Chapter 4 - The Identity Behind The Badge

The person standing at the dining room entrance did not say a word.

Neither did I.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Because the impossible had just walked into the room.

The man standing there looked older than the photograph.

But there was no mistaking him.

The same eyes.

The same posture.

The same calm expression of someone who had spent years hiding what he truly knew.

Daniel Carter.

The man who was supposed to be dead.

James looked at me.

Then at the stranger.

Then back at me.

His confusion was almost painful to watch.

"Who is that?"

Nobody answered.

Daniel stepped inside slowly.

His eyes never left mine.

"Evelyn."

Hearing my name from his mouth felt unreal.

Five years disappeared in a single second.

I remembered the last time I saw him.

The explosion.

The smoke.

The emergency evacuation.

The final message I received saying there were no survivors.

I remembered standing there, refusing to believe it.

I remembered everyone telling me I needed to accept it.

But something inside me always knew.

The story had never been complete.

"You're alive."

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

William stood up immediately.

His military instincts returned.

"You were supposed to be gone."

Daniel looked at him.

"I know."

The answer was too calm.

Almost too simple.

William's expression hardened.

"Do you have any idea what happened after you disappeared?"

Daniel looked around the room.

"I know exactly what happened."

The words made everyone uncomfortable.

Especially William.

I noticed.

And I realized something.

William wasn't surprised that Daniel was alive.

Not completely.

He was afraid of what Daniel might say.

I turned toward him.

"You knew."

William looked at me.

"Evelyn—"

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"You knew something."

He didn't deny it.

That was enough.

Five years of questions.

Five years of silence.

Five years of believing I was searching for answers alone.

And now I realized some of those answers had been sitting in front of me.

"Why?"

William lowered his eyes.

"I didn't have the full picture."

I laughed quietly.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I was tired of hearing that phrase.

Nobody ever had the full picture.

Nobody ever knew enough.

Nobody ever had the right moment to tell the truth.

But somehow, everyone always knew enough to keep me in the dark.

Daniel stepped closer.

"William tried to protect you."

I looked at him.

"From what?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

That pause told me everything.

"From the people who wanted you gone."

The room went silent again.

James looked at his father.

"What is he talking about?"

William finally spoke.

"James, this doesn't involve you."

I turned toward him.

"Actually, it does."

Everyone looked at me.

"If my identity was erased, if my records were changed, if someone tried to make me disappear, then everyone in this room is involved."

Nobody argued.

Because they knew I was right.

Daniel looked at the folder on the table.

"You found it."

I nodded.

"Your handwriting was inside."

His expression changed.

Only slightly.

But I saw it.

"You weren't supposed to see that yet."

"Yet?"

The word bothered me.

"How long have you been planning this?"

Daniel looked at me.

"I wasn't planning anything."

"Then why leave messages?"

His eyes moved toward the phone on the table.

"Because I needed to know if you were still being watched."

I frowned.

"Watched by who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he looked at William.

William understood immediately.

"Not here."

I stared at both of them.

"No."

They both looked at me.

"I spent five years being told nothing."

I stepped closer.

"I lost people because nobody trusted me with the truth."

My voice shook slightly.

"But I am done being protected from information that affects my own life."

Daniel looked at me for a long moment.

Then he nodded.

"You deserve the truth."

James moved closer.

"Evelyn, what is happening?"

I looked at him.

For a moment, I wanted to explain everything.

I wanted to tell him about the missions.

The secrets.

The people who disappeared.

But another thought stopped me.

He had been beside me for years.

And he never knew.

Not because I hid everything.

Because he never looked deeper.

"I don't know yet."

That answer seemed to hurt him.

But I couldn't comfort him.

Not now.

Daniel reached into his coat.

Everyone immediately tensed.

He noticed.

Slowly, he removed a small device.

A storage drive.

He placed it beside the photograph.

"This is what they were looking for."

I stared at it.

"What is it?"

"The original mission file."

William's face changed.

"No."

Daniel looked at him.

"Yes."

"That file was destroyed."

Daniel shook his head.

"Only the copy they wanted you to believe was destroyed."

I looked between them.

"What is on it?"

Daniel's expression became serious.

"Everything."

The word carried weight.

"What everything?"

He looked at me.

"The reason your name disappeared."

A pause.

"The reason my death was recorded."

Another pause.

"The reason someone inside our own command structure betrayed us."

The room felt smaller.

I looked at the device.

A tiny piece of technology.

Holding years of unanswered questions.

I reached for it.

But Daniel stopped me.

"Not yet."

I looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because once you see it, there is no going back."

I almost smiled.

"Daniel, there hasn't been a way back for five years."

He looked away.

Because he knew.

I took the device.

The moment my fingers touched it, my phone vibrated.

Everyone looked at me.

I checked the screen.

Unknown number.

One message.

My heart slowed.

Because I recognized the wording immediately.

The same person who had sent the first message.

The message appeared:

You found him.

I looked up.

Daniel was staring at my phone.

His face had changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Recognition.

"Who sent that?"

I didn't answer.

Because another message arrived.

A photo appeared.

A photo taken inside this house.

A photo from moments ago.

My hand holding the device.

Daniel standing beside me.

William watching us.

And in the background...

Someone else was standing behind the dining room window.

Daniel stepped toward the glass.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

"Evelyn..."

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

May you like

He didn't answer.

Because the person outside slowly lifted a hand and knocked on the window...
