Chapter 6 - The Truth Behind Daniel Carter

The photograph on my phone changed everything.
Daniel's father.
Standing outside the storage unit.
Watching me.
For several seconds, I couldn't move.
My mind kept searching for a reasonable explanation.
Maybe it was old.
Maybe it was someone else.
Maybe I was seeing what I wanted to see.
But the timestamp on the image destroyed every possibility.
It was taken minutes ago.
Someone had been outside.
Someone knew I was there.
I looked toward the storage unit entrance.
The hallway was empty.
Too empty.
I grabbed the black recording device from the table and placed it inside my jacket.
Then I took every document I could carry.
I didn't know who to trust anymore.
Not Margaret.
Not Daniel.
Not even the memories I had spent my entire life believing.
I walked out of the storage building without looking back.
The moment I reached my car, my phone rang.
Daniel.
I stared at his name.
A week ago, seeing his name would have made me smile.
Now it only made my stomach tighten.
I answered.
"What do you want?"
His voice was urgent.
"Emily, where are you?"
"Why?"
"Because my father knows you found the storage unit."
I gripped the steering wheel.
"You knew he was involved."
"No."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"I didn't know."
I closed my eyes.
Again.
That sentence.
I didn't know.
The same words.
The same excuse.
"Daniel, your entire family has been hiding things from me."
"I know."
"Your mother knew my mother."
"I know."
"Your father was connected to whatever happened."
"I know."
I stopped.
"Wait."
Silence.
"You know?"
Daniel breathed heavily.
"Emily..."
"No. You just said you know."
"I found out today."
"Then tell me."
He didn't answer immediately.
And I knew.
There was something worse.
"What did you find?"
His voice became quieter.
"My father didn't just know your mother."
I waited.
"He worked with her."
I felt the air leave my lungs.
"What?"
"My father was part of the operation mentioned in those documents."
I looked at the folder beside me.
The military reports.
The hidden records.
The secrets my mother had buried.
"What operation?"
"I don't know everything."
I almost ended the call.
But then he continued.
"It was called Guardian Shield."
I froze.
"The same operation?"
"Yes."
"Daniel, why was my mother involved?"
"I don't know."
I hit the steering wheel.
"Stop saying that."
"Emily, listen to me."
"No. You listen."
My voice shook.
"I spent years believing my mother abandoned me. I spent years thinking she didn't love me enough to stay. Then I find out she was protecting me from something connected to your family."
"I know."
"And you want me to trust you?"
"I don't."
That answer surprised me.
"What?"
"I don't expect you to trust me."
For the first time, Daniel sounded honest.
"I failed you."
The words were simple.
But they mattered.
Because they were the first time he admitted it without excuses.
"I was scared of my mother."
I said nothing.
"I grew up watching her control everyone around her. My father included."
"Then why defend her?"
"Because I thought I could fix things."
He paused.
"I thought if I stayed quiet, I could keep everyone together."
I looked at the bruises still healing on my body.
"Silence didn't keep anyone together."
"I know."
Another pause.
"Emily, my father is looking for you."
"Why?"
"Because he knows what your mother left behind."
I looked at the black recording device.
"Do you know what's on this?"
"No."
"My mother recorded a message."
Daniel became silent.
"What did she say?"
I hesitated.
Then I answered.
"She said I needed to know the truth about you."
The silence on the other end was immediate.
"Daniel?"
When he finally spoke, his voice was different.
"What exactly did she say?"
"That's all."
"No."
"What?"
"Emily, my mother never feared anyone."
I listened.
"But my father..."
He stopped.
"Your father what?"
Daniel swallowed.
"My father was the only person who could make my mother afraid."
I looked out the window.
The world suddenly felt much bigger.
And much more dangerous.
"Where is your father now?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"Daniel."
"He was supposed to be retired."
"That wasn't my question."
A long pause.
Then:
"He disappeared."
I felt my hands go cold.
"When?"
"The day after you left the house."
I looked at the photograph again.
The one showing him outside the storage unit.
"That's impossible."
"I know."
"Because he's not gone."
Daniel went silent.
"What?"
I turned the phone toward the picture.
"I have proof."
I sent it.
Seconds passed.
Then my phone rang again.
Daniel.
I answered.
"Emily..."
His voice was barely recognizable.
"What?"
"My father isn't alone."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"The person standing next to him."
I looked at the photo.
At first, I hadn't noticed.
The image was blurry.
But behind Daniel's father, near the edge of the frame, there was another figure.
Someone partially hidden.
Someone watching.
"Who is that?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Because he knew.
And this time, he wasn't afraid to admit it.
"Emily..."
His voice cracked.
"That's the person my mother spent her entire life trying to stop."
I stared at the picture.
"Who?"
Before Daniel could respond, another notification appeared on my phone.
A new message.
Unknown number.
One sentence.
"Your mother told you the truth about everyone except one person."
I stared at the screen.
Then a second message appeared.
A photograph.
Not of Daniel's father.
Not of Margaret.
Not of my mother.
It was a picture of me.
Taken inside my own house.
Yesterday.
My breathing stopped.
Someone had been watching me.
The third message arrived.
"You still don't know who helped your mother disappear."
Then the final message appeared.
A name.
May you like
The name of the person who had been beside my mother all those years ago.
And it was the one person I never expected.
