Chapter 2 - THE REVELATION

Two weeks after the reading of the will, the public war between the Vance family reached a boiling point. The media was having a field day. Headlines flooded social media: "Former Nurse Steals $40 Million Empire!" and "Tragic Heir Left With $1 While Stepmother Takes All!"
Public opinion was overwhelmingly against Evelyn. Online commentators tore her apart, calling her a gold-digger, a black widow, and a sociopath. Marcus and Clara launched an aggressive media campaign, giving tearful interviews on national television, portraying themselves as loving children who were heartlessly cast aside by a scheming younger woman.
Inside Vance Enterprises, the situation was just as hostile. The board members refused to cooperate with Evelyn. Employees whispered behind her back whenever she walked down the hallways. Marcus had hired a high-profile legal team to contest the will on grounds of undue influence and mental incapacity.
Despite the immense pressure, Evelyn arrived at the headquarters every morning at 7:00 AM. She worked eighteen-hour days, digging through corporate financial records, bank statements, and private legal documents.
She wasn't looking for ways to protect her new wealth. She was looking for the truth.
One evening, around 9:00 PM, the executive floor was completely dark except for the lights in Arthur’s former corner office. Evelyn sat at the massive oak desk, her eyes red from staring at spreadsheet files.
Suddenly, the heavy door clicked open.
Evelyn looked up sharply. Marcus stood in the doorway, dressed in a wrinkled suit, smelling strongly of whiskey. His eyes were bloodshot, and he carried a thick leather briefcase.
"You shouldn't be here, Marcus," Evelyn said calmly, reaching under the desk toward the silent security alarm button. "The building security was instructed to escort you off the premises if you showed up."
"Go ahead, press the button," Marcus sneered, taking slow, unsteady steps into the room. "Call your guards. But before they drag me out, you might want to look at what's inside this briefcase."
Marcus threw the heavy briefcase onto the desk. It fell open, spilling dozens of printed bank statements, off-shore account records, and confidential medical reports.
Evelyn stared at the documents, her frown deepening. "What is this?"
"That, my dear stepmother, is the evidence that is going to send you to prison for the rest of your life," Marcus laughed bitterly. "You thought you were so clever, didn't you? You thought you could hide Arthur's real medical records?"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Evelyn said, keeping her voice even.
"My father didn't die of a natural heart attack!" Marcus slammed his hand on the desk, leaning over her. "I hired an independent private investigator to check Arthur's private prescription logs. Two weeks before he died, his dosage of heart medication was tripled. Tripled, Evelyn! And guess who was the only person living in that house? Who was the person administering his pills every night? You!"
Evelyn’s chest rose and fell, but she did not panic. She looked at the medical records on the desk. "Marcus, if you think I altered his dosage, you are dumber than I thought."
"Don't play games with me!" Marcus yelled. "The toxicology report from the private blood sample we obtained shows lethal levels of Digitalis in his system! You poisoned him! You wanted the money now before he could change his mind!"
"Look at the dates on those financial statements!" Evelyn suddenly shouted back, standing up and pointing directly at the papers scattered across the desk.
Marcus blinked, caught off guard by her sudden outburst.
"Look at the dates, Marcus!" Evelyn repeated, her voice ringing with authority. "Look at the transactions from Vance Enterprises' primary offshore account in the Cayman Islands over the last three years! Look at who signed those wire transfers!"
Marcus lowered his eyes to the bank records. His brow furrowed as he scanned the lines of numbers.
"Three million dollars transferred in March. Four million in July. Five million in November," Evelyn said, walking around the desk toward him. "A total of twenty-two million dollars systematically drained from Vance Enterprises over thirty-six months. And look at the authorized digital signature on every single transfer."
Marcus’s face went completely pale. His fingers trembled as he held up a document. The signature on the authorization line wasn't Evelyn’s. It wasn't Arthur’s either.
It was Clara’s signature.
"Clara..." Marcus whispered, his voice barely audible. "No... that's impossible. Clara doesn't even have access to the Cayman accounts..."
"She had access because she stole your father's private encryption key three years ago," Evelyn revealed, her tone shifting from anger to deep pity. "Your sister wasn't poor, Marcus. She was bankrupting your father's company from the inside to cover her secret gambling debts and failed real estate investments in Dubai. Your father discovered it six months ago."
Marcus shook his head in violent denial. "No! You're lying! Clara loved Dad! She wouldn't—"
"Arthur knew everything," Evelyn interrupted softly. "When he found out, he was heartbroken. It literally broke his heart, Marcus. That's why his health deteriorated so rapidly. He realized his own daughter was robbing him blind, and that you... you were turning a blind eye because she was feeding you kickbacks from those accounts!"
"I didn't know!" Marcus shouted, tears of realization springing to his eyes. "I thought those payouts were legitimate quarterly bonuses! She told me Dad authorized them!"
"She lied to you, Marcus!" Evelyn took a step closer, looking him straight in the eyes. "And do you want to know who was changing Arthur's heart medication? Do you want to know who brought him his private tea every single afternoon during his last month alive?"
Marcus froze. A cold, suffocating terror washed over him as the pieces of the puzzle began to click together in his mind.
"Clara..." Marcus breathed out, horror filling his face. "She... she was poisoning him?"
"Arthur caught her changing his pills three weeks before he died," Evelyn said quietly, tears finally welling in her eyes. "That's why he called Mr. Harrison in secret. That's why he rewrote the will. He didn't cut you out because he hated you, Marcus. He cut you out to protect the estate from Clara, and to force you to wake up and see the monster your sister had become!"
Before Marcus could process the crushing truth, the office door swung open once again.
May you like
Standing in the doorway was Clara. But she was no longer crying or playing the victim. She held a sleek black handgun in her gloved hand, her eyes wide, wild, and unhinged.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Evelyn," Clara said, a sinister, terrifying smile spreading across her face as she raised the gun directly at Evelyn's chest. "And Marcus... you always were an idiot."
