Chapter 5 - The Daughter Who Survived

The woman standing beside Daniel Reeves held my grandfather’s missing letter in her hand.
She looked at me with tears in her eyes.
Then she whispered:
"Sarah... I’m your sister."
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The hallway disappeared.
The voices around me became distant.
All I could see was her face.
A stranger.
A stranger who somehow carried a piece of my own family.
A stranger who knew my name.
"You’re Lily?" I asked.
The woman nodded slowly.
Twenty years of secrets.
Twenty years of lies.
Twenty years of my father pretending she never existed.
All standing in front of me.
"I thought you were dead."
The words escaped before I could stop them.
Lily looked down.
"So did everyone else."
My chest tightened.
I looked at Daniel.
"You knew?"
He nodded.
"I did."
Anger replaced the shock.
"You knew my sister was alive and you said nothing?"
Daniel didn't defend himself.
"I made a promise to your grandfather."
"A promise?"
My voice became sharper.
"My whole life was destroyed because people kept making promises and hiding the truth from me."
Lily stepped forward.
"Sarah..."
I looked at her.
And despite everything, despite the anger, despite the confusion, I saw something familiar.
Not her face.
Something deeper.
The same sadness I had seen in my grandfather's eyes.
The same feeling of being abandoned.
"I didn't want to come here this way," Lily said.
"Then how did you want to come?"
She looked toward the courtroom.
"Not with him watching."
I followed her eyes.
My father.
Michael Hartman.
Still sitting inside.
Still watching.
He wasn't shocked.
He wasn't confused.
He knew.
He knew exactly who she was.
And that terrified me.
Because it meant this wasn't a surprise.
It was a secret he had been protecting.
I stepped closer to Lily.
"Tell me everything."
She looked at Daniel.
Then at the letter in her hand.
"He can't hear this."
I nodded.
We moved into a small empty conference room near the courtroom.
Daniel closed the door behind us.
For the first time in hours, I was away from my father's eyes.
Lily placed the letter on the table.
"I found this hidden in your grandfather's office three months after he died."
I looked at it.
"The same letter?"
She nodded.
"Your grandfather made two copies."
I frowned.
"Why?"
"Because he knew someone might take one."
My stomach dropped.
"He knew my father would steal it."
"Yes."
Lily sat down.
She looked exhausted.
Like carrying the truth for two decades had finally become too heavy.
"Sarah, before I tell you what happened, you need to understand something."
"What?"
"Your father didn't lose me."
She paused.
"He gave me away."
The room went silent.
I felt anger rise again.
"How?"
Lily looked at the floor.
"When I was five, my mother died."
I listened.
"My father told everyone he was struggling. That he couldn't handle raising me alone."
Her voice shook.
"But the truth was different."
She looked at me.
"He had another life planned."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"He was involved with people who wanted something from my grandfather."
The farm.
The thought came immediately.
Lily nodded when she saw my expression.
"The land."
She said it quietly.
"Your father knew the farm was valuable. But he also knew Grandpa would never sell it."
"So he used you?"
Lily's eyes filled.
"Yes."
I felt sick.
"My father abandoned a five-year-old child because of property?"
Daniel spoke quietly.
"Not just property."
I looked at him.
"What else?"
He hesitated.
Then opened his bag.
He pulled out an old folder.
Inside were documents.
Police reports.
Medical records.
Photos.
My hands trembled as I looked through them.
The first page was dated twenty years earlier.
The title made my heart stop.
Missing Child Investigation.
Lily's name was written across the top.
I looked at her.
"You were reported missing."
She nodded.
"By your father."
I stared at the report.
"Why?"
"Because he needed a story."
I turned the page.
The details became clearer.
My father had claimed Lily disappeared during a family trip.
He claimed he searched everywhere.
He claimed he was a grieving father.
But the investigation had problems.
Missing evidence.
Unanswered questions.
Witness statements that disappeared.
"Grandpa knew."
Lily nodded.
"He found out the story wasn't true."
"How?"
She looked at Daniel.
Daniel answered.
"Because your grandfather found a security recording."
My eyes widened.
"Of what?"
"The night Lily disappeared."
The room became colder.
"What did it show?"
Daniel looked at Lily.
Then at me.
"It showed Michael leaving the farm with Lily."
I stopped.
"Leaving?"
"Yes."
"Where did he take her?"
Nobody answered.
That silence hurt more than any answer.
"Lily?"
She looked away.
"I don't know."
The words were painful.
"I only remember pieces."
"What pieces?"
She closed her eyes.
"A car."
"A dark road."
"My father arguing with someone."
My heart raced.
"Who?"
She opened her eyes.
"Your father said a name."
I leaned closer.
"What name?"
She swallowed.
"Thomas."
I froze.
"My grandfather?"
She nodded.
"He was angry. He kept saying Grandpa would ruin everything."
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened after that?"
Daniel took a deep breath.
"Your grandfather found Lily two days later."
My eyes widened.
"What?"
"He found her at a roadside motel."
I looked at Lily.
"Then why didn't he bring you home?"
Her face broke.
"Because Michael got there first."
The room went silent.
"He threatened him."
I felt my hands tighten.
"What did he threaten?"
Lily looked at the letter.
"That if Grandpa exposed him, I would disappear again."
My blood ran cold.
My father had used a child as leverage.
He had controlled my grandfather.
He had controlled Lily.
He had controlled everyone.
For twenty years.
"And Grandpa kept your secret?"
Lily nodded.
"He hid me because he believed keeping me alive was more important than winning."
I looked down.
My grandfather.
The man everyone thought was weak at the end.
He had been protecting people until his final breath.
Then I remembered the letter.
The one my father didn't want me to read.
"What does the letter say?"
Lily pushed it toward me.
"You should read it."
I unfolded the paper.
My grandfather's handwriting filled the page.
Sarah,
If Lily is standing beside you, then I failed to protect both of you the way I wanted.
My vision blurred.
I continued.
Your father will tell you he made mistakes.
He will tell you he was desperate.
He will tell you he had no choice.
Do not believe him.
Michael made choices.
Every single time.
I swallowed.
The next line made my heart stop.
The farm was never the only thing he wanted.
I looked at Lily.
Then continued reading.
He wanted the one thing that could destroy him.
Proof.
A sound came from outside the conference room.
A door closing.
Daniel immediately stood.
"Someone's here."
I folded the letter quickly.
Lily looked terrified.
"Sarah..."
"What?"
She pointed behind me.
At the small window.
A shadow moved outside.
Daniel reached for the door.
But before he opened it, my phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
My hands froze when I saw the words.
I know where the proof is hidden. Come alone, or your sister disappears again.
Daniel looked at my phone.
His face changed.
Because he recognized the number.
May you like
And then he whispered the one thing I never expected to hear:
"Sarah... that message came from your father's phone."
