Chapter 6 - The Evidence That Changed Everything

Isaac had always believed that numbers told the truth.
People could lie.
People could manipulate emotions.
People could rewrite memories until they believed their own version of events.
But numbers were different.
A bank transfer.
A signed document.
A transaction record.
A date.
A time.
Those things did not care about family relationships.
They did not care about excuses.
They simply showed what happened.
And what Isaac had discovered about Liam was worse than he expected.
The following morning, Isaac sat inside his temporary office at a small hotel near his parents’ neighborhood.
He had moved his work there because the farmhouse was not a place where he could focus.
Not yet.
Every corner of that house carried memories.
His mother cooking.
His father repairing broken furniture.
Him and Liam arguing over television channels as children.
It was difficult to investigate a betrayal while surrounded by reminders of the person Liam used to be.
Daniel Foster sat across from him with a thick folder.
“I went deeper into the records.”
Isaac looked up.
“And?”
Daniel opened the folder.
“There are several layers.”
Isaac frowned.
“Meaning?”
“Liam didn’t simply withdraw money.”
Daniel placed several pages on the table.
“He moved it through different accounts.”
Isaac studied the documents.
The pattern became clear.
Small transfers.
Different companies.
Different names.
A trail designed to make the money difficult to follow.
“He planned this.”
Daniel nodded.
“That’s what it looks like.”
Isaac leaned back.
For a moment, he said nothing.
The hardest part was accepting that this was not one mistake.
Not one bad decision.
It was a system.
A choice repeated over and over again.
“How much did he take?”
Daniel looked down.
“Approximately four million dollars.”
Isaac closed his eyes.
Four million.
The number was almost impossible to process.
But the money itself was not what hurt the most.
It was knowing what that money represented.
Medicine.
Security.
Comfort.
A better life for the two people who had sacrificed everything for their children.
“Find everything,” Isaac said.
Daniel looked at him.
“Everything?”
“Yes.”
His voice became firm.
“I want every account. Every company. Every transfer.”
Daniel nodded.
“There’s one more thing.”
Isaac looked at him.
“What?”
“The house.”
A familiar anger returned.
“What about it?”
Daniel slid another document forward.
“The foreclosure process wasn’t caused only by missed payments.”
Isaac looked confused.
“What does that mean?”
“There was a second loan.”
Isaac stared.
“A second loan?”
Daniel nodded.
“Taken against the house.”
Isaac picked up the paper.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
The borrower’s name was not Samuel Perkins.
Not Teresa Perkins.
It was Liam.
Isaac’s hand tightened around the document.
“He used the house as collateral.”
“Yes.”
“And my parents didn’t know?”
Daniel didn’t answer immediately.
But Isaac already knew.
They didn’t.
His parents had not only lost money.
They had almost lost the place where they had built their entire lives.
The house was never just a property.
It was their history.
Their memories.
Their family.
Isaac stood.
“I need to see him.”
Daniel looked concerned.
“Isaac.”
“I’m not going there to fight.”
He picked up the documents.
“I’m going there because I need him to tell me the truth.”
Later that afternoon, Isaac arrived at Liam’s apartment.
The place looked exactly like he expected.
Modern furniture.
Expensive decorations.
A large television.
Everything designed to look successful.
But now Isaac noticed things he had ignored before.
The expensive watch.
The designer shoes.
The luxury items.
Things that suddenly looked different.
Not signs of success.
Signs of stolen years.
Liam opened the door.
He looked surprised.
“You came.”
Isaac walked inside.
“We need to talk.”
Liam stepped aside.
Neither brother sat down.
The tension between them was too heavy.
Isaac placed the documents on the table.
“You borrowed money against Mom and Dad’s house.”
Liam froze.
For a second, his face revealed everything.
Then he looked away.
“I was going to fix it.”
Isaac shook his head.
“You keep saying that.”
“Because I was.”
“When?”
Liam remained silent.
Isaac stepped closer.
“You knew the house was at risk.”
“I was handling it.”
“No.”
