Chapter 1 - The Girl Who Recognized My Secret

A little girl grabbed my sleeve outside my company building and whispered:
"Your tattoo is exactly like my mommy's."
When mafia boss Adrian Voss arrived, he found the child pointing at the wolf tattoo hidden beneath his cuff.
But the woman behind her lifted her sleeve and revealed the missing half of the symbol.
Adrian suddenly realized his brother's death was never what he believed.
I had spent thirteen years making sure nobody saw that tattoo.
Not my employees.
Not my enemies.
Not even the people closest to me.
The wolf inked across my forearm was more than a tattoo. It was a promise. A warning. A reminder of the only person in this world who had ever made me feel like I wasn't made entirely of stone.
My younger brother, Luca.
And I had buried that part of myself the same night I buried him.
The black sedan stopped in front of Voss International Tower at 6:42 p.m. on a Thursday evening.
The driver opened my door.
I stepped onto the sidewalk wearing the same black suit I wore every day. Perfectly tailored. No wrinkles. No mistakes.
That was the image everyone knew.
Adrian Voss.
The man who controlled one of the largest private security empires on the East Coast.
The man who could make a phone call and end someone's career before breakfast.
The man people feared because they believed I had no weakness.
They were almost right.
I adjusted my cufflink as my security team stepped out behind me.
The glass doors of my headquarters reflected my face back at me.
Cold.
Controlled.
Untouchable.
At least, that's what everyone thought.
"Mr. Voss."
My assistant, Clara, approached quickly with a tablet in her hand.
"The board meeting has been moved to seven. The investors from Chicago are already waiting upstairs."
I nodded.
"Tell them I'll be there."
I took three steps toward the entrance.
Then I heard a voice.
Small.
Clear.
Unexpected.
"Wait."
I stopped.
Not because I was used to people stopping me.
I wasn't.
I stopped because the voice wasn't afraid.
A little girl stood beside a woman near the building entrance.
She couldn't have been older than seven.
She wore a yellow sweater and carried a small backpack over one shoulder.
Her mother immediately reached down.
"Emma, don't bother him."
But the girl wasn't looking at her mother.
She was looking at me.
More specifically, she was looking at my hand.
My cuff had moved slightly when I walked.
Just enough.
Just enough for the edge of the wolf tattoo to show.
The girl's eyes widened.
She stepped closer.
My security team immediately moved forward.
I raised one hand.
They stopped.
The little girl pointed at my arm.
"That wolf..."
Her mother looked embarrassed.
"Emma, that's not polite."
But the girl shook her head.
"No, Mommy. It is."
She looked back at me.
"My mommy has the other one."
For a second, I thought I had misunderstood her.
The noise of the city disappeared.
The conversations around me faded.
All I heard was that one sentence.
My mommy has the other one.
I slowly pulled my sleeve down.
"What's your name?"
The girl answered without hesitation.
"Emma."
"And why do you think you know my tattoo?"
She looked confused by the question.
"Because Mommy said it belonged to someone important."
The woman's expression changed instantly.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
That was when I finally looked at her.
She had been standing quietly behind the girl.
Early thirties.
Dark brown hair.
Calm face.
But her eyes told a different story.
She looked like someone who had spent years running from something.
"Who are you?" I asked.
The woman tightened her grip on her daughter's shoulder.
"My name is Elena."
The name meant nothing.
But the way she said it did.
Like she was preparing herself for something painful.
I studied her carefully.
"You know who I am?"
She didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
My security team watched closely.
My instincts had kept me alive for years.
And every instinct I had was screaming.
Something about this woman was connected to me.
Something buried.
Something dangerous.
"Show me."
The words came out before I even realized I had said them.
Elena looked at me.
"Excuse me?"
"The tattoo."
Her face went pale.
The little girl looked between us.
"Mommy, show him."
Elena closed her eyes briefly.
Then she slowly rolled up the sleeve of her white blouse.
The world seemed to stop.
There it was.
A wolf.
But not the same wolf.
The missing half.
The two pieces together created a symbol I hadn't seen since the night my brother died.
My breathing changed.
For the first time in thirteen years, I forgot how to hide my emotions.
Because nobody knew about that symbol.
Nobody.
Except Luca.
And me.
I stepped closer.
"Where did you get that?"
Elena looked down at the tattoo.
Her fingers trembled.
"He gave it to me."
My chest tightened.
"Who?"
She looked directly into my eyes.
And before she answered, I already knew.
I just didn't want to believe it.
"Your brother."
The street around us suddenly felt too quiet.
My brother had been declared dead thirteen years ago.
A car explosion.
A closed investigation.
A funeral with an empty coffin.
I had spent years hunting for the people responsible.
I had destroyed every enemy connected to that night.
But nobody had ever mentioned a woman.
Nobody had ever mentioned a child.
I looked at Emma.
The little girl stared back at me with innocent eyes.
And for reasons I couldn't explain, my anger disappeared.
Something else replaced it.
Confusion.
A strange feeling I had not allowed myself to feel in years.
Hope.
No.
That was impossible.
I forced myself back into control.
"You're lying."
Elena nodded slowly.
"I expected you to say that."
"Then explain."
She looked around.
Not at me.
At my security guards.
At the cameras above the entrance.
At the people watching from inside the building.
Like she was afraid someone else was listening.
"Not here."
I stepped closer.
"You came here."
Her voice became quieter.
"Because I knew eventually someone would try to find us."
Those words hit harder than they should have.
"Someone?"
Elena didn't answer.
She looked at Emma.
The little girl reached for her mother's hand.
And Elena whispered:
"Your brother didn't die because of an accident."
Everything inside me went still.
I had spent thirteen years believing one story.
One painful story.
One carefully constructed lie.
I looked at the woman in front of me.
At the tattoo.
At the child who carried a secret she didn't understand.
Then my phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown number.
I opened it.
There was only one sentence.
"Adrian, if you are seeing the wolf tattoo again, you need to run."
I stared at the screen.
Because underneath the message was a photograph.
A photograph taken that morning.
It showed Elena and Emma entering my company building.
But someone had circled Emma's face.
May you like
And written three words beneath it:
She is alive.
