Chapter 2 - The Man Behind the Kitchen Door

Dominic reached the staircase before anyone else.
“Ethan!”
Mia had never seen a man move so quickly without appearing panicked.
Marco ran behind him.
Two guards remained downstairs.
One stepped in front of Mia.
“Stay here.”
“My daughter—”
“Stay here.”
Another scream came from upstairs.
This one was shorter.
Then silence.
Mia’s blood turned cold.
Lily began crying.
“Ethan!”
She tried to climb out of Mia’s arms.
Mia held her firmly.
“No, sweetheart.”
Dominic disappeared down the upstairs hallway.
Marco followed.
A door slammed.
Someone shouted.
Then came the unmistakable sound of a struggle.
Mia’s instinct screamed at her to leave.
Every mothering instinct she possessed told her to get Lily away from the mansion, away from Dominic Moretti, away from men with concealed weapons and locked doors.
But the front entrance remained guarded.
And someone had sent a message saying Lily had seen too much.
There was nowhere that felt safe.
Thirty seconds later, Dominic appeared at the upstairs railing.
“Ethan’s fine.”
Mia nearly collapsed from relief.
Dominic’s face, however, was murderous.
“We found someone in his room.”
The guests erupted.
“Who?”
“What happened?”
“Is Ethan hurt?”
Dominic ignored them.
He looked directly at Mia.
“Bring Lily upstairs.”
Mia hesitated.
“Why?”
“I need her to see something.”
“No.”
Dominic’s eyes narrowed.
“She’s three.”
“I know exactly how old she is.”
“Then stop treating her like a witness in a police lineup.”
For the first time, something like reluctant respect crossed his face.
He descended halfway down the stairs.
“You’re right.”
Mia had not expected that.
Dominic continued.
“I won’t make her identify anyone.”
“Then why?”
“Because we found something.”
Mia looked at Lily.
The child had stopped crying.
“What?”
“A necklace.”
Lily lifted her head.
Dominic touched his own neck.
“A lion.”
Lily became rigid.
“That’s his.”
Mia felt a chill.
Dominic saw the reaction.
“That’s all I needed.”
He turned to Marco.
“Keep them downstairs.”
“Dominic.”
Mia did not know why she used his first name.
Perhaps because calling him Mr. Moretti made him feel like someone far removed from ordinary humanity.
And right now, despite everything people said about him, he was still a father whose son had nearly eaten a cake someone had tampered with.
He stopped.
“If you found the man,” Mia said, “then call the police.”
A strange silence followed.
One guest actually looked away.
Mia understood.
Of course.
This was Dominic Moretti.
Police involvement was not simple here.
Dominic studied her.
Then he surprised everyone.
“Marco.”
“Yes?”
“Call Detective Alvarez.”
Marco blinked.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
Mia stared.
Dominic’s gaze remained on hers.
“No one touches the man upstairs. No one questions him. Alvarez gets him exactly as we found him.”
That single decision changed Mia’s impression of Dominic more than any threat could have.
He was furious.
He was powerful.
And yet he was choosing evidence over revenge.
At least for now.
“Thank you,” she said.
Dominic gave a humorless smile.
“Don’t thank me yet.”
Detective Sofia Alvarez arrived twenty minutes later.
She entered through the front doors with two uniformed officers and the expression of someone who had been inside Moretti homes before and hated every memory associated with them.
She was in her forties, compact and sharp-eyed.
“Dominic.”
“Sofia.”
“You lock twenty-seven people inside your house, I get six calls before your guy reaches me.”
“Twenty-three.”
“That’s comforting.”
Her gaze moved to the destroyed cake.
Then to Mia and Lily.
“Who’s the child?”
“The reason my son is still alive.”
The room went silent again.
Alvarez’s expression changed.
“What happened?”
Dominic told her.
Not everything.
Mia could sense that.
But he told enough.
Alvarez knelt beside Lily.
Unlike Dominic, she stayed several feet away.
“Hi, Lily.”
Lily pressed her face into Mia’s shoulder.
“That’s okay. You don’t have to talk to me.”
Mia appreciated her immediately.
Alvarez looked at Mia.
“Can you tell me exactly what your daughter said?”
Mia repeated it.
“A man touched Ethan’s cake.”
“Did she mention what she saw him use?”
“A little bottle.”
Alvarez looked toward the cake.
“Lab’s coming.”
Dominic interrupted.
“And the man upstairs?”
“Who is he?”
“You tell me.”
That answer made Alvarez look annoyed.
“You don’t recognize him?”
“No.”
“Your security team let an unidentified man wander from the kitchen to your son’s bedroom?”
Dominic’s jaw flexed.
“My security team is being examined.”
“By you?”
“By both of us.”
Alvarez sighed.
“Show me.”
She followed Marco upstairs.
Dominic remained.
Mia expected him to follow.
