Chapter 11 - The Name Behind the Port

Dr. Miriam Hale had cared for Saoirse for eleven weeks.
Every appointment.
Every scan.
Every reassurance.
Federal agents detained her before sunrise.
She denied everything.
Then investigators found payments from Marcus.
Hale wasn't planning to harm the baby.
She had been instructed to falsify the delivery time and blood records.
Why?
Inheritance.
Again.
The Brennan trust contained an absurd old clause.
Any heir born before a specific legal transfer completed would inherit voting rights immediately.
Elena needed control long enough to move the assets offshore.
The scheme wasn't to kill Saoirse's baby.
It was to make the child legally invisible for forty-eight hours.
A fraudulent stillbirth record.
A second birth certificate later.
Saoirse became physically ill hearing it.
“They were going to tell me my baby died?”
Cesily nodded grimly.
“And then give my child back?”
“If everything went according to their plan.”
Saoirse laughed bitterly.
Nothing about these people surprised her anymore.
The conspiracy was collapsing.
Marcus remained missing.
Elena remained in custody, but her communication network continued.
That meant Marcus was operating independently.
Or someone else was.
Saoirse changed hospitals.
A new medical team was vetted by federal authorities and by Cesily.
Not Nikolai.
Saoirse insisted.
At thirty-five weeks, complications developed.
Her blood pressure climbed.
The doctors ordered bed rest.
Nikolai visited daily when invited.
Sometimes they talked.
Sometimes he sat across the room reading while she slept.
One evening, Saoirse woke and found him assembling a tiny mobile.
“You're terrible at that.”
He looked up.
“Apparently this child has inherited your judgment.”
“My judgment married you.”
“Point taken.”
She smiled.
Then became serious.
“Nikolai.”
“Yes?”
“If I let you back into my life, it won't be because you protected me.”
“I know.”
“It won't be because Tess wasn't your mistress.”
“I know.”
“You still lied.”
“Yes.”
“You still chose for me.”
“Yes.”
“And I may never trust you the same way.”
“I know.”
“Why aren't you arguing?”
“Because I spent eight years believing love meant preventing bad things from reaching you.”
He set the mobile down.
“I never understood that sometimes I was the bad thing reaching you.”
Saoirse looked at him for a long time.
That was the first apology that reached the wound.
Not I'm sorry.
Understanding.
Her phone rang.
Lucian.
Marcus had been found.
At Terminal Seven.
Alive.
And asking specifically for Saoirse.
“No,” Nikolai said.
Then closed his eyes.
“Sorry.”
Saoirse almost smiled.
“What does he want?”
Lucian answered over speakerphone.
“To surrender.”
“Then why me?”
“He says there's one document only you can authenticate.”
Saoirse considered it.
She wouldn't go physically.
They arranged secure video.
Marcus appeared on screen.
He looked tired.
“I killed Patrick Brennan.”
Saoirse felt nothing at first.
Then everything.
“Why?”
“Elena ordered it.”
“You obeyed?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought Patrick was going to start a war.”
“You murdered my father to prevent hypothetical violence?”
“Yes.”
Saoirse's voice remained cold.
“What document?”
Marcus held up an original incorporation agreement.
Terminal Seven.
The signatures included Viktor Drevik, Arthur Vale, Maeve Brennan, Patrick Brennan and Stefan Oric.
But there was a sixth.
Elena Drevik.
She wasn't merely continuing Viktor's scheme.
She had helped create it.
Marcus continued.
“Elena kept one secret from everyone.”
“What?”
“The trust doesn't transfer to your baby.”
Saoirse frowned.
“We know.”
“It transfers to you permanently at the child's live birth.”
Cesily checked.
He was right.
That was why Elena feared the delivery.
Once Saoirse gave birth, the assets could never return to Drevik control under the old agreement.
Her child wasn't the target.
She was.
The manipulated miscarriages had delayed the transfer.
The planned false stillbirth would delay it again.
Everything clicked.
Saoirse's pregnancy was a clock.
Marcus lowered his eyes.
“Elena has one final contingency.”
“What?”
Before he could answer, gunfire erupted off-screen.
Marcus ducked.
The feed shook.
Lucian shouted.
Then disappeared from view.
Saoirse gripped the bedrail.
“Nikolai.”
He was already calling security.
The video returned for one second.
Marcus lay bleeding.
He looked into the camera.
“Elena isn't in custody.”
Cesily froze.
“What?”
Marcus coughed.
“The woman arrested wasn't Elena.”
The connection failed.
Nikolai stared at Saoirse.
Then every light in the hospital suite went out.
A voice came through the darkness.
“Saoirse?”
May you like
She knew that voice.
Elena.
