Chapter 3 - The Secret Hidden Behind The Little Girl’s Silence

The first thing Adrian Romano did after leaving Bellamy’s Bakery was not call his security team.

It was not call his lawyers.

It was not call the people who handled problems before they became disasters.

The first thing he did was hold his daughter’s hand.

Lily sat quietly in the back seat of the black SUV, her small fingers wrapped around Adrian’s.

For ten minutes, neither of them moved.

The city passed outside the tinted windows.

Rain blurred the skyscrapers into shadows.

Cars moved slowly through the wet streets.

People walked beneath umbrellas, completely unaware that inside one of those vehicles sat one of the most feared men in New York and the only person who could make him feel powerless.

His daughter.

Adrian stared at Lily.

She stared back.

Usually, this was the moment where he failed.

The moment where he searched for the right words.

The moment where he wished he could understand what she was thinking without needing someone else to translate.

He hated that feeling.

Adrian Romano could read people.

He could tell when someone was lying before they finished their sentence.

He could walk into a room and know who was afraid, who was dangerous, and who was pretending.

But with Lily…

He was always ten steps behind.

Because the world had taught him how to fight enemies.

Nobody had taught him how to listen to his own child.

Across from him, Emma Brooks sat quietly.

She had refused to leave Lily alone.

Not because she was fearless.

She wasn’t.

Anyone who said they were fearless was usually lying.

Emma understood exactly who Adrian Romano was.

She had seen the way people reacted when he entered the bakery.

The silence.

The lowered eyes.

The fear.

But she had also seen something else.

The way his hands shook slightly when Lily looked scared.

The way his voice softened when he said her name.

The way he looked at his daughter like she was the only thing in the world he couldn’t afford to lose.

That was why Emma stayed.

Not because he was powerful.

Because Lily needed someone.

The SUV stopped in front of a massive private residence overlooking the city.

The Romano estate was not a home in the ordinary sense.

It was a fortress.

Tall iron gates.

Security cameras hidden everywhere.

Guards positioned around the property.

A place designed to keep enemies out.

But as Adrian stepped out of the vehicle with Lily beside him, one thought kept repeating in his mind.

Someone had already gotten close.

Too close.

Inside the house, everything moved immediately.

Security teams entered.

Phones rang.

Computer screens lit up.

Men in suits whispered in corners.

Adrian ignored all of it.

He walked Lily upstairs himself.

Emma followed.

A woman from the household approached.

“Mr. Romano, should I prepare—”

“No.”

His voice stopped her instantly.

Everyone knew Adrian’s voice.

Cold.

Controlled.

Final.

But tonight, it was different.

“Bring tea for Lily.”

The woman nodded.

“And for Ms. Brooks.”

Emma looked surprised.

“You don’t have to—”

“I know.”

Adrian looked at her.

“That’s why I’m asking.”

It was the first polite sentence anyone in the room had heard from him all night.

Emma noticed.

So did everyone else.

Adrian Romano was not a man who thanked people.

He was not a man who admitted he needed help.

But tonight, he was doing both without saying the words.

Lily’s bedroom was large but surprisingly simple.

No expensive decorations.

No unnecessary luxury.

Just books.

Stuffed animals.

Drawings.

A small keyboard near the window.

The room of a child.

Not the room of a mafia boss’s daughter.

Lily sat on the bed.

Emma sat beside her.

Adrian stood nearby.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emma raised her hands.

“What happened tonight?”

Lily looked at her father.

Then at Emma.

She hesitated.

Emma noticed.

“She’s afraid.”

Adrian immediately stepped forward.

“Of what?”

Emma looked at him.

“Not you.”

That answer surprised him.

“Then who?”

Lily began signing.

This time slower.

She wanted them to understand.

Emma translated carefully.

“She says she saw something two weeks ago.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“What?”

Lily pointed toward the hallway.

Then made a sign for "man."

Emma watched.

“She saw someone inside the house.”

The room became silent.

Adrian looked toward the door.

“Impossible.”

Emma didn’t react.

