Chapter 7 - Four Steps of Concrete

Ronaldo moved between Elsa and the door.

The woman raised both hands.

“I'm not here to hurt anyone.”

“Who are you?”

“Federal investigator.”

Ronaldo didn't move.

She produced identification.

Special Agent Claire Donovan.

Elsa recognized her.

“You.”

Claire nodded.

“You sent the ledger fragment.”

Ronaldo looked at Elsa.

She explained.

Before disappearing, Elsa had sent evidence outside Ronaldo's network.

Insurance.

If she died, someone would still know.

Claire had spent weeks tracing the shell companies.

“They weren't built to steal eight million,” Claire said.

“They were built to transfer control.”

“Control of what?”

“Your legitimate holdings.”

Ronaldo's businesses included shipping interests, warehouses, property and logistics companies.

Someone had been quietly preparing documents that could transfer voting control if Ronaldo died or became legally incapacitated.

The stolen millions financed the operation.

“Who?”

Claire placed a photocopy on the table.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Ronaldo.

Except Ronaldo had never signed it.

A witness signature appeared beside his.

Beverly Vance.

Elsa shook her head.

“Bev didn't sign that.”

“How do you know?”

“Because she dots the second stroke in her V when signing quickly.”

Claire looked impressed.

The forged signature didn't.

Ronaldo stared at Elsa.

Even from a hospital bed, she noticed details.

“What about Niko?”

Claire's expression tightened.

“Niko contacted us an hour ago.”

“Where?”

“He wants protection.”

“From whom?”

“He wouldn't say over the phone.”

Ronaldo already knew what that meant.

Niko was afraid of the person above him.

Claire continued.

“The original ledger from Calumet disappeared before we arrived.”

Elsa looked at Ronaldo.

“The keycard.”

He removed it from his pocket.

2:47.

Elsa nodded.

“That opens the records cage.”

“Why 2:47?”

“The man who held me gave it to me.”

Ronaldo stared.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted this exposed.”

“Who?”

Elsa hesitated.

“He said his name was Daniel.”

Ronaldo knew no Daniel connected to the operation.

Claire did.

Her face changed.

“Daniel Vance?”

Elsa looked at her.

“Yes.”

Beverly's brother.

A man supposedly dead for six years.

Claire stepped back.

“That's impossible.”

Ronaldo had stopped believing that word.

Daniel Vance had worked briefly at Calumet eleven years earlier.

Then a boating accident had supposedly killed him.

No body had been recovered.

Beverly had spent years believing her brother dead.

If Daniel was alive, he could explain everything.

They returned to Calumet after Elsa stabilized enough to speak with investigators but remained hospitalized.

The records cage stood behind a steel door.

Ronaldo inserted the keycard.

Green light.

Inside was one table.

One chair.

One ledger.

Sal opened it.

The first entries dated back eleven years.

Money.

Companies.

Payments.

Surveillance.

Then one recurring initial.

R.F.

Ronaldo Falcone?

No.

Elsa had noticed something everyone else missed.

The initials appeared on transactions made while Ronaldo was in federal custody and lacked access.

R.F. meant someone else.

Ronaldo turned pages.

At the back was a photograph.

Two men.

Victor.

And Ronaldo's late father.

Ronaldo stared.

His father had died twelve years earlier.

Yet the photograph was timestamped eleven years ago.

Sal whispered, “That can't be him.”

Ronaldo turned the photograph over.

One sentence.

YOUR FATHER DIDN'T DIE WHEN YOU THINK HE DID.

Then the warehouse lights went out.

A phone rang somewhere inside the darkness.

Ronaldo answered.

A man's voice said:

“Son.”
