Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The dining room went dead silent. Margaret was the first to react, standing up with a scowl. “Ethan, leave the room immediately! This is adult business, and your behavior is completely out of line.”
“Sit down, Grandmother,” Ethan said, his voice carrying an authority that shocked everyone in the room. He walked directly to the head of the table, opened his laptop, and placed it right in front of his father. “Dad, look at this.”
Vanessa’s eyes flicked nervously toward the laptop screen. She quickly stood up, holding her stomach with both hands. “Nathan, don't listen to him. The stress of your marital problems is clearly affecting Ethan. He’s just a child who can’t accept reality.”
“Shut up, Vanessa,” Claire interjected sharply, standing beside her son. “Let him speak.”
Ethan pressed play on the video. On the screen, high-definition footage showed Vanessa standing inside MorphoFX Studios. The audio was pristine. She could be heard complaining to Marcus that the second-trimester silicone belly wasn't adhering properly to her torso, demanding a stronger industrial adhesive so it wouldn't slip during family dinners.
Nathan stared at the screen, his jaw dropping open. The color drained from his face as he watched the woman sitting five feet away from him lift her shirt on video to reveal a completely flat stomach, fitting a flesh-colored silicone mold over her waist.
Margaret gasped, clutching her pearl necklace, her eyes darting between the screen and Vanessa. “What... what is the meaning of this? Vanessa, what is that?”
Vanessa’s face transformed instantly from calm elegance to utter panic. She staggered back a step, her hands trembling. “It’s... it’s a setup! That video is an AI deepfake! Nathan, you know how easy it is to generate fake videos nowadays! Your son is using technology to frame me because he hates me!”
“Is this a deepfake too?” Ethan pulled out the small plastic bag containing the silver safety pin and the torn piece of beige silicone he had found on the stairs. He threw it onto the middle of the table. “I found this right after you were arguing on the phone about your fake bump losing its shape. We can send this piece of silicone to a forensic lab right now to match the chemical composition of the adhesive to your skin cells.”
Vanessa’s lips parted, but no sound came out. The trap had closed in on her, tight and inescapable.
Nathan stood up slowly from his chair. For six weeks, he had been crushed under the weight of guilt, shame, and self-doubt. Now, seeing the irrefutable proof of the elaborate hoax, a wave of cold, powerful rage surged through him.
“You drugged me,” Nathan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper as he stepped toward Vanessa. “At the company gala... you put something in my water. You brought me to that hotel room, set up the scene, and walked out.”
“Nathan, no! You’re misinterpreting everything!” Vanessa cried, backing away toward the foyer. “I loved you! I’ve always loved you! Claire doesn't deserve you—she’s just a schoolteacher! I could have built an empire with you!”
“Get out,” Nathan commanded, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceilings of the mansion. “Get out of my house before I call the police and have you arrested for fraud, extortion, and drugging my drink.”
Vanessa looked at Margaret, desperate for support. “Margaret, please! Tell him!”
Margaret turned her head away, her face flushed with deep humiliation and shame. She couldn't even bring herself to look at Vanessa.
Realizing she had lost completely, Vanessa’s desperate expression hardened into a bitter, malicious sneer. She snatched her designer handbag off the hallway table. “You think you’ve won?” she spat, looking between Nathan and Claire. “You’re still ruined, Nathan. Your marriage is already dead. I made sure of that.”
With that, Vanessa turned on her high heels and stormed out of the front doors, slamming them behind her.
The dining room fell into a heavy, suffocating quiet. Nathan turned around to face Claire, his eyes filled with overwhelming relief and desperate hope. He took a step toward her, extending his hand. “Claire... oh God, Claire... I’m so sorry. I didn't betray you. I never touched her.”
Claire looked at Nathan’s outstretched hand. Then she looked at Ethan. Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn't take Nathan’s hand. Instead, she took a step back.
“I know you didn't sleep with her, Nathan,” Claire said softly, her voice cracking with emotion. “But the fact that you believed for six weeks that you were capable of doing that to us... the fact that you let your mother treat me like garbage in my own home... that doesn't just go away because of a video.”

Nathan froze, his heart shattering. “Claire, please...”
“I need time, Nathan,” Claire whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek. “Ethan, pack your bags. We’re going to stay at your aunt’s house in San Diego for a while.”
