Chapter 4 - The Secret Elena Buried

Elena sat down slowly.

For the first time since entering the diner, she no longer looked powerful.

She looked old.

Dante remained standing with the sealed evidence sleeve in his hand.

Clara held Noah beside her.

“Say it,” Dante said.

Elena stared at the floor.

“Gabriel’s crash was ruled accidental.”

“I know.”

“It wasn’t.”

The room went silent.

Clara instinctively tightened her grip around Noah.

Dante’s voice changed.

“What?”

Elena looked at her son.

“The brakes were tampered with.”

Dante stared.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“Since three weeks after the funeral.”

Dante turned away.

Clara had seen anger before.

Ryan shouted when angry.

He punched walls.

He broke cups.

Dante did none of those things.

He became quieter.

That was worse.

“You let me bury my brother believing it was an accident.”

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From what?”

“Our own family.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

Elena continued.

“Your father was dying. The organization was splitting. Men who had spent thirty years waiting for power were choosing sides.”

Dante’s jaw clenched.

“Gabriel didn’t want any part of it.”

“No.”

“He wanted out.”

“Yes.”

Clara suddenly remembered Gabriel’s strange disappearances.

His anxiety.

The way he always sat facing doors.

He had told her his family was complicated.

He had not been exaggerating.

Elena looked toward Clara.

“When Gabriel met you, he started talking about leaving New York permanently.”

Clara felt tears rise again.

“He never told me.”

“He planned to.”

“How do you know?”

“Because he told me.”

Clara sat.

The answer landed like weight.

“What did he say?”

Elena’s voice softened.

“He said he met someone who made ordinary life feel possible.”

Clara closed her eyes.

Noah touched her cheek.

“Mommy sad?”

“A little.”

He kissed her cheek.

She smiled through tears.

Dante opened the evidence sleeve.

Inside was a photocopy of a payment ledger.

Dates.

Initials.

Numbers.

One entry was circled.

R.C. — $12,000 — VEHICLE ACCESS.

Clara stopped breathing.

Ryan.

Dante looked at Elena.

“Was Ryan paid to sabotage the car?”

“We never proved it.”

Clara stared at the page.

“That’s why he knew Gabriel.”

Elena nodded.

“He worked at the private garage Gabriel used.”

Clara covered her mouth.

Ryan had told her he worked construction when they met.

Dante’s eyes were ice.

“And you never found him?”

“We did.”

“Then why wasn’t he arrested?”

“He claimed he only provided access codes.”

“To whom?”

“He refused to say.”

Clara’s mind raced.

Ryan had entered her life months after Gabriel died.

He had approached her at a grocery store.

He noticed she was pregnant.

He offered to carry a bag.

He remembered seeing her later at a coffee shop.

Or claimed to.

Maybe none of it had been accidental.

She looked at Elena.

“Did Ryan know about me?”

“We didn’t think so.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Elena hesitated.

“We found photographs in Gabriel’s apartment.”

Clara’s face went cold.

“Of me?”

“Yes.”

“And you knew my name?”

“No. Gabriel labeled them only C.”

Clara laughed bitterly.

“But Ryan worked at his garage.”

“Yes.”

“He could have seen me.”

“Yes.”

Dante looked toward Clara.

“What are you thinking?”

She stood.

“Ryan didn’t just happen to meet me.”

Nobody spoke.

Clara continued.

“He found me.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Elena whispered, “Maybe to find out whether Gabriel told you anything.”

Clara shook her head.

“He didn’t.”

“Ryan wouldn’t know that.”

Clara felt suddenly ill.

Four years with Ryan.

Four years of believing he had rescued her.

What if he had been watching her?

What if every kindness had started as surveillance?

Dante reached for his phone.

“I want Ryan brought here.”

Clara stopped him.

“No.”

“He may know who killed Gabriel.”

“He also lived with my son.”

Dante froze.

Clara’s voice broke.

“He gave Noah baths. He made his lunches. He picked him up from daycare.”

She looked toward the child.

“If Ryan entered my life because of Gabriel, then what was Noah to him?”

Dante immediately understood.

“A risk.”

Clara went pale.

Elena stood.

“He never hurt Noah?”

“No.”

“Threatened him?”

“Never directly.”

“Directly?”

Clara swallowed.

“When Ryan got angry, he sometimes said I should be grateful he was raising another man’s kid.”

Dante closed his eyes briefly.

Clara continued.

“He knew.”

“Yes,” Dante said.

“He always knew exactly who Noah’s father was.”

“Yes.”

A knock sounded.

Marco entered.

“We have Ryan.”

Clara’s breath caught.

Dante looked at her.

“Do you want to see him?”

Every instinct told Clara no.

Every unanswered question told her yes.

“Yes.”

Ryan was brought into the living room.

No restraints.

No bruises.

Just fear.

Clara was grateful for that.

Dante’s men remained near the walls.

