Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Beneath The Shaw Estate

The unknown message remained open on my phone.
"Ask Margaret what happened in the basement."
I stared at those words for nearly a full minute.
Not because I didn't understand them.
Because I understood them too well.
Someone wanted me to look somewhere.
Someone wanted me to find something.
And whoever sent that message knew enough about my wife's family to know exactly where to point me.
I looked through the ICU glass again.
Evelyn was still unconscious.
Her chest slowly rose and fell with the help of the machines.
Seven months away.
Seven months of believing that my return would fix everything.
I had imagined holding her hand at our kitchen table.
I had imagined hearing her laugh again.
I had imagined ordinary days.
A cup of coffee.
A quiet morning.
A life without orders.
Instead, I was standing in a hospital hallway wondering if the people closest to my wife had tried to destroy her.
I walked toward Detective Harold Finch.
He was still speaking quietly with Margaret Shaw.
The moment he saw me approaching, his expression changed.
Not fear.
Concern.
The kind of concern people showed when they knew something they didn't want to say.
"Detective."
He turned.
"Major."
I held up my phone.
"Someone just sent me a message."
His eyes moved to the screen.
I watched his face carefully.
A normal detective would react with curiosity.
He reacted with recognition.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
"You know something about this."
Finch immediately looked away.
"I don't know what you're talking about."
"You recognized it."
"No."
"You did."
He lowered his voice.
"Major Rowan, you need to be careful."
I almost laughed.
"Careful?"
I looked back at Evelyn's room.
"My wife is fighting for her life."
Then I looked at Margaret.
"Her family is standing outside smiling."
I stepped closer.
"And now someone is telling me to investigate their basement."
Finch's jaw tightened.
"Delete the message."
The answer surprised me.
Not because he said it.
Because of how quickly he said it.
"Why?"
"Because you don't understand what you're dealing with."
I stared at him.
"Then explain."
He stayed silent.
That silence told me everything.
"You investigated my wife's attack."
"Yes."
"You saw something."
"I saw enough."
"Enough to know who did it?"
His eyes shifted toward Margaret.
That was all I needed.
I lowered my voice.
"Detective, are you protecting my wife?"
He looked at Evelyn's room.
Then back at me.
"I'm trying to prevent more people from getting hurt."
"That isn't an answer."
"It is the only one I can give you."
Before I could respond, Margaret approached.
"Is there a problem?"
Her voice was calm.
Too calm.
I turned toward her.
"Someone told me to ask about your basement."
For the first time since I arrived, Margaret's expression changed.
Not much.
Most people wouldn't notice.
But I was trained to notice everything.
A slight tightening around the eyes.
A brief pause before breathing.
A tiny movement of her hand toward her necklace.
Fear.
Gone in less than a second.
But it was there.
"The basement?"
She smiled.
"That's a strange thing to mention."
"Is it?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because our basement is just storage."
I watched her.
"Then why did you look afraid?"
Her smile disappeared.
"I did not."
"You did."
Margaret stepped closer.
"You just returned from a stressful deployment. You are exhausted. Angry. Looking for someone to blame."
I looked directly at her.
"I am looking for the person who almost killed my wife."
Nobody spoke.
The hallway became completely silent.
Then Faith whispered:
"Grant..."
Everyone looked at her.
Faith immediately lowered her eyes.
Margaret turned.
"Go wait outside."
Faith didn't move.
For the first time, I saw someone in that family refuse Margaret.
"Faith."
Her voice became colder.
But Faith still looked at me.
"There was something..."
She stopped.
Margaret walked toward her.
"Don't."
One word.
Quiet.
But powerful.
Faith's face changed.
She looked terrified.
I stepped between them.
"What happened?"
Faith opened her mouth.
Then the hospital alarm suddenly sounded.
Everyone turned.
A nurse rushed into Evelyn's room.
"Her heart rate is dropping!"
I moved instantly.
Doctors and nurses surrounded my wife.
I stood behind the glass watching.
The woman I loved was fighting for every breath.
And behind me stood the people who might know why.
For ten minutes, nobody spoke.
Finally, the doctor stepped out.
"She stabilized."
I released a breath I didn't realize I was holding.
"Can I see her?"
"Briefly."
I entered the room.
I took Evelyn's hand.
Her fingers were cold.
"Evelyn."
My voice cracked.
"I don't know what happened."
I looked at her face.
"But I promise you something."
I leaned closer.
"I will find out."
A small movement happened.
Almost impossible to notice.
Her fingers moved.
I froze.
"Evelyn?"
Nothing.
I looked at the monitor.
Then back at her hand.
Maybe I imagined it.
Maybe I wanted it too badly.
Then her finger moved again.
This time, clearly.
I grabbed the nurse button.
"She's responding."
The nurse rushed in.
"Mrs. Rowan?"
Evelyn's eyes remained closed.
But her hand tightened around mine.
The nurse looked shocked.
"Keep talking to her."
I leaned closer.
"Evelyn, it's Grant."
Her breathing changed.
A weak sound escaped her throat.
I moved closer.
"What?"
Her lips barely moved.
I couldn't understand.
"Evelyn, try again."
Another whisper.
I brought my ear closer.
And then I heard it.
One word.
"Basement..."
My entire body went still.
She wasn't telling me where to look.
She was warning me.
"Evelyn?"
Her eyes opened slightly.
Only for a moment.
But she was awake.
And she looked terrified.
"Who..."
Her voice was broken.
I held her hand.
"Who did this to you?"
Her eyes filled with fear.
She tried to speak.
Then the machines began beeping faster.
The nurses pushed me away.
"Sir, you need to step back."
"No."
"Sir."
I stepped back.
But I never took my eyes off her.
Because before the nurses closed the curtain, Evelyn looked directly at me.
And mouthed three words.
"Don't trust..."
Then the curtain blocked my view.
I stood there frozen.
Don't trust who?
Margaret?
The sisters?
The detective?
Someone else?
I walked out of the room.
The hallway was empty.
Except for Faith.
She was waiting.
"You heard her, didn't you?"
I stared at her.
"Heard what?"
Faith looked around nervously.
Then she reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small metal key.
My eyes locked onto it.
"What is that?"
Her hands shook.
"The key to the Shaw estate basement."
I didn't move.
"Why do you have it?"
"Because Evelyn gave it to me."
My heartbeat changed.
"When?"
"Two days before she was attacked."
I looked at the key.
Then at Faith.
"What did she tell you?"
Faith swallowed.
"She said if anything happened to her..."
The hallway lights flickered.
She lowered her voice.
"She said you were the only person who could expose them."
I looked toward the ICU.
My wife had been trying to leave me a message.
A warning.
A path.
Faith placed the key in my hand.
Then she whispered:
"But you need to know something about that basement."
"What?"
Her face turned pale.
"The last person who opened it..."
She stopped.
A sound came from the end of the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Approaching.
Faith looked behind me.
And her expression changed.
"Major..."
I turned around.
Because standing at the end of the hospital corridor was someone who should not have been there.
Margaret Shaw was holding a photograph.
May you like
And on the back of it was written one sentence.
"Grant Rowan was never supposed to come home."
