THE TWELFTH HOUSEKEEPER / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Name Elena Never Wrote Down

Silas refused to speak again.

Rebecca Shaw separated him immediately from the other suspects.

Within hours, searches began across properties, offices, and bank accounts connected to his network.

Three security employees were arrested.

Dr. Nathan Mercer disappeared before agents reached his home.

That worried Claire.

Adrian and Leo were taken to a secure medical facility.

Leo had bruises but no serious injuries.

Adrian required nine stitches.

He complained about every one.

“You’re worse than Leo,” Claire told him.

Leo, sitting on the hospital bed eating pudding, nodded.

“Way worse.”

Adrian stared at them.

“I was shot.”

“Grazed,” Claire corrected.

“A bullet interacted with my body.”

Leo snorted.

For one moment, they sounded like a normal family.

Then Rebecca entered.

The room changed.

“We have a problem.”

Adrian stood.

“Mercer?”

“Gone.”

“Find him.”

“We are trying.”

“What else?”

Rebecca closed the door.

“Silas wasn’t bluffing.”

Claire felt tension crawl up her spine.

“What did you find?”

“Messages between Silas and an unidentified person.”

“Ordering Elena’s death?” Adrian asked.

Rebecca nodded.

“Silas arranged the vehicle attack. But the instruction came from someone else.”

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

Adrian’s expression hardened.

“Then find out.”

“We found a code name.”

Rebecca placed a printed page on the table.

KINGMAKER.

Adrian stared.

Mateo, who had entered behind Rebecca, went pale.

Claire noticed.

“You know that name.”

Mateo did not answer.

Adrian turned.

“Mateo.”

The older man closed his eyes.

“I hoped I was wrong.”

“Who is Kingmaker?”

Mateo sat down.

“Your father.”

Adrian laughed once.

No humor.

“My father has been dead fifteen years.”

“Your biological father is dead.”

Silence.

Claire looked from one man to the other.

Adrian spoke slowly.

“What are you saying?”

“The man who raised you wasn’t your biological father.”

Adrian’s face emptied.

Mateo continued.

“Your mother was pregnant when she married Carlo Vale. Only four people knew.”

“Who?”

“Your mother. Carlo. Me.”

“And?”

Mateo looked at Leo.

Then back at Adrian.

“Victor Kane.”

Adrian stopped.

“Kane.”

“Silas’s father.”

Claire understood first.

“Oh, God.”

Mateo nodded.

“Victor was your biological father.”

Adrian looked as though the floor had shifted.

“Silas?”

“Your half brother.”

Nobody spoke.

Leo looked confused.

“So Uncle Silas is actually Uncle Silas?”

In another moment, someone might have laughed.

Not now.

Mateo explained.

Victor Kane had been a strategist in the old Vale organization.

Carlo Vale married Adrian’s mother after Victor was sentenced to prison.

Carlo raised Adrian as his son.

Victor died behind bars.

Silas grew up knowing the truth.

Adrian did not.

“He thought half the empire belonged to him,” Mateo said.

“He wanted revenge,” Claire said.

“More than that,” Rebecca replied. “He wanted recognition.”

Adrian walked to the window.

“My father knew?”

“Carlo knew,” Mateo said. “And he chose you anyway.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because your mother begged us not to.”

“Everyone keeps protecting me with lies.”

Nobody could argue.

Rebecca tapped the document.

“The Kingmaker code predates Silas’s adult involvement. It may refer to Victor’s old network rather than Victor himself.”

“So Silas inherited it.”

“Possibly.”

Claire looked at the messages.

“What exactly did Kingmaker say about Elena?”

Rebecca read.

“She found the bloodline file. Remove her before she tells Adrian.”

Adrian turned.

“Bloodline file?”

Mateo cursed under his breath.

Claire asked, “What is that?”

“Records Carlo kept,” Mateo said. “Birth certificates. Trust documents. Letters.”

“Where?”

“I thought they were destroyed.”

Adrian looked at him.

“You’ve been wrong before.”

Mateo accepted that.

Elena had discovered Adrian’s parentage.

But why would that get her killed?

Inheritance?

Control?

Perhaps Silas feared Adrian learning the truth.

Then Claire remembered the secret-room photographs.

Several showed Elena with Silas.

One had looked strange.

She opened the photograph on her laptop.

Elena and Silas stood outside a courthouse.

Behind them was an older woman.

Claire zoomed in.

Mateo leaned over.

His face changed.

“She’s alive.”

“Who?”

“Adrian’s mother.”

Adrian spun around.

“My mother died when I was sixteen.”

“No.”

Mateo’s voice barely worked.

“I attended the funeral.”

“So did I.”

“Then who is that?”

Mateo sat heavily.

“Evelyn Vale.”

Rebecca immediately ran facial comparisons.

The result took an hour.

High probability.

Adrian did not speak during that hour.

Leo fell asleep against Claire.

When Rebecca returned, she looked grim.

“The woman in the photograph is almost certainly Evelyn Vale.”

Adrian whispered, “When was it taken?”

“Four months before Elena died.”

“Where?”

“A courthouse in Connecticut.”

Daniel Ross was called.

He remembered the photograph.

“Elena met Evelyn twice.”

“You knew my mother was alive?” Adrian demanded.

“I knew Elena met a woman claiming to be your mother. We never proved it.”

“And you didn’t think that mattered?”

“Elena believed telling you too soon would put you in danger.”

Adrian nearly threw the phone.

Claire took it from him.

“Daniel, where did Elena meet Evelyn the second time?”

“A private nursing facility.”

Rebecca looked up.

“Name?”

“Rosewood.”

The facility had closed two years earlier.

But ownership records remained.

Its controlling company belonged to a trust.

The trust beneficiary was Dr. Nathan Mercer.

They found the building just before midnight.

Abandoned.

Or apparently abandoned.

Federal agents entered first.

Claire stayed with Leo in the vehicle.

Adrian insisted on going inside.

Twenty minutes passed.

Then thirty.

Claire hated waiting.

Leo woke.

“Where’s Dad?”

“Inside.”

“Is he coming back?”

“Yes.”

“You don’t know that.”

Claire looked at him.

“No. I don’t.”

He appreciated the honesty.

Five minutes later Rebecca called.

“We found someone.”

“Mercer?”

“No.”

Claire looked at Leo.

“Who?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“You need to bring Adrian’s son inside.”

“Why?”

“The woman is asking for him.”

Claire’s heart began pounding.

“Which woman?”

Rebecca’s voice lowered.

“Evelyn Vale.”

They entered through a side door.

The former facility smelled of bleach and dust.

Agents lined the hall.

At the end was a private room.

Adrian stood inside.

Motionless.

An elderly woman sat on the bed.

She was thin.

White-haired.

But alive.

Leo held Claire’s hand.

Adrian turned.

His eyes were red.

“This is your grandmother.”

Evelyn looked at Leo and began to cry.

“My beautiful boy.”

Leo stayed beside Claire.

“Why did everyone say you were dead?”

Evelyn looked at Adrian.

“Because I tried to tell your father who he really was.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Silas?”

“No.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Silas was only a child when they made me disappear.”

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Who did?”

Evelyn’s eyes moved toward the doorway.

Fear entered her face.

“The man who raised Silas after Victor died.”

Mateo whispered a name.

“No.”

A shadow crossed the hall.

May you like

Then a familiar doctor’s voice said from outside the room,

“I was wondering how long it would take you to find her.”