Isaac’s voice became sharper.
“You were hiding it.”
Liam looked frustrated.
“You don’t understand.”
Isaac laughed quietly.
“I’m starting to understand perfectly.”
“No, you don’t.”
Liam’s voice rose.
“You think I woke up one day and decided to destroy everything?”
Isaac didn’t answer.
Because he wanted to hear what Liam would say next.
“I was drowning.”
Liam looked around the apartment.
“I had debts. I had people demanding money. I had nowhere to go.”
“So you took from them.”
“I thought I could replace it.”
“You keep saying that.”
“Because it’s true!”
Liam’s voice cracked.
“I thought one good opportunity would fix everything.”
Isaac watched him.
For the first time, he saw something different.
Not just greed.
Fear.
Liam had been afraid.
Afraid of failure.
Afraid of admitting he had lost control.
But fear did not excuse what he did.
“You should have told us.”
Liam looked down.
“I was ashamed.”
Isaac’s expression softened slightly.
Because that was the first honest thing Liam had said.
“I was ashamed that I wasn’t like you.”
Isaac shook his head.
“You don’t know anything about me.”
Liam looked up.
“What?”
“You saw the company. The success. The money.”
Isaac paused.
“You never saw the nights I slept in my office. You never saw how many times I almost failed.”
Liam stayed silent.
“I struggled too.”
The room became quiet.
“But I asked for help.”
Liam looked away.
“No.”
Isaac corrected him.
“You didn’t.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Liam had chosen secrecy.
He had chosen lies.
And those choices had hurt everyone.
Then Isaac noticed something on the shelf.
A framed photograph.
It was old.
A picture of their family.
Samuel.
Teresa.
Isaac.
Liam.
All four of them standing in front of the farmhouse.
Before everything changed.
Isaac walked closer.
“You kept this?”
Liam looked at the picture.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Liam’s expression became sad.
“Because that was the last time everything felt normal.”
For a moment, Isaac saw his brother again.
Not the man who stole from their parents.
The child who used to sit beside him at the dinner table.
The teenager who helped him fix his bicycle.
The brother who once protected him.
And that made everything more painful.
Because betrayal only hurts when there was love before it.
Isaac took a deep breath.
“There’s still time to tell the whole truth.”
Liam looked at him.
“What happens if I do?”
“That depends.”
“On what?”
“On whether you’re finally ready to stop protecting yourself.”
Liam sat down.
His shoulders dropped.
“I didn’t take all of it.”
Isaac looked at him carefully.
“What?”
Liam hesitated.
“There was someone else.”
The room became still.
Isaac’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Liam looked nervous.
“Someone who helped me move the money.”
“Who?”
Before Liam could answer, his phone suddenly rang.
He looked at the screen.
And his expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
Isaac noticed.
“Who is it?”
Liam didn’t answer.
The phone continued ringing.
Finally, Liam rejected the call.
Isaac stared at him.
“You’re afraid of someone.”
Liam remained silent.
And that silence confirmed everything.
This was bigger than one brother stealing from his parents.
Someone else had been involved.
Someone else had known about the money.
Someone else had helped keep the truth hidden.
Isaac picked up the documents.
“I’m going to find out who.”
Liam looked at him.
“Isaac.”
His voice sounded different.
Not defensive.
Not angry.
A warning.
“Be careful.”
Isaac stopped.
“What did you just say?”
Liam looked toward the window.
“Some people don’t want the truth coming out.”
Isaac studied his brother.
For ten years, Liam had been the person hiding the truth.
Now, for the first time, he looked like someone who was also afraid of it.
That night, Isaac returned to his parents’ house.
But before he entered, he noticed something strange.
A black vehicle parked across the street.
The lights were off.
Someone was sitting inside.
Watching.
Isaac stood still.
His instincts immediately warned him.
This was no longer only about family betrayal.
There was another person involved.
Someone who had benefited from the lies.
Someone who had helped steal from his parents.
May you like
And now that Isaac was searching for the truth…
Someone was watching him search.