Instead he walked to the ruined cake and stared down at it.
Ethan came down the stairs holding another guard’s hand.
He saw Lily.
She saw him.
For several seconds, neither child spoke.
Then Lily slid from Mia’s arms.
Mia almost stopped her.
But Lily took only three steps.
“I’m sorry about your cake.”
Ethan frowned.
“You saved me?”
Lily looked confused.
“I broke it.”
“My dad said you saved me.”
Lily glanced at Dominic.
He nodded once.
Ethan walked closer.
“Were you scared?”
“Yes.”
“Me too.”
That simple exchange caused something inside Mia to ache.
Adults filled the room with secrets, suspicion, power, and fear.
Two children reduced everything to the truth.
They had both been scared.
Ethan looked at the cake.
“There’s still one piece on the table.”
Mia immediately said, “No.”
Dominic almost smiled.
“We’re not eating anything from that kitchen tonight.”
Ethan sighed.
“Can we have pizza?”
A few nervous laughs escaped the guests.
Dominic looked at Mia.
“You hungry?”
“I’m mostly interested in leaving.”
“After Alvarez speaks to you.”
“You said that before.”
“And I meant it.”
Mia crossed her arms.
“And afterward?”
“I’ll have someone take you home.”
“No guards.”
Dominic raised an eyebrow.
“No offense.”
“I’m offended.”
For the first time, Mia saw the edge of a real smile.
It vanished quickly.
“Two guards.”
“Dominic.”
“Someone knows where you work. They may know where you live.”
Her irritation disappeared.
He was right.
She hated that he was right.
Alvarez returned forty minutes later.
Her expression was grim.
“The man upstairs is alive. Mild head injury. He claims he doesn’t know how he got here.”
Dominic laughed once.
Without humor.
“Convenient.”
“He has no identification.”
“The necklace?”
“Cheap metal. Lion emblem.”
Lily heard the word.
“That’s him.”
Alvarez looked at her.
Mia immediately shook her head.
“No more questions tonight.”
“Agreed.”
Alvarez stood.
“But I need to tell you something privately.”
She looked at Dominic.
“You too.”
Mia’s stomach tightened.
“What?”
Alvarez glanced at Lily.
“Not in front of the kids.”
Dominic motioned toward a side sitting room.
Mia asked a server she trusted, Rosa, to stay with Lily and Ethan.
Then she entered the room with Dominic and Alvarez.
The detective closed the door.
“The substance on the cake hasn’t been identified yet.”
Mia gripped the back of a chair.
“But?”
“But we found residue on the bottle cap.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“How dangerous?”
“I’m not speculating until the lab confirms.”
“Then what are you telling us?”
Alvarez pulled a photograph from an evidence envelope.
“The man upstairs had this in his pocket.”
She placed it on the table.
Mia stopped breathing.
It was a photograph of her.
Not tonight.
Not from the party.
It showed Mia walking Lily toward preschool three days earlier.
Dominic looked at her.
“You knew him?”
“No.”
“Think.”
“I’ve never seen him.”
Alvarez flipped the photograph over.
There was handwriting on the back.
Mia read it.
Her knees weakened.
ONLY THE CHILD.
Dominic’s voice became dangerously quiet.
“What does that mean?”
“I don’t know.”
Alvarez studied Mia.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.”
“Ex-husband?”
“None.”
“Lily’s father?”
Mia stiffened.
Dominic noticed.
Alvarez noticed too.
“Where is he?”
“Gone.”
“Dead?”
“No.”
“Name?”
Mia looked toward the closed door.
She had spent three years avoiding this conversation.
Three years telling herself that Lily was safer if nobody knew.
She had changed neighborhoods twice.
Changed jobs.
Stopped using social media.
Never posted Lily’s photograph online.
Because Lily’s father had not simply disappeared.
He had warned Mia to disappear first.
Dominic stepped closer.
“Mia.”
She looked at him.
“Who is Lily’s father?”
Before she could answer, someone knocked.
Once.
Twice.
Then the door opened.
Marco stood there, pale.
Dominic frowned.
“What?”
Marco held up a tablet.
“We checked the security footage.”
“And?”
“The man who touched the cake didn’t enter through the front gate.”
Alvarez stepped forward.
“How did he get in?”
Marco looked at Dominic.
“Someone let him through the private service entrance.”
“Who?”
Marco turned the tablet around.
The video was grainy but clear enough.
A black sedan arrived.
The service gate opened from inside.
The man with the lion necklace stepped out.
Then another figure appeared.
A Moretti employee.
Someone Dominic had trusted for seventeen years.
Dominic stared at the screen.
Mia watched the blood drain from his face.
Marco whispered the name.
“Luca.”
From the ballroom, Lily suddenly screamed.
Mia ran for the door.
May you like
When she reached it, the handle turned before she touched it.
Someone on the other side was already opening it.
