Chapter 8 - The Woman on the Kitchen Camera

Police arrived before Damon entered.

He vanished down the stairwell.

But he left a message taped to Rachel's door.

COME HOME.

ALONE.

I didn't.

Instead, Margaret finally told me why she had entered my kitchen.

The hidden compartment had belonged to my grandmother.

She had installed it while helping me purchase the house.

Inside were original trust documents.

Damon didn't know the compartment existed.

But Margaret had feared he was close to discovering it.

“Why did the camera go black?”

“Richard entered.”

“So you weren't afraid of Owen.”

“No.”

“You said his name.”

“I said, ‘Owen's father.’ You heard only the last word before the audio cut.”

One mystery disappeared.

Ten more remained.

Margaret gave Rachel the original documents.

The forged trustee appointments became obvious.

Damon and Claire's signatures had been inserted digitally.

Claire gave a sworn statement admitting the affair and explaining Damon's coercion.

She did not minimize what she'd done.

Owen ended their engagement.

Quietly.

“I still love you,” he told her.

Claire cried.

“I know.”

“But love isn't the same as trust.”

“I know that too.”

Watching them hurt because it showed me the conversation Damon and I would never have.

There was no honest grief between us.

Only strategy.

Three days later, Damon finally called.

“Come home.”

“No.”

“I want to explain.”

“You've had years.”

“You think Margaret is innocent?”

“I think you're a liar.”

He laughed softly.

“Both can be true.”

That sentence stayed with me.

I asked Margaret about it.

She went silent.

“What did you do?”

She sat down.

“Your grandmother and I altered the trust.”

“Why?”

“To protect Claire.”

“Legally?”

“No.”

There it was.

The good people had secrets too.

Margaret and my grandmother had moved assets without authorization after Richard disappeared, fearing Thomas would seize them.

Their actions might have been motivated by protection.

They were still illegal.

“And Damon knows?”

“Yes.”

“So he can use it against you.”

“Yes.”

The case suddenly became harder.

Rachel warned us that Damon could frame the entire conflict as a family dispute over improperly transferred assets.

“We need direct evidence of his fraud.”

Richard had it.

Or claimed to.

The missing contents of his briefcase were banking records connecting Damon to shell companies.

But after the office break-in, Richard disappeared again.

Owen was furious.

“He ran.”

I wasn't sure.

Richard had left his coat.

His medication.

His wallet.

People planning to disappear usually took those things.

Then I remembered the security system.

0709 had been used the day Richard entered my kitchen.

Someone had created that code for him.

I checked administrator logs.

Created by: D.HALE.

Damon had given Richard access.

Why?

I searched older logs.

0709 had been used dozens of times.

Not recently.

Years earlier.

Before I owned the house.

That made no sense.

Unless the security system had been transferred from another property.

I called the installation company.

The technician confirmed it.

The control unit had originally been registered elsewhere.

An address downtown.

An abandoned office building.

Owen and I drove there with Rachel and two private investigators.

The building looked empty.

Inside, the seventh-floor office still carried an old brass plaque.

HALE MERCER CAPITAL.

We entered.

Dust covered everything.

Except one path across the floor.

Fresh footprints.

They led to a locked records room.

The investigator forced it open.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of files.

And one chair.

Richard was tied to it.

Alive.

His eyes opened.

“Don't touch the files,” he whispered.

“Why?”

He looked behind us.

A red light began blinking.

May you like

Then the elevator bell rang.

Someone had reached the seventh floor.
