Chapter 5 - Marcus Osei’s Quiet War

By sunrise, Wren understood something she had not fully accepted before.

The war had already started.

It had not started when Odalys entered the hospital room.

It had not started when Silas sent his first message.

It had started months earlier.

Back when the financial reports stopped making sense.

Back when Silas stopped asking for her opinion and started informing her of decisions.

Back when the company she helped create slowly became a place where she felt like a stranger.

Wren sat in the hospital bed watching the morning light spread across the city.

The storm had disappeared.

But the damage it left behind remained.

Her father sat in the chair beside the window, reading documents on a tablet.

He had been awake most of the night.

Not because he was unable to sleep.

Because Marcus Osei did not sleep when there was a problem he needed to understand.

He studied.

He calculated.

He waited.

That was how he had always operated.

When Wren was a child, she used to think her father was too calm.

Other parents yelled when things went wrong.

Marcus became quieter.

Other people rushed into action.

Marcus gathered information.

Only later did she understand why.

A person who reacts emotionally gives away control.

A person who thinks first decides the direction of the battle.

"Dad."

Marcus looked up.

"How are you feeling?"

"Better."

He studied her expression.

"You are lying."

Wren smiled slightly.

"You always knew."

"I am your father."

He placed the tablet down.

"And you have always thought you could hide pain by becoming more focused."

Wren looked away.

She hated that he was right.

"I keep thinking about how long I ignored it."

Marcus frowned.

"Ignored what?"

"Silas changing."

The room became quiet.

Wren looked at her hands.

"I saw the signs."

Marcus did not interrupt.

"I just didn't want to believe them."

There was no anger in his face.

Only understanding.

"Love makes people patient."

Wren looked at him.

"But sometimes people confuse patience with permission."

That sentence stayed with her.

Because it was true.

She had given Silas years.

She had defended him.

She had protected his reputation.

And somewhere along the way, he had mistaken her loyalty for weakness.

Marcus picked up the tablet again.

"I reviewed the information you sent me."

Wren immediately became alert.

"What did you find?"

He turned the screen toward her.

Several company documents appeared.

Financial transfers.

Internal approvals.

Corporate structures.

Names she recognized.

Names she did not.

"These accounts are connected to Kade Capital."

Wren looked closer.

"I know that name."

"Odalys mentioned it?"

Wren nodded.

"She said I was trying to destroy Silas because I requested the audited accounts."

Marcus's expression changed slightly.

"That was not random."

"No."

"She was repeating something Silas told her."

Wren felt a chill.

"So he used her."

"Possibly."

Marcus zoomed in on one document.

"But there is something more important."

Wren looked at the screen.

"What?"

"This."

A transaction appeared.

A large transfer between Vance Dynamics and an outside investment group.

Wren stared.

"This approval signature..."

She stopped.

Because she recognized it.

Silas.

But there was something else.

A second authorization.

Her name.

"No."

Marcus watched her carefully.

"Are you certain?"

"I never approved this."

Her voice became quieter.

"I never saw this document."

Marcus nodded.

"Then someone used your authorization."

Wren felt anger replacing the fear.

Not because money was stolen.

Because her name had been used.

Her reputation.

Her work.

Everything she spent years building.

"They want to make it look like I was involved."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Marcus leaned back.

"Because if something goes wrong, who becomes the easiest person to blame?"

Wren answered immediately.

"The pregnant wife who is trying to take control of the company."

Marcus nodded.

"Exactly."

The realization was painful because it was logical.

Silas was not just removing her.

He was preparing a story.

A story where he was the victim.

A story where Wren was unstable.

A story where Odalys was the woman who helped him escape.

Wren looked toward the window.

"He planned everything."

Marcus did not answer.

But his silence confirmed it.

Later that morning, a representative from the hospital's security department arrived.

A woman named Elena Brooks.

She carried a small folder.

"Mrs. Vance, I apologize for disturbing you."

Wren sat straighter.

"What is it?"

Elena glanced at Marcus.

"Your father requested that we preserve all records from yesterday's incident."

Marcus nodded.

"Yes."

Elena opened the folder.

