Chapter 6 - The Secret Beneath My Own Name

The lights went out.
For a second, nobody moved.
The warehouse disappeared into complete darkness.
I could hear Fiona breathing.
I could hear Wendy whispering something.
And I could hear Ethan moving.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like he already knew someone was coming.
"Stay behind me."
Ethan's voice was barely above a whisper.
I grabbed Fiona and pulled her closer.
My instincts took over.
I didn't care about the secrets anymore.
I didn't care about Mark.
I didn't care about eight years of lies.
My only thought was protecting my daughter.
A small sound came from the darkness.
Footsteps.
Someone was walking inside the warehouse.
Not rushing.
Not hiding.
Walking like they belonged there.
Ethan reached toward the wall.
A small emergency light flickered on.
The room returned in a dim red glow.
And standing near the entrance was a person wearing a dark jacket.
My entire body froze.
Because I recognized the voice before I saw the face.
"Daniel."
Mark stepped into the light.
My best friend.
My business partner.
The man who had spent eight years pretending to help me survive.
He looked exactly the same.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
The same confident smile.
Like he was walking into one of our old business meetings.
Not into a warehouse where his secrets were being exposed.
Nobody spoke.
Then Mark looked at Fiona.
His expression softened.
"Hey, sweetheart."
My anger exploded.
"Don't talk to her."
The smile disappeared.
Just for a moment.
Then he looked back at me.
"You really think I'm the enemy?"
I stepped forward.
"You were at the garage."
Silence.
Mark's face changed slightly.
"You saw the video."
It wasn't a question.
I felt my stomach turn.
"You knew."
Mark looked around the room.
At Ethan.
At Wendy.
Then back at me.
"You found everything faster than I expected."
The words made my blood run cold.
"Everything?"
I pointed at him.
"You were there the night my wife disappeared."
Mark didn't answer.
That was enough.
I had spent eight years blaming myself.
Thinking maybe I worked too much.
Maybe I missed signs.
Maybe I should have protected Jessi better.
But all this time...
The person standing beside me had known.
"Why?"
My voice cracked.
"Why did you do it?"
Mark sighed.
Almost disappointed.
"Because you never asked the right questions."
I stared at him.
"What does that mean?"
He walked further into the warehouse.
Ethan moved immediately.
"Don't come closer."
Mark smiled.
"You always were protective."
Then he looked at Ethan.
"But you were never good at finishing what you started."
Ethan's face changed.
That caught my attention.
"What does that mean?"
Neither man answered.
I looked between them.
"Someone explain."
Ethan looked away.
Mark laughed quietly.
"You still don't know."
I hated that sentence.
Everyone kept saying it.
Like my entire life was a puzzle everyone else had already solved.
"Know what?"
Mark looked directly at me.
"The truth about your father."
I froze.
"My father?"
Mark nodded.
"Your father wasn't the victim you thought he was."
I felt anger immediately.
"Don't talk about him."
My father had died when I was young.
He wasn't perfect.
But he was the reason I learned to work hard.
The reason I built everything.
Mark continued.
"Your father created the foundation."
I shook my head.
"I don't understand."
"You weren't building a company, Daniel."
He stepped closer.
"You were rebuilding something that already existed."
Ethan moved toward the computer.
"Don't listen to him."
Mark looked at Ethan.
"You should tell him."
The room became silent.
I looked at Ethan.
"What is he talking about?"
Ethan didn't answer.
That scared me.
Because Ethan had always been the person who seemed to know everything.
But now...
he looked guilty.
I turned toward him.
"Ethan."
He closed his eyes.
Then opened them.
"Your father had partners."
I frowned.
"Everyone has partners."
"Not like this."
He walked toward the files.
"Years ago, your father was involved with a private financial network."
I shook my head.
"My father was a businessman."
"Yes."
Ethan looked at me.
"But he discovered something he wasn't supposed to discover."
Mark smiled.
"And that's why he died."
The room went completely silent.
I stared at him.
"What did you say?"
Mark didn't repeat it.
He didn't need to.
I heard every word.
My father.
The man I believed died from an accident.
The man whose death had shaped my entire childhood.
Was connected to this?
"No."
I shook my head.
"You are lying."
Mark looked almost sad.
"That's what Jessi said at first."
My heart stopped.
"You talked to Jessi about this?"
"Of course."
He looked at me.
"Your wife was smarter than you."
The insult didn't hurt.
The truth behind it did.
"Where is she?"
Mark looked toward the warehouse ceiling.
"Closer than you think."
My hands tightened.
"Bring her to me."
Mark smiled.
"I can't."
"Why?"
A pause.
Then:
"Because she's the reason you found this place."
I didn't understand.
"What?"
Mark reached into his jacket.
He pulled out a small envelope.
He threw it onto the table.
"Open it."
Nobody moved.
I walked toward it.
Slowly.
Inside was a photograph.
My house.
My family room.
Taken years ago.
Jessi was there.
I was there.
Fiona was a baby.
And standing behind us...
was Mark.
But the date on the photo made no sense.
Because it was taken before Mark and I supposedly met.
I looked at him.
"What is this?"
Mark said nothing.
I turned the photo over.
There was writing on the back.
A sentence.
My hands started shaking.
"Daniel, if you are reading this, it means Mark finally showed you who he really is."
My breathing stopped.
Because the handwriting belonged to Jessi.
I looked at Ethan.
Then Wendy.
"What is this?"
Ethan stepped closer.
"She left messages everywhere."
I looked at the photo again.
Another line was written underneath.
"But there is one person you must never believe."
My heart raced.
I turned the photo over again.
The next words were hidden under a torn section.
Only three letters remained visible.
M...
A...
R...
I looked up.
Mark was watching me.
Not angry.
Not afraid.
Waiting.
"Daniel."
His voice was quiet.
"You need to understand something."
I stared at him.
"What?"
He took a step closer.
"The person who betrayed Jessi wasn't me."
My eyes narrowed.
"Then who?"
Mark looked toward Wendy.
Everyone followed his gaze.
Wendy's face turned pale.
"No..."
I felt the room shift.
Because for the first time...
Mark wasn't looking like someone defending himself.
He was looking like someone revealing a secret.
"Wendy knows."
My eyes moved toward her.
"Wendy?"
She stepped backward.
"Daniel..."
"Tell me he's lying."
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
I felt something break inside.
Another lie.
Another person.
Another secret.
Then Ethan's computer suddenly turned on.
A new file appeared on the screen.
No one touched it.
No one opened it.
But it started playing by itself.
A video.
The image was dark.
Shaky.
Then a woman's face appeared.
Jessi.
But she wasn't alone.
She was sitting in a room.
Someone was standing behind her.
Someone whose face was hidden.
Jessi looked directly into the camera.
Her eyes were full of fear.
"Daniel..."
I stepped closer.
The video continued.
"If you're watching this..."
She looked behind her.
Then whispered:
"That means I didn't escape."
The screen flickered.
The person behind her moved closer.
Jessi started crying.
And then she said the name that made everyone in the room freeze.
"Because the person who trapped me..."
The video glitched.
Her voice became distorted.
Then the screen showed the person's face for one second.
Just one second.
Long enough for me to recognize them.
And long enough for Ethan to whisper:
May you like
"No..."
Because the person standing behind my wife was someone who had been in my house that morning.
