Chapter 5

Two years had passed since the truth was unburied on the north ridge, but peace in Willow Creek had a funny way of being short-lived.

The sanctuary grounds were now lush, green, and vibrant, drawing visitors from across Texas who came to witness the town’s remarkable environmental rebirth. Mark’s construction firm had pivoted entirely to sustainable, eco-friendly builds, while Chloe’s online platform boasted millions of followers who tuning in weekly for her design and restoration tutorials. Evelyn’s small white cottage by the pond was often filled with the laughter of ten-year-old Lily, who had grown inseparable from her grandmother.

On a warm afternoon in late October, as the sun dipped behind the timber canopy, a sleek black SUV with blacked-out windows pulled up to the edge of the sanctuary boundary line.

A tall man in a tailored trench coat stepped out, adjusting his dark glasses. He walked up to the newly erected stone monument dedicated to the Vance family’s conservation efforts. He ran his fingers over the carved letters of Evelyn’s name, a slow, cold smirk forming on his lips.

He pulled a vintage silver pocket watch from his coat—one that bore the exact same crest as Richard Vance’s old corporate seal—and clicked it shut.

"You thought you cleaned house, Mark," the stranger muttered under his breath, turning his gaze toward the glowing lights of the main farmhouse in the distance. "But you only found the dirt Richard wanted you to find."

Inside the farmhouse, the dinner table was set, and the family was raising their glasses in a toast to two years of freedom and renewal. Outside, the autumn wind rustled the pecan trees, carrying with it the faint, unsettling chime of a cellular ringtone coming from an unknown caller on Mark’s phone on the counter.

Mark picked up the phone and pressed answer.

"Hello?"

"Enjoy the quiet while it lasts, brother," a smooth, unfamiliar voice whispered through the receiver. "Because Father’s real estate wasn't the only thing he left behind."

Mark’s smile dissolved instantly as his eyes locked onto Chloe across the room. The fight for Willow Creek wasn't over—it had only just begun. But standing beside the family he had fought so hard to rebuild, Mark knew that no secret, no threat, and no ghost from the past would ever tear them apart again.
