Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Locked Room

I found Lily standing beside the blue door: "Uncle, she said we had to come here." I pulled Lily into my arms. Then I saw Reena staring at the doorway. She whispered, "That's not my room."
The blue door wasn't inside Reena's house.
It was inside the storage facility.
Someone had built a replica.
A false room.
A trap.
Harper searched the walls.
"We're leaving."
But Lily shook her head.
"No."
I crouched beside her.
"Why?"
She pointed at the door.
"Daddy said."
"What did he say?"
"He said the door would show the truth."
Harper opened it.
Inside was a small room.
A chair.
A camera.
A table.
And dozens of photographs.
The children.
Aaron.
Reena.
Me.
Gordon.
Nathan.
Every person connected to the family.
I felt sick.
Someone had been watching us for years.
Harper found a monitor.
He turned it on.
Video footage appeared.
Reena was standing in the room.
But the timestamp was three years earlier.
She was crying.
Aaron stood beside her.
He was alive.
He was saying something.
The audio was low.
Harper adjusted it.
Aaron's voice became clear.
"You have to leave."
Reena answered:
"I can't."
"Then take the children and go."
"I don't know where."
"Anywhere."
Then another man entered the room.
Nathan.
He looked furious.
"You think you can walk away?"
Aaron stood between him and Reena.
"I know what you've been doing."
Nathan laughed.
"You know nothing."
Aaron pointed toward the camera.
"I have copies."
Nathan stopped.
Aaron had known.
The footage continued.
Gordon entered.
Nathan handed him a folder.
Gordon opened it.
Inside were trust documents.
They were planning to take control of the children's inheritance.
But Aaron had discovered them.
He had confronted them.
Then Reena appeared.
She looked terrified.
"I'll do what you want."
Aaron turned toward her.
"No."
She cried.
"I have no choice."
"You always have a choice."
The footage ended.
I looked at Reena.
"You helped them."
She nodded.
"I thought I was protecting the children."
"But you locked them in that room."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I was trying to keep them hidden."
"From who?"
She pointed toward the screen.
"Nathan."
Harper asked:
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because Nathan threatened to take them."
Then another video started automatically.
Nathan stood in front of the camera.
He looked directly into it.
"If you're watching this, Aaron failed."
The screen flickered.
Nathan continued.
"The money belongs to me."
Harper reached for his phone.
The video continued.
"But the children are the key."
I felt my blood run cold.
Nathan explained that Aaron's trust had been designed to release money at specific ages.
Drew's eighteenth birthday.
Lily's eighteenth birthday.
Nathan had spent years trying to gain control of the trust.
The locked room had been used to frighten the children into silence.
But Aaron had hidden evidence.
He had placed copies in the safe.
Then Nathan said something that changed everything.
"Reena never knew about the second account."
Reena looked stunned.
"What second account?"
Harper stared at the screen.
A bank account number appeared.
Then another.
The trust wasn't empty.
Millions remained untouched.
Aaron had protected it.
The money had never been lost.
Nathan had only controlled the paperwork.
Then the screen went black.
A final message appeared.
ACCOUNT ACCESS RESTORED.
Harper's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What?"
He listened.
Then looked at me.
"Nathan has been arrested."
I exhaled.
But Harper wasn't finished.
"Gordon too."
Reena began to cry.
The truth was finally coming out.
But there was one question left.
Who had sent the anonymous messages?
Harper checked the phone records.
The number belonged to a prepaid device.
But the location was nearby.
Very nearby.
He looked toward the hallway.
Then his phone buzzed again.
A message appeared.
YOU STILL DON'T KNOW WHY AARON DIED.
Harper looked at me.
I looked at Drew.
Drew was holding something in his hand.
A small key.
He whispered:
May you like
"Dad gave me this."
Then he pointed toward the last locked drawer in the room...
