Chapter 5 - The Doctor With the Missing Evidence

Claire did not remember the drive home.

She remembered leaving the café.

She remembered walking past strangers on the sidewalk.

She remembered sitting inside her car with both hands gripping the steering wheel.

But everything after that felt distant.

Like she was watching someone else’s life.

Because the truth she had spent a year searching for had finally arrived.

And somehow, it hurt more than the lie.

Ethan had known.

That was the part she could not stop thinking about.

Not the divorce.

Not Madison.

Not even the stolen future she believed she had lost.

It was the fact that every time Ethan looked into her eyes and told her she was the problem, he knew.

He knew she was not broken.

He knew she was not the reason they failed.

And he still let her believe it.

Claire arrived at her apartment after sunset.

She placed her keys on the table and stood in the silence.

A year ago, this apartment represented everything she had lost.

Now it represented something else.

Freedom.

It was the first place where nobody could rewrite her story.

Nobody could tell her who she was.

Nobody could convince her she was less valuable because someone else chose to leave.

Her phone rang.

Adrian.

Claire answered.

“Did you find something?”

There was a pause.

“Yes.”

She sat down.

“What is it?”

“I found the person who approved the final changes to your records.”

Claire’s heart tightened.

“Who?”

Adrian’s voice became more serious.

“Before I tell you, I need you to understand something.”

“What?”

“This was not a simple mistake.”

Claire closed her eyes.

She already knew.

“Someone planned this.”

“Yes.”

The room became silent.

“Who?”

Adrian took a breath.

“The authorization came from an external account connected to a private medical consulting company.”

Claire frowned.

“A consulting company?”

“Yes. A company hired by several wealthy clients to review medical cases.”

She felt a cold sensation move through her.

“Ethan?”

“Not directly.”

Claire looked confused.

“Then who?”

Adrian hesitated.

“Someone connected to him.”

The answer made her sit straighter.

“Who?”

“I’m sending you the information now.”

A few seconds later, her phone received a message.

Claire opened the file.

A company name appeared.

Vale Medical Consulting Services.

She froze.

Not because she recognized the company.

Because of the name.

Vale.

She looked up.

“Adrian.”

“I know what you’re thinking.”

“No.”

Her voice lowered.

“Your name is on this.”

Another pause.

“I know.”

Claire felt confusion replace anger.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian was quiet for several seconds.

Then he explained.

“My father founded that company years ago.”

Claire stared at the screen.

“Your father?”

“Yes.”

She stood up.

“So your family’s company changed my records?”

“No.”

His answer came immediately.

Firmly.

“The company name was used, but I was not involved. My father sold his medical consulting division five years ago.”

Claire listened carefully.

“Then someone used an old connection.”

“Exactly.”

She walked toward the window.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

Someone had gone through all this effort.

Someone had hidden the truth.

Someone had created a false medical history just to make her believe she was the reason her marriage ended.

But why?

Leaving a marriage was one thing.

Destroying someone’s identity was another.

“Adrian.”

“Yes?”

“Why would anyone do this?”

His answer was quiet.

“Because they needed you to disappear.”

The words stayed with her.

Disappear.

That was exactly what happened.

After the divorce, Claire lost almost everything.

Friends stopped calling.

People looked at her differently.

The charity foundation she built slowly moved away from her leadership.

Everyone believed the story Ethan told.

That she was unstable.

That she was bitter.

That she was the woman who failed.

Someone had not just wanted Ethan to leave her.

Someone wanted to erase her.

The next morning, Claire returned to St. Catherine’s Hospital.

Adrian had arranged a private meeting with the hospital’s internal investigation team.

The room was filled with documents.

Security records.

Access logs.

Emails.

Everything connected to her medical history.

Claire sat across from Adrian as he explained the timeline.

“Your final fertility evaluation was completed on March 14th.”

He pointed to a document.

“The results were normal.”

Claire looked at the paper.

March 14th.

