Chapter 8 - The Night Grant Came Back

Police placed Evelyn under protection.
Tomorrow's date was not a threat.
It was an appointment.
Rebecca's notes indicated someone planned to retrieve something from Evelyn's house.
Ortiz proposed using the house under surveillance.
Evelyn agreed.
Claire did not.
“You are not bait.”
“I'm not planning to wrestle anybody.”
“You broke an industrial lock with a crowbar.”
“That was one time.”
“Mom.”
Evelyn smiled faintly.
But she listened.
Police controlled the operation.
Evelyn and Claire stayed elsewhere.
At 11:43 p.m., someone entered Evelyn's house.
Officers moved in.
The intruder was Grant.
He had been temporarily released into federal custody as part of his cooperation and had slipped away during transport after exploiting a procedural mistake.
He wasn't there to hurt Evelyn.
He went directly to David's old study.
Police arrested him holding a small wooden box.
Inside was another drive.
Grant told Ortiz he came because Voss had revealed its location.
The drive contained the master list of victims.
Not just money.
People.
Families.
Patients whose records had been manipulated.
Grant claimed he wanted to deliver it before someone destroyed it.
“Why not tell police?” Claire asked later.
Grant looked at her through the interview-room glass.
“Because I didn't know who I could trust.”
Claire almost laughed.
“That sentence from him is unbelievable.”
She agreed to speak with Grant once.
Only once.
They sat across a table.
Grant looked at her.
“I'm sorry.”
Claire's face remained still.
“I know.”
“I loved you.”
“I know.”
He looked surprised.
Claire continued.
“That doesn't make what you did smaller.”
Grant cried.
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“You chained me in our basement.”
He lowered his head.
Claire leaned forward.
“You don't get to turn fear into love. You don't get to tell yourself you protected me because admitting what you did is harder.”
Grant whispered:
“I know.”
“No. You're beginning to know.”
Claire stood.
He looked up.
“Will you ever forgive me?”
Claire paused.
“Maybe.”
Hope flashed across his face.
Then she finished.
“But forgiveness won't bring me back.”
She walked out.
Evelyn waited in the hallway.
Claire took her mother's hand.
“Let's go home.”
That night they slept peacefully.
Or tried.
At 3:07 a.m., Evelyn heard tapping.
She sat upright.
Three short.
Three long.
Three short.
Her heart exploded.
She ran into the hallway.
Claire opened her bedroom door simultaneously.
“You heard it?”
“Yes.”
Again.
Tap tap tap.
The sound came from downstairs.
Police protection remained outside.
Evelyn called Ortiz.
Officers entered first.
They followed the tapping.
Kitchen.
Laundry room.
Heating vent.
Inside the vent was a small electronic device programmed to produce the SOS pattern.
Attached to it was a note.
Claire read it.
YOU FOUND THE BASEMENT.
NOW FIND THE BEGINNING.
Below it:
ST. MATTHEW’S. SUBLEVEL B.
Ortiz ordered nobody to move until a team checked the hospital.
Sublevel B had been sealed for renovations twelve years earlier.
Blueprints showed an old records room.
Investigators opened it.
Inside were boxes dating back decades.
Claire and Evelyn were brought only after it was secured.
One box bore David's name.
Inside were documents showing the truth went further back than anyone imagined.
David had not discovered the conspiracy six years ago.
He had been investigating it for seventeen years.
Since Claire was in high school.
Then Evelyn found a letter addressed to her.
She opened it.
David wrote:
Evelyn, there is one thing I never told you because I was ashamed.
Her hands trembled.
Claire stood beside her.
The next line read:
I helped create the system Voss later corrupted.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
David had not been an innocent outsider.
He designed the accounting structure that allowed money to move invisibly.
At first it was legal.
Then Voss exploited it.
David discovered the abuse and spent years trying to undo what he helped build.
Claire whispered:
“Dad was trying to fix it.”
“Yes.”
At the bottom of the box was a cassette recorder.
Ortiz pressed play.
David's voice filled the room.
“I've made mistakes. If Claire ever hears this, tell her something for me.”
Static.
Then:
“Tell her the worst thing fear can do isn't make you weak. It's make you justify hurting people you love.”
Claire began crying.
Grant had done exactly that.
Then another voice entered the recording.
A woman.
Evelyn recognized it.
Rebecca.
“You're too late, David.”
David answered:
“No. I'm finally early.”
A door slammed.
Footsteps.
Then Rebecca said one final sentence.
“The person you should fear isn't me.”
David asked:
“Then who?”
The recording ended.
Ortiz examined the cassette.
Someone had physically cut the tape.
But inside the box was another envelope.
It contained one photograph.
David standing beside Voss.
Rebecca behind them.
And a fourth person.
Evelyn stared.
“No.”
Claire whispered:
“Mom?”
The fourth person was Thomas.

And written beneath his face were two words:
THE FOUNDER.