"We reviewed hallway cameras."

Wren held her breath.

"And?"

Elena looked uncomfortable.

"We found something unusual."

Marcus leaned forward.

"What?"

"The camera outside your room was disabled for seven minutes."

Wren felt cold.

"Disabled?"

"Yes."

"By who?"

"We are investigating."

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

"Someone accessed the system."

Elena nodded.

"That appears likely."

Wren looked at Marcus.

The connector.

The closed door.

The fake concern.

Someone had planned this.

Not just emotionally.

Technically.

Silas had access.

The company had access.

Someone had prepared the room.

"Can you recover the footage?"

Elena hesitated.

"Possibly."

"Do it."

Her voice surprised even herself.

She was no longer asking.

She was instructing.

Elena nodded.

"Of course."

After the security officer left, Marcus looked at his daughter.

"There she is."

Wren looked confused.

"Who?"

"The woman who built the company."

A small smile appeared on his face.

"For a moment, I thought they convinced you she was gone."

Wren looked down.

"I was scared."

"Good."

She looked up.

"Good?"

"Fear is not weakness."

Marcus stood.

"Fear means you understand what is at risk."

He walked toward the window.

"The dangerous people are not those who feel fear."

He turned back.

"They are the ones who feel nothing."

Across the city, inside the top floor office of Vance Dynamics, Silas Vance watched the same morning arrive.

But unlike Marcus, he was not calm because he understood.

He was calm because he believed he had won.

The office was exactly how he liked it.

Glass walls.

Minimal design.

A perfect view.

Everything represented success.

Everything except the person who had helped create it.

His assistant entered.

"Mr. Vance."

Silas looked up.

"Yes?"

"Odalys is here."

He nodded.

"Send her in."

A few moments later, Odalys entered.

But she was different from yesterday.

Less confident.

More careful.

Silas noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

Odalys closed the door.

"Your wife knows."

Silas's expression remained unchanged.

"Knows what?"

"Everything."

That finally caught his attention.

"What exactly did you tell her?"

"I didn't tell her anything."

Silas stood.

"Then what happened?"

Odalys looked frustrated.

"She recognized the connector."

A pause.

Silas stared.

"How?"

"Because she designed the system."

Silas looked away.

For the first time, a problem appeared.

Not a mistake.

A complication.

"Wren is smarter than you think," Odalys said.

Silas looked back.

"No."

His voice became colder.

"Wren is emotional."

Odalys did not respond.

Because she remembered the woman in the hospital bed.

She remembered the calm eyes.

The refusal.

The confidence.

Silas walked toward his desk.

"What about the agreement?"

"She refused."

"I expected that."

Odalys frowned.

"Then why send me?"

Silas looked at her.

"Because I needed to know if she was still predictable."

"And?"

Silas was silent.

The answer bothered him.

"No."

He looked out over the city.

"She isn't."

For the first time, Silas Vance felt something he had not expected.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

Because he finally understood the person he was fighting against.

Wren was not just his wife.

She was the architect of everything he owned.

And now she had stopped protecting him.

Meanwhile, in the hospital room, Marcus Osei received a message.

The recovered security footage was ready.

He opened it.

Seven minutes.

Seven missing minutes.

And then the image appeared.

A figure entering the restricted hallway.

Marcus watched carefully.

Wren looked over his shoulder.

Then both of them froze.

Because the person on the screen was not Odalys.

It was someone they never expected.

Someone who changed everything.

Silas Vance had not been trying to hide his mistress's actions.

He had been inside the hospital that night.

Watching.

Planning.

Waiting.

Marcus slowly closed the file.

His expression remained calm.

Too calm.

Wren looked at him.

"Dad?"

Marcus looked at his daughter.

"The war just became much simpler."

"Why?"

"Because now we know exactly who we are fighting."

He picked up his coat.

"And people who betray their own family usually make one mistake."

Wren waited.

"They forget their family knows them better than anyone else."

Outside the hospital window, the city continued moving.

But somewhere inside Vance Dynamics, an empire had just received its first warning.

May you like

And Marcus Osei was no longer investigating.

He was preparing.
