Chapter 8 - The Ledger Hidden in the Shadows

The message remained on my phone.

The boy knows where the ledger is.

I read it again.

Then again.

Not because I didn't understand the words.

Because I understood them too well.

The ledger.

The one thing everyone had been searching for.

The reason Daniel had spent years digging into my organization.

The reason Victor had betrayed me.

The reason my wife had died.

And somehow...

Marcus had become the key to finding it.

I looked across the room.

Marcus was sitting with Eva near the fireplace.

She was showing him one of her drawings.

Something she rarely did with anyone.

A week ago, this boy was a stranger.

A boy my guards considered an intruder.

A boy I almost believed was a threat.

Now he was the only person my daughter trusted completely.

And he was carrying a secret powerful enough to start a war.

I walked toward them.

Marcus immediately noticed my expression.

"What happened?"

I held up my phone.

"Someone knows about the ledger."

His face changed.

Not surprise.

Fear.

Real fear.

"You know what it is?"

I nodded.

"Do you?"

Marcus looked down.

Eva noticed.

She reached for his hand.

That small gesture told me everything.

Marcus wasn't afraid of the ledger.

He was afraid of what would happen if people found out he had it.

"Daniel told me not to talk about it," Marcus said quietly.

"Why?"

"Because people would come after me."

I sat across from him.

"They already have."

Marcus looked toward the window.

"The man who killed my brother?"

The room became silent.

I studied him.

"You believe Daniel was killed?"

Marcus nodded.

"He told me if anything happened to him, it wasn't an accident."

My jaw tightened.

Another person who knew the truth.

Another person who disappeared.

"Where is the ledger?"

Marcus hesitated.

I didn't push immediately.

Because I understood something now.

Marcus had spent his entire life being hunted.

Every adult who asked him questions probably wanted something from him.

I needed him to know I was different.

"Marcus."

He looked at me.

"I don't need the ledger because of my organization."

His eyes met mine.

"I need it because your brother died trying to protect people."

A long silence followed.

Then Marcus reached into his backpack.

He removed a small, worn notebook.

Not a ledger.

A map.

Old.

Folded many times.

"I don't have the ledger."

I looked at the paper.

"Then what is this?"

"Where Daniel hid it."

The map led to a place I knew well.

The old Whitmore family property.

The house where Daniel and I grew up.

The house I abandoned after my father's death.

I hadn't been there in years.

Too many memories.

Too many regrets.

Daniel and I were once inseparable.

Before power.

Before money.

Before my empire became more important than my family.

We were just two brothers running through those halls.

Dreaming about the future.

He wanted to build something honest.

I wanted to build something powerful.

Somewhere along the way...

we both lost ourselves.

Now I was returning because my dead brother had left me one final mission.

We arrived after midnight.

No guards.

No organization.

Only me, Marcus, Eva, and Cole.

I refused to involve anyone else.

Not after Victor.

Not after learning how deep the betrayal went.

The old house stood in the darkness.

Broken windows.

Overgrown gardens.

A forgotten place.

But Daniel had always loved this house.

He believed memories were important.

"Where is it?" Cole asked.

Marcus looked around.

"He didn't tell me."

"Then why bring us here?"

Marcus pointed toward the front door.

"Because he said you would know."

I stared at the house.

A strange feeling moved through me.

Because Daniel knew me better than anyone.

He knew I would understand.

I entered slowly.

The air smelled old.

Dust.

Wood.

Memories.

Eva held my hand.

I looked down.

"You okay?"

She nodded.

"I remember."

My heart stopped.

"What do you remember?"

She looked around.

"Mommy came here."

I froze.

"What?"

Eva touched the wall.

"Before the accident."

Cole and Marcus looked at her.

"What did she do here?" I asked.

Eva closed her eyes.

"She talked to Uncle Daniel."

The room became silent.

My wife and Daniel.

Together.

The night before she died.

I had never known.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

Eva's eyes filled with tears.

"I forgot."

Then she whispered:

"Until Marcus came."

That sentence hurt.

Because it meant Marcus hadn't just helped her speak.

He had helped her remember.

We searched the house.

Nothing.

No documents.

No boxes.

No hidden rooms.

Hours passed.

Then Marcus stopped.

"Wait."

Everyone turned.

He walked toward an old bookshelf.

He touched one of the books.

A childhood book Daniel and I used to read.

He pulled it.

Nothing happened.

Then he smiled slightly.

"He said you would know."

I stepped forward.

I looked at the bookshelf.

At the books.

At the room.

Then I remembered.

When we were children, Daniel and I had a secret hiding place.

A place only we knew.

Behind the fireplace.

I moved toward it.

Cole watched.

"You know something?"

I nodded.

"Something I forgot."

I pushed against the stone.

Nothing.

Then another.

A small click.

The wall moved.

Behind it was a hidden compartment.

Inside was a black metal box.

My hands became still.

Because I knew what this was.

Daniel's final secret.

I opened it.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

And a small leather ledger.

The ledger.

The thing that could destroy Victor.

The thing that could expose everyone involved.

I picked it up.

Then I saw something underneath.

A letter.

My name was written on it.

For my brother.

My hands shook.

I opened it.

The first line destroyed me.

If you found this, then Marcus succeeded where I failed.

I continued reading.

I couldn't save our family.

But maybe you can.

I looked at Marcus.

Then Eva.

Then back at the letter.

The next words changed everything.

Victor was never working alone.

My eyes moved down.

There was another name.

A name I never expected.

A name that made Cole step back.

Because even he knew the danger.

The letter ended with one warning:

The person controlling Victor has been beside you longer than you realize.

I slowly looked at the ledger.

Then toward the dark hallway behind us.

Because suddenly I understood.

Victor was not the mastermind.

He was only a piece.

A soldier.

Someone else had been moving everything from the shadows.

And whoever that person was...

they had been watching my family for years.

Then the lights inside the old house turned on.

Every single one.

A voice came from the hallway.

"Congratulations."

We turned.

A man stepped from the darkness.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who should never have been there.

He smiled.

The same smile Eva feared.

The same smile my daughter remembered.

May you like

And he said:

"You finally found what Daniel died protecting."
