Chapter 5 - The Message My Father Left Behind

AVERY MITCHELL — PLAY THIS BEFORE YOU OPEN THE BOX.

The words stayed on the screen.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the impossible had just become real.

My father had left something for me.

But someone else had been inside this room.

Someone who knew we would find it.

Someone who had enough access to record a message after twelve years.

Daniel stepped closer.

"Don't touch anything yet."

I looked at him.

"You said my father left this."

He nodded.

"He did."

"Then why is there a new recording?"

Daniel didn't answer.

And that scared me more than anything.

Because Daniel Cross had spent twelve years protecting my father's secret.

But now...

he looked afraid.

Commander Ward moved toward the equipment.

"Everyone step back."

He examined the device carefully.

"No network connection."

Briggs looked around the room.

"Then how did someone activate it?"

Nobody answered.

Because there was only one possibility.

Someone had been here recently.

Someone knew we were coming.

I looked at the sealed box on the table.

My name was still written across it.

My father's handwriting.

The same handwriting from the envelope.

The same handwriting I remembered from childhood.

For years, I had wondered if I would ever see anything he left behind again.

Now I was standing inches away from the last message he ever prepared for me.

But suddenly...

I wasn't sure I wanted to open it.

Because every answer had brought another question.

Every truth had revealed a bigger lie.

Commander Ward looked at me.

"Avery."

I didn't look away from the box.

"What?"

"If this is what I think it is..."

He stopped.

"What?"

His expression was heavy.

"Your father didn't hide this because he wanted someone to find it."

I looked at him.

"Then why?"

"Because he wanted the right person to find it."

Daniel activated the recording.

The old monitor flickered.

Static filled the screen.

Then a face appeared.

My father.

Older than the photographs I remembered.

Tired.

Serious.

Alive.

My knees almost gave out.

I had spent twelve years imagining this moment.

But not like this.

Not inside a hidden room.

Not surrounded by people who had lied to me.

Not with the feeling that someone was still watching.

My father looked directly into the camera.

And for a second...

it felt like he was looking at me.

"Avery."

His voice broke something inside me.

Because it was real.

Not a memory.

Not a dream.

Him.

"If you're seeing this, it means I couldn't come back the way I promised."

I covered my mouth.

Briggs looked away.

Even he understood this wasn't a military matter anymore.

It was a daughter hearing from her father.

"I know you probably hate me."

My eyes filled.

"I know you think I left you."

He paused.

"I need you to know the truth."

The screen flickered.

"Leaving you was the hardest thing I ever did."

I whispered:

"Dad..."

Nobody heard me.

Or maybe they did.

Nobody interrupted.

"I discovered something inside our own organization. People I trusted were involved. People with power. People who could erase records, change reports, and make anyone disappear."

My father's expression became harder.

"Once they knew I had evidence, they came after everyone close to me."

The video paused for a second.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

"Especially you."

The room became silent.

I stared at the screen.

"Me?"

My father continued.

"I couldn't protect you while staying close to you."

His eyes looked different.

Not like a soldier.

Like a father.

"So I made a choice."

A choice.

The word hurt.

Because I had spent years believing he chose to leave me.

Now I was hearing that he chose to lose me.

"Your mother knew enough to keep you safe. But she didn't know everything."

I froze.

My mother.

Another secret.

Another person who had carried the truth.

"I left instructions with someone I trusted."

The video shifted slightly.

A document appeared.

A list.

Names.

"These are the people who helped me."

Then another page appeared.

"These are the people who betrayed me."

The screen moved too quickly.

But one name caught my attention.

A name I recognized.

Someone still alive.

Someone still serving.

Commander Ward stepped closer.

His face changed.

Because he saw it too.

"What is it?" I asked.

He didn't answer.

"Commander."

He looked at me.

And I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

The name on the screen was not a stranger.

It was someone at Fort Adams.

Someone who had been near us the entire time.

The video continued.

"If you're watching this, Avery, don't trust the first person who tells you they want to help."

My eyes moved toward Commander Ward.

Then Daniel.

Then Briggs.

"Everyone has a reason."

My father's voice became quieter.

"Even the people who believe they are doing the right thing."

The screen went black.

For a moment, nobody breathed.

Then another file appeared.

No title.

No description.

Just a date.

The date my father disappeared.

Daniel stepped forward.

"That's not supposed to be there."

Commander Ward turned.

"What do you mean?"

Daniel looked at the screen.

"Marcus only created one message."

The second file opened automatically.

A video started.

But this time...

it wasn't my father.

It was someone else.

A person sitting in darkness.

Their face hidden.

Their voice distorted.

"I know you found Marcus Mitchell's message."

My blood went cold.

The person continued.

"And I know Avery Mitchell is watching it."

Briggs immediately moved toward the monitor.

"How is this possible?"

The figure ignored him.

"You have been searching for answers."

A pause.

"But you don't understand what your father discovered."

The room felt colder.

"Your father wasn't investigating a conspiracy."

The figure leaned closer.

"He was investigating you."

I stared at the screen.

"What?"

Nobody answered.

The distorted voice continued.

"Marcus Mitchell spent years trying to understand why certain people were interested in Avery."

My heart started racing.

"Why certain organizations were tracking her."

"Why certain records about her childhood had been changed."

I looked at Commander Ward.

His face was pale.

The figure continued.

"Your father found out that Avery Mitchell was not just a witness."

A pause.

"She was the reason they started everything."

The video stopped.

The room exploded with silence.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't think.

Because suddenly the entire story had changed.

My father.

The corruption.

The missing evidence.

The people hunting him.

Everything had started before I even knew there was a problem.

Daniel slowly sat down.

Commander Ward looked like he had aged years in seconds.

I turned toward him.

"Tell me the truth."

He didn't answer.

"Commander."

His eyes met mine.

And finally...

he said:

"Your father never told you what happened the night you were born."

The words hit harder than anything else.

I stared at him.

"What does that mean?"

Ward looked at the sealed box.

Then at me.

"That box contains the reason everyone has been looking for you."

I walked toward the table.

My hands reached for the lock.

The metal key from Daniel's hand fit perfectly.

A click.

The box opened.

Inside was not a weapon.

Not documents.

Not evidence.

It was a photograph.

A photograph of me.

As a child.

Standing beside my father.

And written on the back were four words:

"She was never alone."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

Only one sentence.

Leave the room before they find you.

May you like

Then the lights turned off.

And from the hallway outside, someone whispered my name.
