Chapter 6 - My Father’s Last Lie

Damian raised his gun and whispered:
“Dad?”
Antonio Russo stood beyond the hidden steel door holding an old leather ledger.
A black seal was pressed into its cover.
R-0.
The founder of the Russo Protocol had never been buried in the grave carrying his name.
Damian lowered the weapon.
Not because he trusted the man.
Because his hand had stopped obeying him.
Antonio had aged.
His hair was almost completely white.
He walked with a cane.
But the eyes were the same.
Hard.
Observant.
Impossible to mistake.
“You’re alive.”
Antonio looked at his son.
“Yes.”
Damian punched him.
Antonio fell against the wall.
Victor did not intervene.
Hazel did not either.
Damian stood over his father.
“Twelve years.”
Antonio wiped blood from his mouth.
“I know.”
“You let me bury you.”
“Yes.”
“You let me run your empire while people tried to kill me.”
“I protected you.”
Damian laughed.
“You outsourced that.”
His eyes moved toward Hazel.
Antonio followed his gaze.
“R-17 exceeded every expectation.”
“She has a name.”
Antonio looked back at Damian.
“Yes. She does.”
That tiny concession mattered.
The hidden room contained the real archive of the Russo organization.
Not narcotics records.
Not extortion.
Evidence.
Politicians.
Judges.
Corporations.
Criminal organizations.
Antonio had spent decades collecting leverage.
Carlo wanted it.
That was the real war.
The Russo empire was valuable.
The archive was priceless.
“Why fake your death?” Damian asked.
“Because Carlo had infiltrated everything.”
“You knew?”
“I suspected.”
“So you abandoned me?”
“No.”
“That is exactly what you did.”
Antonio’s face tightened.
“I made you visible so the rest of us could remain invisible.”
Hazel looked sharply at him.
Damian noticed.
“You didn’t know?”
“No,” Hazel said.
Antonio had used Damian as bait.
For twelve years.
Even Hazel had not understood the full plan.
Damian felt something inside him become cold.
“My mother?”
“She refused to participate.”
“Good.”
“She believed we could defeat Carlo without sacrificing your life.”
“She was right.”
Antonio looked toward Hazel.
“Because of her.”
Damian turned.
Hazel did not move.
Antonio explained that Hazel had repeatedly disrupted threats that Antonio intended only to observe.
The restaurant.
The convoy.
The flight.
Antonio’s hidden network had sometimes allowed danger to approach Damian so they could identify Carlo’s operatives.
Hazel had refused.
Every time.
“You disobeyed him,” Damian said.
Hazel shrugged slightly.
“My assignment was keeping you alive.”
“You knew the threats were tests?”
“Some.”
“And you stopped them anyway.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Hazel looked at him as though the answer were obvious.
“Because you would have died.”
Damian almost laughed.
Three years beside him.
Three years invisible.
And she had demonstrated more loyalty than his own father.
Antonio placed the ledger on the table.
“Carlo is not finished.”
“He’s in federal custody.”
“No.”
Damian stared.
Victor stepped forward.
“The man you captured was Carlo’s double.”
Silence.
Damian turned toward Garrett.
“Where is my mother?”
Garrett called the safe house.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Damian’s blood went cold.
They raced upstairs.
The security monitors activated.
Live footage.
Elena’s safe house.
Empty.
A chair overturned.
One guard unconscious.
Carlo appeared on-screen.
The real Carlo.
“You keep taking things from me, nephew.”
Damian stepped closer.
Carlo smiled.
“So I took something from you.”
The camera moved.
Elena was not there.
Instead, Hazel’s apartment appeared.
Damian frowned.
Carlo continued.
“You thought Elena was the final target?”
Hazel’s expression changed.
“No.”
Carlo smiled wider.
“Tell him, Hazel.”
Damian looked at her.
“Tell me what?”
Hazel backed away.
For the first time, she looked genuinely shaken.
Carlo spoke.
“Ask your secretary why Elena chose her.”
“I already know.”
“No. You know the story she was permitted to tell.”
Hazel whispered, “Turn it off.”
Damian looked at her.
“Hazel.”
“Turn it off.”
Carlo laughed.
“Elena didn’t rescue Hazel because she happened to discover a frightened sixteen-year-old.”
Damian’s stomach tightened.
“Why did she rescue her?”
Carlo leaned toward the camera.
“Because Hazel’s father was a Russo.”
Silence.
Damian stared at Hazel.
“No.”
Hazel’s eyes filled with something he had never seen there.
Shame.
Fear.
Grief.
Carlo continued.
“Not Antonio.”
Damian’s mind raced.
Then he understood.
Carlo.
Hazel closed her eyes.
Carlo smiled.
“Hello, daughter.”
The screen went black.
Damian turned toward Hazel.
Before either could speak, Antonio’s hidden archive sounded an alarm.
One file had just been remotely opened.

A file labeled:
DAMIAN SUCCESSION — FINAL ORDER.
