Chapter 5 - The Name on Lily's Birth Certificate

Nathan opened the door.

The woman standing outside was the same woman from the security image.

Margaret Hale.

Older than he remembered, but alive.

Very much alive.

Daniel moved between them.

Margaret raised her hands.

"I'm not here to hurt anyone."

Nathan's voice was cold.

"You took Lily."

"I brought her somewhere safe."

"You removed a seven-year-old from a hospital without permission."

"I needed you to find Elena's letters."

"You could have called."

Margaret looked at Sarah.

"I didn't know who was listening."

Nathan stepped aside.

Margaret entered.

Sarah stared at her.

"We buried you."

"No. You buried an empty coffin."

"Why?"

"Because Victor's people were still looking."

Nathan's patience snapped.

"My father has been dead eleven years."

Margaret looked at him.

"Victor wasn't the last person protecting his secrets."

There it was again.

Someone else.

Nathan closed the door.

"Start from the beginning."

Margaret sat.

Thomas Hale had been Victor Moretti's accountant.

At first he had believed the financial transfers were legitimate.

Then he discovered forged signatures.

Elena's signatures.

Millions had been moved from trusts belonging to Elena's family.

Thomas told Elena.

Elena began gathering evidence.

Sarah discovered part of it accidentally while visiting Nathan.

Victor learned Sarah knew.

He decided she had to disappear from Nathan's life.

"Not die," Margaret clarified. "Victor wasn't a murderer."

Nathan's eyes narrowed.

"Comforting."

"He controlled people with money, fear, and secrets. He ruined lives. But Elena's death wasn't planned."

Sarah turned away.

Nathan noticed.

"What aren't you saying?"

Margaret looked at Sarah.

"You should tell him."

Sarah's hands trembled.

"The night Elena died, she came to see me."

Nathan went rigid.

"Where?"

"A motel outside Chicago."

"Why?"

"She was leaving Victor."

Nathan couldn't speak.

"She had documents. Money. The sewing machine. She told me we were both leaving."

"Together?"

"Not like that. She wanted to get me somewhere safe."

"What happened?"

"Victor found us."

Nathan closed his eyes.

He could picture his father.

Controlled.

Immaculate.

Terrifying without raising his voice.

"They argued," Sarah said. "Elena ran outside. It was raining. She drove away."

Nathan knew the official story.

His mother had lost control of her car.

"She crashed."

Sarah nodded.

"Victor told me if I ever contacted you, he'd make sure you believed I caused it."

Nathan stared.

"Did you?"

"No."

Margaret spoke.

"Thomas obtained the accident report years later. The crash was exactly that—a crash. No evidence of sabotage."

Nathan absorbed this.

His father hadn't killed Elena.

But his lies had put her on that road.

"What does Lily have to do with any of this?"

Sarah and Margaret exchanged a look.

Nathan saw it.

"No more."

Sarah whispered, "Lily was never supposed to be involved."

"She already is."

Margaret removed a folder from her bag.

Inside was another birth certificate.

Lily Bennett.

Same date.

Same mother.

Father:

Blank.

Nathan looked at Sarah.

"Why?"

"Because her father asked me."

"Who?"

Sarah looked toward Lily, who was asleep again.

"His name was Michael."

Nathan waited.

"Michael who?"

"Michael Moretti."

Nathan froze.

He had no brother.

At least, he thought he didn't.

Margaret continued.

"Victor had another son."

Nathan stared.

"No."

"Before he married Elena."

"No."

"Thomas discovered it while tracing the trusts."

Nathan felt sick.

"Where is Michael?"

Sarah's eyes lowered.

"Dead."

"When?"

"Before Lily was born."

Nathan looked at Lily.

His niece.

The word arrived unexpectedly.

Lily wasn't his daughter.

She was his brother's child.

A brother Nathan had never known existed.

Sarah explained that she'd met Michael years after leaving Chicago. Neither knew their connection at first.

Michael had grown up using his mother's surname.

When they discovered Victor was his father, everything changed.

Michael wanted nothing from the Moretti family.

He and Sarah built a quiet life.

Then Sarah became pregnant.

Before Lily was born, Michael died from an undiagnosed heart condition.

Thomas helped Sarah protect Lily's identity.

"If Victor's old associates discovered Michael had a child," Sarah said, "she could become part of the inheritance dispute."

Nathan looked at Margaret.

"So Thomas put himself on the certificate."

"No," Margaret said. "Someone else did that recently."

"Why?"

"To make you doubt Sarah."

Nathan understood.

Someone was trying to keep them divided.

His phone rang.

Daniel answered before Nathan could.

His expression changed.

"What?"

Daniel covered the receiver.

"Someone broke into your office."

Nathan stood.

"What was taken?"

"Nothing obvious."

"Then why break in?"

Daniel listened.

His eyes moved to the sewing machine.

"They left something."

Nathan returned to his office an hour later.

On his desk sat the missing half of Elena's letter.

He unfolded it.

Nate,

If your father ever tells you Sarah betrayed you, remember this: she protected you when she had every reason to walk away.

Thomas knows where the original trust is.

Do not trust—

The letter ended.

Another missing piece.

Nathan slammed his hand against the desk.

Daniel searched the room.

"Whoever is doing this wants you to follow a trail."

"Why?"

"Maybe because they can't reveal themselves directly."

"Or because they're controlling what I discover."

Nathan looked at the silver rose symbol drawn at the bottom.

Underneath was a handwritten number.

1989-317-44.

Not Elena's handwriting.

Daniel photographed it.

"I'll trace it."

Nathan's phone rang.

Hospital.

Sarah.

He answered.

"Nate, Lily found something in my bag."

"What?"

"A key."

Nathan looked at the key already in his hand.

"What kind?"

"Small. Brass."

"Don't touch anything else. I'm coming."

When he arrived, Lily held the key carefully.

"It was sewn inside my teddy bear."

Nathan stared at the bear.

The same teddy bear he'd noticed in Apartment 4B.

"Who gave you that?"

"Mom."

Sarah shook her head.

"I bought it secondhand."

Nathan examined the key.

A tiny number was stamped on it.

The final digits from the note.

Daniel searched the number.

His face changed.

"It's a bank deposit box."

"Whose?"

Daniel turned the screen toward Nathan.

The account holder had been dead for more than twenty years.

Elena Moretti.

Nathan stared.

Then Daniel read the access note attached to the account.

There were two authorized names.

Nathan Moretti.

And Sarah Bennett.

Sarah looked at Nathan.

Neither spoke.

Then Lily touched the teddy bear's torn seam.

"There's something else inside."

Nathan carefully opened it.

A tiny cassette tape slid into his palm.

On the label, in Elena's handwriting, were five words:

FOR NATE AND SARAH TOGETHER.

Nathan looked up.

Sarah whispered, "She knew."

Before Nathan could answer, the hospital television switched on by itself.

Security footage appeared on the screen.

Apartment 4B.

Someone was standing beside the sewing machine.

Then the stranger slowly turned toward the camera.

Nathan recognized him.

May you like

The man had attended Victor Moretti's funeral eleven years earlier.

And according to Nathan's records, he had been dead for six.
