Chapter 14 - The Truth Behind the Locked Door

Julián opened the door slowly.
Sebastián stood near the window.
The boys were hiding behind the bed.
He held no weapon.
That made him more dangerous.
“You wanted the truth,” Sebastián said.
Julián stepped inside.
“Let them go.”
“They're not the problem.”
“Then what is?”
Sebastián looked at me.
“You.”
I froze.
“You ruined everything.”
“I didn't do anything.”
“You survived.”
His voice cracked.
“Adriana chose you.”
I shook my head.
“She chose her children.”
“No.”
He laughed bitterly.
“She chose you because she knew you would expose us.”
Julián moved closer.
“You killed her?”
Sebastián looked away.
“I didn't mean for her to die.”
“You caused the accident.”
“She was going to expose me.”
“So you killed her.”
“I panicked.”
Tomás shouted:
“You're a bad man!”
Sebastián turned.
The boy didn't move.
“You don't know anything.”
Tomás pointed toward him.
“Mommy knew.”
Sebastián froze.
“How?”
“Because she told us.”
Julián looked at his son.
“When?”
“Before she died.”
The room became silent.
Tomás continued.
“She said Daddy would forget because he was sad.”
Julián's eyes filled with tears.
“What else did she say?”
Tomás looked at me.
“She said Mari would come.”
I covered my mouth.
Sebastián's face collapsed.
“She planned this.”
Julián nodded.
“She did.”
Police surrounded the mansion.
Sebastián heard the sirens.
He looked at the boys.
Then at me.
Then at Julián.
“You think this ends with me?”
Julián said:
“Yes.”
Sebastián smiled.
“You don't know who else is involved.”
The police entered.
He surrendered.
But before they took him away, he whispered to me:
“Your mother lied about one thing.”
I stared.
“What?”
He smiled.
“She didn't give you away to save you.”
He paused.
“She gave you away because she was afraid of what you would become.”
Then he was taken away.
I stood frozen.
Julián came beside me.
“Don't listen to him.”
“What if he's telling the truth?”
“He isn't.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I found the last letter.”
He handed me an envelope.
Adriana's handwriting.
I opened it.
“My daughter,
If you are reading this, then the danger has passed.
I never gave you away because I feared you.
I gave you away because I loved you enough to let you have a life outside this family's darkness.
I watched you from far away.
I watched you become kind.
And I knew I had made the right choice.
Protect your brothers.
Not because they are wealthy.
Because they are yours.
And remember one thing.
Family is not always the person who shares your blood.
It is the person who stays.”
I cried.
Julián looked at the boys.
Then at me.
“We have a lot to repair.”
I nodded.
“Yes.”
Behind us, Tomás whispered:
“Mari?”
I turned.
He smiled through tears.
“Are you staying?”
I looked at the three boys.
Then at Julián.
“Yes.”
May you like
But this time, I wasn't staying as an employee.
I was staying as family.
