Chapter 4 - The Daughter Nobody Mentioned

The scream came from upstairs.
Not Evelyn.
Not Marcus.
A woman.
Daniel grabbed my arm.
I pulled away automatically.
"Who else is here?"
Evelyn looked terrified.
"No one."
Charles shouted toward the hallway.
"Security!"
Nothing.
The mansion remained dark.
Marcus turned on his phone flashlight.
Another scream.
Shorter.
Then silence.
Daniel ran.
I followed.
"Claire, stay downstairs."
"No."
He didn't argue.
We climbed the staircase together.
Marcus followed.
Charles stayed with Evelyn.
At the landing, a bedroom door stood open.
Light from Marcus's phone swept inside.
Empty.
Then I heard breathing.
Closet.
Daniel opened it.
A woman crouched on the floor.
Mid-forties.
Dark coat.
Blood on her palm from a cut.
She raised both hands.
"Don't."
Daniel stepped back.
"Who are you?"
The woman stared past him.
Toward Evelyn climbing the stairs.
Her expression changed.
"Evelyn."
Evelyn stopped.
"Rachel."
Daniel looked between them.
"You know her?"
Rachel stood slowly.
"I worked for your father."
Charles appeared behind Evelyn.
His face went white.
"You."
Rachel laughed bitterly.
"Surprised?"
"How did you get in here?"
"Same way I did twenty years ago."
Daniel stepped forward.
"Who are you?"
Rachel looked directly at him.
"I'm the nurse who documented what happened to Anna."
Silence.
Daniel whispered, "My sister."
Rachel nodded.
"You were nine."
He looked at Evelyn.
"I had a sister and nobody told me?"
Evelyn cried openly.
"We thought she would survive."
"That's not an answer."
Charles said, "Daniel—"
"Don't say my name."
Rachel pulled a small envelope from her coat.
"I came because the files are about to be released."
I looked at her.
"You sent the messages?"
"No."
"Then who did?"
"I came to warn Evelyn."
"About what?"
Rachel's eyes moved toward Charles.
"Someone is using Anna's case to blackmail this family."
Charles laughed without humor.
"You expect us to believe you're innocent?"
"I don't care what you believe."
She handed the envelope to Daniel.
Inside was a photograph.
A teenage girl with dark hair.
Standing beside a younger Charles.
And another man.
I recognized the second man.
Dr. Martin Keller.
My hospital's former chief executive.
Retired two years ago.
The same man whose signature appeared on several invoices I'd received accidentally.
My stomach dropped.
"This connects to my hospital."
Rachel nodded.
"That's why the files reached you."
I stared at her.
"It wasn't an accident."
"No."
"Who sent them?"
"I don't know."
"Someone wanted me involved."
"Yes."
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"What happened to Anna?"
Rachel sat on the edge of the bed.
"She had a rare autoimmune condition."
Charles interrupted.
"She was dying."
Rachel snapped, "She was sick."
"She had weeks."
"You didn't know that."
"I was her father."
The word landed hard.
His daughter.
Daniel's sister.
Rachel continued.
"Charles and Keller had developed an experimental therapy. Animal testing looked promising."
Evelyn whispered, "Charles said it might save her."
Rachel nodded.
"Anna agreed to treatment."
Daniel looked confused.
"Then what's the crime?"
Rachel looked at Charles.
"She agreed to one dose."
Charles said nothing.
Rachel's voice became quieter.
"After complications began, Anna withdrew consent."
I understood.
"But they continued."
Rachel nodded.
"Three more doses."
Evelyn sobbed.
Charles shouted, "Because stopping would have killed her!"
Rachel stood.
"It did kill her."
The room became silent.
Daniel looked at his father.
"You kept treating her after she said no?"
Charles's face twisted.
"You were a child. You don't understand."
"I understand the word no."
I watched Daniel absorb twenty years of family silence in seconds.
Rachel continued.
"After Anna died, Keller falsified portions of the record."
"And Philadelphia?" I asked.
"Same therapy. Modified version."
Daniel stared at Charles.
"You did it again."
Charles's voice weakened.
"It saved people."
"And killed others."
"It saved more."
"That's how you justified it?"
"It wasn't justification. It was reality."
Rachel pointed toward me.
"And when Claire discovered the financial trail, you drugged her."
Charles looked away.
Daniel's face changed.
For the first time, shame turned into fury.
"You used Anna to control Mom."
Charles stared at him.
"You used Philadelphia to control me."
No answer.
"You destroyed this family because you couldn't admit you were wrong."
Charles exploded.
"I tried to save my daughter!"
Daniel shouted back.
"And then you spent twenty years trying to save yourself!"
The words echoed down the hallway.
Evelyn covered her face.
Marcus leaned against the wall.
I stood among them thinking about every dinner where everyone had smiled.
Every toast.
Every polite conversation.
A family can hide a grave beneath a dining table and still serve dessert over it.
My phone buzzed.
Again.
Unknown number.
This time a video file.
I opened it.
Security footage.
Tonight.
The dining room.
Before dinner.
Someone entered carrying a small bottle.
They approached my wineglass.
Tilted the bottle.
Three drops.
I stared.
Daniel moved beside me.
"Who is it?"
The figure turned toward the camera.
Not Charles.
Not Marcus.
Not Daniel.
Evelyn.
Daniel whispered, "Mom?"
She stared at the video.
"No."
Her voice was barely audible.
"That isn't possible."
But the footage was clear.
She had drugged my drink.
I backed away from her.
"You?"
Evelyn shook her head violently.
"I didn't."
"It's you."
"No. Claire, listen to me."
"I watched you."
"That video is wrong."
Charles looked at her.
"Evelyn."
She turned on him.
"I did not put anything in Claire's glass."
Rachel studied the video.
"Pause it."
I did.
"Zoom in."
Daniel enlarged the image.
Rachel pointed.
"Look at the left hand."
A ring.
Emerald.
Evelyn wore one exactly like it.
But Rachel shook her head.
"Evelyn lost that ring seventeen years ago."
Charles froze.
Daniel looked at him.
"What?"
Rachel continued.
"After Anna's funeral."
Evelyn slowly turned toward Charles.
"I didn't lose it."
Her face became white.
"It was stolen."
Silence.
Marcus said, "By who?"
Evelyn whispered:
"Anna."
Daniel stared at her.
"What are you talking about?"
Evelyn walked toward a drawer in the hallway table.
She removed an old jewelry box.
Inside was an empty velvet slot.
"This ring disappeared the night Anna died."
I looked at the video again.
The woman had Evelyn's hair.
Evelyn's posture.
Almost Evelyn's face.
But the camera angle was poor.
Daniel whispered, "Are you saying Anna survived?"
Charles snapped, "Impossible."
Rachel didn't answer.
That frightened me.
"Rachel?"
She looked at Charles.
"You never saw Anna's body after she was taken from the hospital."
Charles went still.
Evelyn covered her mouth.
Daniel whispered, "No."
Rachel reached into her coat.
She pulled out a second photograph.
Recent.
A woman in her late thirties.
Dark hair.
Emerald ring.
Standing outside my hospital.
On the back were four handwritten words:
SHE KNOWS CLAIRE HAS IT.
Before I could ask what "it" meant, the downstairs security alarm began screaming.
Marcus checked the camera feed.
His face drained.
"Someone just entered the house."
Daniel looked at the screen.
A woman was standing in the foyer.
She looked exactly like the girl in Anna's old photograph.
May you like
Then she raised her face toward the camera.
And smiled.