She remembered that day.

She remembered Ethan sitting beside her.

She remembered leaving the hospital crying because he told her the doctor had confirmed their worst fear.

But now she knew.

The doctor never said that.

Someone else created that story.

“The next day,” Adrian continued, “someone accessed your file.”

“Who?”

“A medical coordinator.”

Claire already knew.

“Madison.”

Adrian nodded.

“But she didn’t have permission to modify the final report.”

Claire looked confused.

“Then how did she do it?”

“She didn’t.”

The answer surprised her.

Adrian opened another file.

“Someone with higher authorization changed the information afterward.”

Claire looked at the name.

Her stomach dropped.

Ethan Carter.

The evidence was not complete.

It was only an access record.

But it was enough.

Ethan had accessed the system.

He had been there.

He had known.

Claire leaned back slowly.

The man she married.

The man she trusted.

The man who watched her blame herself.

He was involved from the beginning.

Adrian watched her carefully.

“Claire.”

She looked up.

“I’m okay.”

It was the first time she had said those words and actually meant them.

Because the truth hurt.

But confusion hurt more.

Now she knew what she was fighting.

A lie.

Not a failure.

Not a weakness.

A lie.

That afternoon, Ethan called.

Claire almost ignored it.

Almost.

But she answered.

“What do you want?”

His voice sounded nervous.

“We need to talk.”

“No.”

“Claire, please.”

She almost laughed.

Please.

The word sounded strange coming from him.

“You had a year to talk.”

“I made mistakes.”

“You keep calling them mistakes.”

Silence.

“Because you don’t want to call them choices.”

Ethan said nothing.

Claire continued.

“You chose to leave.”

“Claire—”

“You chose to believe Madison.”

“Claire, listen.”

“No. You listen.”

Her voice remained calm.

And that seemed to scare him more than anger.

“I spent a year thinking I wasn’t enough.”

Ethan whispered.

“I never wanted that.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Then why did you create it?”

Silence.

Real silence.

The kind that came when someone had no answer.

Finally, Ethan spoke.

“Things got complicated.”

Claire shook her head.

“Complicated?”

She looked out the window.

“You destroyed my life because it was convenient.”

“That’s not fair.”

The moment he said it, Claire almost smiled.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was predictable.

Even now.

Even after everything.

He was still trying to defend himself.

“You know what’s unfair?”

Her voice became quieter.

“Spending nights crying because I thought my body failed me.”

Silence.

“While you already knew the truth.”

Ethan breathed heavily.

“Claire…”

“No.”

She ended the call.

This time, she did not cry.

She did not shake.

She did not feel broken.

Because the woman who once needed Ethan to choose her had disappeared.

And in her place was someone stronger.

Someone who finally chose herself.

That evening, Adrian called again.

His voice was serious.

“We found the last piece.”

Claire stood still.

“What piece?”

“The reason they changed the records.”

Her heartbeat increased.

“Tell me.”

A pause.

Then Adrian said:

“It wasn’t only about the divorce.”

Claire waited.

“Ethan and Madison were hiding something much bigger.”

The room became silent.

“What?”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Your medical records were changed because the original results could prove something they desperately needed to hide.”

Claire gripped her phone.

“What did they need to hide?”

Adrian answered slowly.

“The baby Madison is holding…”

A cold feeling moved through her.

“Was never supposed to exist according to the story they created.”

Claire said nothing.

Because suddenly, everything connected.

The lies.

The records.

The timing.

The betrayal.

Adrian continued.

“And Claire…”

“Yes?”

“We need to talk in person.”

“Why?”

His voice became heavy.

“Because I found the original report.”

Claire looked toward the dark window.

The truth she had been chasing for a year was finally within reach.

But she was beginning to understand something.

The truth was never just about what happened to her.

May you like

It was about what Ethan and Madison were willing to destroy to protect themselves.

And now, Claire was about to discover the secret they had been hiding all along.
