Chapter 4 - The Man Who Ordered Her Father Silenced

Victor walked into the cellar as though arriving for dinner.
Luciano remained beside Mara.
Adrian closed the door behind them.
"You had my father killed," Luciano said.
Victor sighed.
"Antonio killed himself the moment he forgot what family means."
Mara felt Luciano tense.
"What does family mean to you?" she asked.
Victor looked amused.
"Not discussing private matters with waitresses."
Luciano stepped forward.
"Her father died because of you."
Victor's eyes shifted.
"Daniel Bennett was a bookkeeper who imagined numbers gave him authority."
"He had evidence."
"He had ambition."
Mara spoke.
"He had a daughter."
For the first time Victor looked directly at her.
"So did many men who interfered with business."
Luciano's expression changed.
Mara saw it.
Whatever small part of him had still hoped Daniel's recording was wrong disappeared.
Victor noticed too.
"Oh, don't look at me like that."
"You ordered it."
"I protected you."
"You killed my father."
"Your father was going to hand the organization to prosecutors."
"Then he should have."
Victor laughed.
Luciano didn't.
Victor moved closer.
"You think those restaurants came from kindness? Those towers? Those charities? That suit on your back?"
Luciano looked at him.
"They came from fear."
"Exactly."
"And I'm finished with it."
Victor's smile faded.
"No, you're emotional."
"I'm clear."
Victor pointed toward Mara.
"Because of her?"
"Because of everything."
Adrian shifted near the door.
Mara watched him.
He had one hand inside his jacket.
Luciano noticed too.
"Don't," Luciano said.
Adrian's hand stopped.
Victor looked at the metal case.
"Give me the ledger."
"No."
"Luciano."
"No."
Victor's voice hardened.
"I buried your father's betrayal. I protected you when you were too young to understand what this family required. I built stability around you."
"You built a cage."
"I built your throne."
Luciano looked at the ledger.
"Then watch me break it."
Victor's face finally lost control.
He nodded once toward Adrian.
Adrian stepped forward.
Luciano's phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen.
Then smiled faintly.
Victor stopped.
"What?"
Luciano turned the phone.
A progress bar.
UPLOAD COMPLETE.
Victor's expression emptied.
Luciano had photographed every page while Mara read the recordings.
Copies had already gone to three attorneys, two investigative journalists, and a federal contact his father once trusted.
Victor lunged for the metal case.
Luciano blocked him.
Adrian moved.
Mara backed toward the wall.
Then Adrian did something unexpected.
He stepped between Victor and Luciano.
Victor stared.
"What are you doing?"
Adrian slowly removed his hand from his jacket.
Empty.
"I'm done."
Victor looked stunned.
Adrian turned to Mara.
"I followed you because Victor ordered me to."
Mara said nothing.
"I threatened you."
"Yes."
"I won't ask forgiveness."
"Good."
Adrian nodded.
Then looked at Luciano.
"But Daniel Bennett's death wasn't Marcus Vale."
Luciano froze.
Victor's face changed.
Adrian continued.
"Marcus arranged it."
He pointed at Victor.
"He gave the order."
Mara whispered, "And who carried it out?"
Adrian looked toward the floor.
"Someone who's still alive."
Luciano's voice sharpened.
"Who?"
Adrian looked at Mara.
"Your father's business partner."
Mara went cold.
"My father didn't have a business partner."
"Not officially."
Adrian named him.
"Elias Grant."
Mara staggered.
Uncle Elias.
Not blood.
But close enough that Mara had called him uncle since childhood.
Elias had spoken at Daniel's funeral.
Held Mara's mother while she cried.
Paid part of Mara's college tuition.
Visited every Christmas.
"No."
Adrian looked ashamed.
"He was paid."
Mara shook her head.
"No."
Victor smiled.
"People are cheaper than you think."
Luciano moved toward him.
Mara grabbed Luciano's sleeve.
"Don't."
He stopped.
She looked at Victor.
"If you hurt him now, he becomes a victim."
Luciano breathed slowly.
Then nodded.
Victor sneered.
"She already controls you."
"No," Luciano said. "She reminded me who I don't want to be."
Sirens sounded faintly outside.
Victor turned toward the cellar door.
Luciano had also sent the evidence to law enforcement.
Victor stared at him.
"You called them here?"
"I called everyone."
"You'll destroy yourself."
"I know."
"Everything your father built."
"My father tried to destroy it first."
Victor's jaw tightened.
Adrian opened the cellar door.
Two of Luciano's security men stood outside.
Not Victor's men.
Luciano looked at them.
"Nobody leaves."
Victor's face twisted.
"You think they'll choose you?"
One guard answered.
"We already did."
Minutes later police entered the hotel.
Victor was escorted upstairs.
Adrian agreed to cooperate.
Luciano handed over the ledger himself.
Mara stood in the lobby beneath a chandelier while reporters gathered outside.
Luciano approached.
"You should go somewhere safe."
"I need to find Elias."
"Police will."
"I need to hear him admit it."
Luciano shook his head.
"No."
Mara's eyes hardened.
"You don't get to decide."
"He's dangerous."
"So are you."
Luciano accepted that.
Then said, "I'll come."
They reached Elias Grant's suburban house before dawn.
The porch light was on.
The front door stood open.
Luciano went first.
The living room was empty.
A cup of coffee steamed on the table.
Mara spotted a photograph of herself at age eight.
Elias had kept it framed.
Her stomach turned.
"He's here."
Luciano heard movement upstairs.
They climbed.
A bedroom door was open.
Inside, Elias sat on the edge of the bed.
A suitcase beside him.
He looked older than Mara remembered.
Tired.
Broken.
"Mara."
She stopped in the doorway.
"Did you kill my father?"
Elias closed his eyes.
Luciano stood behind her.
Elias whispered, "I drove the car."
Mara's face went white.
"What car?"
"The one that followed Daniel."
"Did you kill him?"
Elias looked at her.
"No."
"Then who did?"
Elias began crying.
Mara had never seen him cry.
"I brought him to the warehouse."
"Why?"
"They had my son."
Mara stared.
Elias's son had died years earlier from an overdose.
Victor had controlled his debts.
Threatened him.
Used him.
Elias had delivered Daniel.
Marcus Vale had done the rest.
Mara's voice shook.
"You gave my father to them."
"Yes."
"And then you stood beside me at his funeral."
Elias covered his face.
"Yes."
Luciano looked away.
Mara stepped closer.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was a coward."
She thought of her father's note.
I was terrified.
I simply loved her more than I feared them.
Mara looked at Elias.
Her father had faced the same fear.
He had chosen differently.
Sirens approached.
Luciano had alerted police before entering.
Elias looked toward the window.
"I kept something."
Mara stopped.
"What?"
He opened the suitcase.
Inside were cassette tapes.
Photographs.
And one sealed document.
"Daniel gave this to me before they took him inside."
Mara reached for it.
Elias held it tightly.
"He told me to give it to Luciano only if Victor was exposed."
Luciano stepped forward.
Elias released it.
Luciano opened the document.
His face changed.
Mara watched.
"What is it?"
Luciano read the first line again.
Then the second.
He slowly looked at her.
"My father wasn't killed because he wanted out."
Mara frowned.
Luciano held up the page.
"He was killed because he had already signed the entire empire over to someone else."
Mara stared.
"Who?"
May you like
Luciano turned the page.
And saw Mara Bennett's name.
