Chapter 4 - The Mother Who Never Died

Isabella Bellini looked older.

Thinner.

Her hair was shorter and threaded with silver.

But Elena knew her mother’s eyes.

She ran.

Three years of grief collapsed in seconds.

Elena reached Isabella and stopped inches away, suddenly afraid touching her would make her disappear.

Isabella solved it.

She wrapped her arms around her daughter.

Elena broke.

No elegance.

No restraint.

She sobbed against her mother’s shoulder.

“You were alive.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You were alive.”

“I know.”

Giancarlo stood frozen.

Isabella looked at him.

Whatever passed between them contained decades.

Love.

Betrayal.

Anger.

Fear.

Giancarlo whispered, “Isabella.”

“Not yet.”

He stopped.

Dante appeared at the opposite end of the corridor.

Elena pulled away.

“You knew.”

“No.”

“You were with her.”

“I found her forty minutes ago.”

Isabella nodded.

“He did.”

Elena wiped her face.

“Where have you been?”

“Hiding.”

“From Vescari?”

Isabella’s expression sharpened.

“Who told you that name?”

“Papa.”

She looked toward Giancarlo.

“He finally admitted something useful.”

Giancarlo ignored the insult.

“Is Carlo behind this?”

Isabella’s face became grim.

“Carlo is part of it.”

“Who else?”

She looked at Dante.

“Your father discovered the answer.”

Dante went still.

“My father died eight years ago.”

“Yes.”

“In an accident.”

“No.”

Dante’s expression did not change.

But Elena saw his hand tighten.

Isabella continued.

“Vittorio found evidence that someone was laundering money through Bellini and Romano companies. Giancarlo participated at first.”

Elena looked at her father.

Giancarlo did not deny it.

“But eventually,” Isabella said, “Giancarlo realized the network had become too dangerous to leave.”

“You're defending him?” Elena asked.

“No. I’m explaining him. There is a difference.”

Giancarlo looked wounded.

Isabella continued.

“Vittorio wanted to expose everything. I agreed. We gathered evidence.”

“The black ledger,” Dante said.

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Isabella hesitated.

“Safe.”

Dante stared.

“Where?”

“Not with me.”

Giancarlo laughed bitterly.

“You haven't changed.”

Isabella looked at him.

“Neither have you. That's why our daughter spent her wedding night being humiliated.”

Giancarlo lowered his eyes.

Elena felt something shift.

Her father’s cruelty remained unforgivable.

But now she could see its architecture.

Fear had built it.

Cowardice maintained it.

That did not excuse him.

It made him smaller.

Dante asked, “Who killed my father?”

Isabella looked at him.

“Carlo gave the order.”

Dante’s jaw hardened.

“But he didn't make the decision.”

“Who did?”

Before Isabella could answer, Marco entered.

“We have a problem.”

He showed Dante his phone.

A video had been sent to every major newspaper in Sicily.

Giancarlo Bellini appeared on screen moving money through shell companies.

Headlines were already spreading.

BELLINI FINANCIAL EMPIRE LINKED TO ORGANIZED CRIME.

Elena stared at her father.

Giancarlo looked almost relieved.

“They're burning me.”

“Why now?” Dante asked.

Isabella answered.

“Because Elena stayed married.”

Everyone turned.

“The marriage consolidated disclosure rights,” she said. “Once the marriage became official, the old agreement activated. Certain accounts can now be legally audited.”

Dante understood.

“So they're destroying Giancarlo before we reach the records.”

“Yes.”

“And the rumors about Elena?”

Isabella’s eyes filled with anger.

“Giancarlo's idea.”

Elena flinched.

Her mother looked at her.

“He believed if he made you undesirable, he could control who eventually married you.”

Giancarlo spoke.

“I had no choice.”

“You had thousands,” Isabella said. “You chose the one that hurt her.”

Silence.

Giancarlo sat down.

For once, he had no defense.

Elena looked at him.

“I spent years thinking something was wrong with me.”

He closed his eyes.

“I know.”

“No. You don't.”

“Elena—”

“I believed every man who walked away had discovered something shameful about me.”

Giancarlo’s face crumpled.

“I thought shame would keep you alive.”

“And you never wondered what kind of life that would leave me?”

He had no answer.

Dante stood beside Elena.

Not touching.

Simply there.

She reached for his hand.

It surprised him.

Then he closed his fingers around hers.

Isabella saw it.

A faint smile touched her face.

“You chose better than we did.”

Elena almost laughed through tears.

“I didn't choose him.”

“Maybe not at first.”

Dante looked away.

Isabella returned to business.

“The ledger contains names, accounts, dates, payments, everything.”

“Where?” Dante asked again.

“With Luca.”

Elena’s head snapped up.

“My brother?”

“Yes.”

Giancarlo stood.

“You gave it to Luca?”

“He found me six months ago.”

Elena stared.

Luca had known their mother was alive.

“Where is he?”

Nobody answered.

Elena pulled out her phone.

She called.

Voicemail.

Again.

Nothing.

Dante called Marco.

“Find Luca.”

Ten minutes later, they located his car.

Abandoned near the marina.

Blood on the driver’s door.

Elena went cold.

Dante immediately organized men.

Isabella grabbed Elena’s hands.

“Listen to me. Luca knew this could happen.”

“You used him.”

“No.”

“You gave him the ledger!”

“He asked for it.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted to fix what your father did to you.”

Elena stared.

Isabella explained.

Luca had discovered Giancarlo’s plan for the marriage.

He tried to sabotage it.

The handwritten champagne card had been his.

MAKE ROMANO REJECT HER.

But Luca’s intention had not been to humiliate Elena.

He wanted Dante to see proof that the rejection was being engineered.

“He thought Dante would investigate,” Isabella said.

Dante nodded slowly.

“He was right.”

Elena felt tears again.

Her brother had been trying to help.

“Where would he take the ledger?”

Isabella hesitated.

“There’s one place.”

An abandoned chapel outside Palermo.

They drove there immediately.

The doors were open.

Inside, candles burned.

Luca sat in the front pew.

Alive.

Elena ran to him.

He hugged her.

“I’m sorry.”

She held him tighter.

“Where’s the ledger?”

Luca looked toward Dante.

“I hid it.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere Vescari can't reach.”

A sound came from behind the altar.

Dante moved in front of Elena.

Marco reached inside his jacket.

A man stepped out.

Carlo Vescari.

Elegant.

Calm.

Unarmed.

He smiled at Isabella.

“You've made this unnecessarily difficult.”

Dante stepped forward.

“You killed my father.”

Carlo sighed.

“Your father was warned.”

“By whom?”

Carlo smiled.

“That is what Isabella still hasn't told you.”

Dante glanced at her.

Isabella looked terrified.

Carlo continued.

“Because the person who ordered Vittorio Romano’s death is still inside your family.”

Dante’s face hardened.

“Name.”

Carlo looked past him.

Toward Marco.

Then smiled.

The chapel doors slammed shut behind them.

A phone began ringing in Dante’s pocket.

May you like

The caller ID displayed two words.

SOFIA ROMANO.
