Chapter 5 - The House That Remembered Everything

The car door was open: "Daniel, don't go there."

Sarah grabbed my arm before I could step outside.

But I was done waiting.

For years, everyone had been protecting me from the truth.

My mother.

My father's old friends.

Even Sarah.

They all decided what I was allowed to know.

But nobody asked what I deserved to know.

I looked at Sarah.

"Who is in that car?"

She didn't answer.

That was enough.

I walked toward the front door.

"Daniel."

Emily's voice stopped me.

I turned around.

She was standing at the top of the stairs, holding our son.

She looked exhausted.

But she wasn't afraid anymore.

"Be careful."

Two simple words.

But they meant everything.

I nodded.

"I'll come back."

I wanted to believe those words.

I needed to believe them.

Because for the first time since I returned home, I wasn't just fighting for answers.

I was fighting for my family.

I walked outside.

The night air was cold.

The car was parked near the driveway.

The driver's door was open.

Nobody was inside.

I approached slowly.

The same key from my father's box was lying on the driver's seat.

Beside it was a piece of paper.

I picked it up.

Three words.

"Come alone, Daniel."

My heart tightened.

Someone wanted me away from Emily and Sarah.

Someone wanted me alone.

I looked back at the house.

Emily was watching from the window.

I knew I should stay.

I knew walking into an unknown situation was dangerous.

But I also knew one thing.

The answers were waiting for me.

And I had spent too many years living inside a lie.

I got into my car.

Sarah came running outside.

"You can't go alone."

I looked at her.

"You said my father wanted me protected."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Then help me understand what happened to him."

Sarah looked down.

For a moment, she looked like someone who had been carrying a heavy secret for too long.

"Your father's house."

She whispered.

"That's where everything started."

The old house was thirty minutes away.

The same house where I spent my childhood.

The same house where my father died.

I hadn't returned there in years.

Not because I hated it.

Because I couldn't explain why being there felt wrong.

Like the walls remembered something I didn't.

Sarah followed me.

She refused to let me go alone.

When we arrived, the house looked exactly the same.

Old.

Quiet.

Empty.

The front door was locked.

I pulled out the key from the box.

It fit perfectly.

The lock clicked.

The sound echoed through the entire house.

I stepped inside.

Immediately, memories came back.

My father's voice.

His old chair.

The smell of his books.

Everything I had forgotten suddenly returned.

Sarah stood behind me.

"Your father loved this place."

I looked around.

"Then why did my mother say he abandoned us?"

Sarah didn't answer.

Because we both knew.

The answer was painful.

We walked through the hallway.

The old family pictures were still hanging on the wall.

My younger self.

My father.

My mother.

A perfect family.

A perfect lie.

Then I noticed something.

One picture was missing.

A small empty space on the wall.

I touched the dust outline.

"Something was here."

Sarah looked closer.

"Your father kept that picture hidden."

"Why?"

She swallowed.

"Because of who was in it."

I looked at her.

"Who?"

Before she could answer, a sound came from upstairs.

A door closing.

Slowly.

We both froze.

Someone was inside.

Sarah whispered:

"That's impossible."

I looked at her.

"Why?"

Her face turned pale.

"Because nobody knows this house still has power."

I moved toward the stairs.

Sarah grabbed my shoulder.

"Daniel."

I turned.

She looked terrified.

"Your father wasn't alone the night he died."

The words stopped me.

"What?"

Sarah's voice shook.

"There was someone else here."

I stared at her.

"Who?"

She opened her mouth.

But before she could answer...

A light turned on upstairs.

A single room.

The room where my father used to work.

I walked up slowly.

Every step felt heavier.

The door was closed.

A faint sound came from inside.

Someone moving.

I reached for the handle.

Then I stopped.

Because I remembered the message.

"Come alone."

But I wasn't alone.

Sarah was behind me.

And whoever was inside knew.

I slowly opened the door.

The room was empty.

At least it looked empty.

The desk was covered in dust.

The chair was pushed back.

The shelves were untouched.

Then I noticed something.

The old computer on the desk was turned on.

Impossible.

I walked closer.

The screen showed one file.

A video file.

Created today.

The name of the file was:

"FOR DANIEL."

My hands became cold.

I clicked it.

The video started.

My father appeared again.

But this time, he looked different.

More serious.

More afraid.

"Daniel."

His voice filled the room.

"If you are seeing this, then your mother found the first file."

I looked at Sarah.

She covered her mouth.

My father continued.

"But the first file only shows what she did."

A pause.

"The second file shows why she did it."

My breathing stopped.

The screen flickered.

My father's face disappeared for a second.

Then returned.

"There is something you need to know about your mother."

I leaned closer.

The next words changed everything.

"She wasn't trying to protect you from Emily."

My heart raced.

"She was trying to protect herself from Emily finding out the truth."

The video stopped.

A loading symbol appeared.

Then a message appeared on the screen.

"Enter password."

I stared at it.

I didn't know the password.

Neither did Sarah.

Then I noticed something written on the desk.

A small note.

My father's handwriting.

Four numbers.

06-12-08.

I typed it.

The computer unlocked.

A folder appeared.

Inside were dozens of files.

Documents.

Photos.

Recordings.

And one folder marked:

"THE NIGHT DANIEL WAS BORN."

I froze.

My father wasn't investigating my mother's actions.

He was investigating something that happened before I was old enough to remember.

I opened the folder.

The first file was a scanned document.

A hospital record.

My name was written on it.

But beneath my name was another name.

A name I had never seen before.

Then the door behind us slowly opened.

Sarah turned around.

Her face lost all color.

Because the person standing there was someone she thought had disappeared years ago.

May you like

And the person whispered:

"Daniel... you were never supposed to find out who your real family was."