Elena took Noah into another room.

Clara stood across from Ryan.

“You knew Gabriel.”

Ryan said nothing.

“You knew him before you met me.”

His eyes lowered.

Clara stepped closer.

“Did you find me on purpose?”

Ryan swallowed.

“Yes.”

The word nearly knocked her backward.

“Why?”

“Because I was scared.”

“Of me?”

“Of what you knew.”

“I knew nothing.”

“I didn’t know that.”

Dante remained silent behind her.

Clara continued.

“Were you involved in Gabriel’s crash?”

Ryan shook his head violently.

“No.”

“You took twelve thousand dollars.”

“To give someone access.”

“To his car.”

“I didn’t know what they were going to do.”

“Who?”

Ryan looked toward Dante.

Dante said, “Answer.”

Ryan hesitated.

“I can’t.”

Clara slapped the table with her palm.

“Stop saying that!”

Everyone froze.

She pointed toward the room where Noah sat with Elena.

“You spent three years letting that boy call you Dad.”

Ryan’s eyes filled.

“I loved him.”

“You lied to him.”

“I loved both of you.”

“You found me because you were afraid.”

“I stayed because I loved you.”

Clara stared.

Perhaps that was the cruelest truth.

Both things could be true.

Ryan could have entered her life for terrible reasons and later loved them.

Love did not erase what he had done.

It made it uglier.

“Who paid you?”

Ryan shook his head.

Clara turned away.

“I’m done.”

“Clara.”

She stopped.

Ryan whispered, “If I tell you, they’ll kill everyone involved.”

Dante’s voice became dangerously calm.

“Who is they?”

Ryan looked at him.

“You think your father’s organization ended when he died?”

Dante said nothing.

“It didn’t.”

Ryan’s eyes moved toward Elena.

“She knows.”

Dante looked at his mother.

Elena’s face tightened.

Ryan continued.

“Gabriel wanted out. Your father wouldn’t let him.”

Clara whispered, “His father?”

Ryan shook his head.

“Not his father.”

He looked directly at Elena.

“Her brother.”

Elena went still.

Dante stared.

“Uncle Victor?”

Ryan nodded.

“Victor Moretti ordered the car sabotaged.”

Elena closed her eyes.

Dante’s voice dropped.

“Victor died two years ago.”

Ryan laughed bitterly.

“That’s what you were told.”

Silence.

Dante stepped closer.

“You’re saying Victor is alive?”

Ryan looked toward the window.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know.”

Dante grabbed the back of a chair, not Ryan.

The wood creaked under his hand.

Ryan continued quickly.

“He stayed hidden because the federal cases were closing. He kept loyal men running businesses through fronts.”

Clara’s mind returned to the debt collectors.

“Were the men chasing you connected to Victor?”

Ryan nodded.

“That’s why I offered Clara.”

Clara looked disgusted.

Ryan rushed on.

“I thought if they realized she was Gabriel’s old girlfriend, they might keep me alive.”

Dante’s face changed.

“You gave them Clara because of Gabriel?”

Ryan’s voice cracked.

“I was desperate.”

Clara whispered, “You didn’t sell me for money.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You sold me as information.”

“I didn’t know Noah was Gabriel’s biological son until I found the hospital papers.”

“When?”

“Last month.”

Clara’s stomach dropped.

That was exactly when Ryan’s behavior changed.

The sleepless nights.

The frantic gambling.

The new debts.

“You started borrowing money after discovering Noah’s father.”

Ryan nodded.

“Why?”

“I was trying to get enough cash to disappear.”

“With us?”

Ryan cried now.

“Yes.”

Clara stared at him.

She wanted to believe that.

She hated herself for wanting to.

Dante asked, “Who knows about Noah?”

Ryan looked toward the room.

“I told one man.”

Clara’s body went cold.

“Who?”

Ryan’s face crumpled.

“I don’t know his real name.”

“What does he call himself?”

“The Broker.”

Dante’s security team exchanged glances.

Marco stepped forward.

“I’ve heard that name.”

Dante turned.

“From where?”

“Old collection networks. Private security. People who buy information.”

Ryan nodded.

“He works for Victor.”

Clara looked toward the room where Noah was.

“Then we leave.”

Dante immediately said, “Yes.”

Ryan stared.

“You can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because they already know where you are.”

Dante’s eyes sharpened.

Ryan pointed toward the ceiling.

“This apartment.”

Marco’s hand went to his earpiece.

“How?”

Ryan whispered, “I didn’t come here willingly.”

Dante looked at him.

Ryan slowly opened his jacket.

Taped beneath the lining was a tiny black device.

A blinking red light appeared.

Marco swore.

Ryan whispered, “They wanted me to lead them to Noah.”

The lights in the apartment went out.

Total darkness swallowed the room.

Then the elevator bell sounded in the hallway.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

Three times.

And someone began entering Dante’s private floor.