She had learned something about powerful people.

They often confused impossible with unlikely.

“Lily believes it happened.”

Adrian looked back at his daughter.

And that was enough.

Because he knew Lily.

She was not dramatic.

She was not someone who invented stories.

If she said she saw someone…

Then someone was there.

“Who knew?”

Emma asked.

Adrian looked at her.

“What?”

“Who knew she saw him?”

Nobody answered.

Because suddenly everyone understood the problem.

Someone inside the security circle.

Someone trusted.

Someone who had access.

A person close enough to watch Lily.

Close enough to silence anyone who asked questions.

Adrian walked toward the window.

The city stretched beneath him.

Millions of people.

Millions of possibilities.

But the enemy was not somewhere outside.

The enemy was inside his walls.

His phone rang.

He answered.

“Talk.”

A security officer spoke quickly.

Adrian listened.

His expression changed.

Emma noticed.

Something had happened.

“What is it?”

He ended the call.

“Security footage from tonight is missing.”

Emma felt cold.

“Missing?”

Adrian nodded.

“Three cameras went offline.”

“When?”

“Twenty minutes before Lily disappeared from the restaurant.”

The room went quiet.

Lily immediately reached for Emma’s hand.

Emma looked down.

The girl was signing again.

Fast.

Urgent.

Emma followed.

Then she looked at Adrian.

“She says there’s more.”

Adrian came closer.

“What?”

Emma looked at Lily.

“Ask her what she remembers.”

Adrian knelt in front of his daughter.

It was a strange sight.

A man feared by thousands.

A man whose name could stop conversations.

Sitting on the floor in front of a seven-year-old girl.

Waiting.

Listening.

Lily took a deep breath.

Then she signed.

Emma translated.

“She says the man who watched her…”

Emma stopped.

Her expression changed.

Adrian noticed immediately.

“What?”

Emma looked at him.

“She says he knew sign language.”

Adrian froze.

The room seemed to become smaller.

Because that changed everything.

The person watching Lily wasn’t just someone who accidentally noticed her.

He understood her.

He knew how she communicated.

He knew how to hide from everyone else.

He knew how to make sure nobody understood what she was saying.

Emma looked at Lily.

The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.

“She says he told her nobody would believe her.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

For the first time that night, his calm disappeared.

Not because someone threatened him.

Not because someone challenged his power.

Because someone had frightened his daughter.

Someone had used her silence against her.

Emma watched him carefully.

She expected anger.

Violence.

A dangerous reaction.

Instead, Adrian walked to Lily.

He gently touched her hair.

And signed.

Slowly.

Carefully.

His signs were imperfect.

But his meaning was clear.

"I believe you."

Lily stared at him.

Then tears rolled down her face.

Not because she was scared.

Because she had been waiting to hear those words.

Adrian looked away for a moment.

Emma noticed something.

Regret.

Deep regret.

The kind that came from realizing you had protected someone from the world but failed to protect them from loneliness.

“I should have known,” Adrian whispered.

Emma shook her head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“She needed someone to listen.”

Emma glanced at Lily.

“She found someone.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Adrian’s phone rang again.

This time, the voice on the other end was different.

Urgent.

“Boss…”

Adrian immediately recognized the fear in his employee’s voice.

“What happened?”

A pause.

Then:

“We found something.”

Adrian stood.

“What?”

“The person who accessed the cameras…”

Another pause.

“He left a message.”

Adrian’s expression darkened.

“What message?”

The security officer swallowed.

“Only three words.”

The room waited.

Adrian looked toward Lily.

Then toward Emma.

The officer finally spoke.

“Keep her quiet.”

The call ended.

And for the first time in years…

Adrian Romano felt something he rarely allowed himself to feel.

Fear.

Not for his empire.

Not for his money.

Not for his life.

For his daughter.

Because someone had spent weeks watching Lily.

Someone who understood her silence.

Someone who knew exactly how to hurt her.

And now that person knew something else.

May you like

Lily had finally found a voice.

And that voice was Emma Brooks.
