More sirens.

Federal vehicles entered the driveway.

Mercer dropped his weapon.

Anthony did not.

He grabbed Elena.

Gabriel shouted.

But Elena twisted free.

Roman stepped between them.

Anthony looked around.

No exit.

No allies.

No control.

For the first time, he looked old.

Federal agents entered.

“Hands where we can see them!”

Anthony slowly raised his hands.

Mara exhaled.

Then Anthony smiled.

Roman saw it.

“What?”

Anthony looked directly at Gabriel.

“You really think this is over?”

Gabriel stared.

Anthony continued.

“Ask your mother why she stayed hidden after I stopped looking.”

Roman turned toward Elena.

Her face went pale.

“Elena?”

Anthony laughed as agents took him away.

Elena sat down.

Gabriel looked at her.

“Mom?”

She could not meet his eyes.

Roman’s voice softened.

“What didn’t you tell us?”

Elena whispered, “Anthony wasn’t the only reason we disappeared.”

Mara felt the room change again.

Gabriel stepped closer.

“What does that mean?”

Elena looked at Roman.

“There was someone else.”

“Who?”

She opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, an agent entered carrying a sealed evidence bag recovered from Anthony’s car.

Inside was a photograph.

The man in the photograph had been standing beside Daniel Whitfield the night before Daniel died.

Mara recognized him instantly.

It was her father’s closest friend.

A man who had attended Daniel's funeral.

A man Mara had trusted her entire childhood.

And according to the handwritten note on the back, he was still alive.
