Chapter 1 - The Locket in the Envelope

"She isn't your biological daughter."

The stranger's voice hit like ice.

My five-year-old Lily clutched my leg tight.

"Mommy, who is this man?"

My hand trembled over her small shoulder.

My husband Mark stepped forward instantly.

"Get off our porch right now."

eternal silence stretched across the lawn.

The stranger held up a yellow envelope.

"Look at the DNA report inside."

Mark stared at the thick paper.

His knuckles turned completely white.

Why wasn't Mark screaming at him?

Why did my husband look terrified?

"I'm her birth uncle," the stranger said.

"And her mother wants her back."

My breath caught in my throat.

I adopted Lily five years ago legally.

Or at least, I thought I did.

My mind raced into total darkness.

The man tossed the envelope onto our steps.

He walked away without another word.

I dropped to my knees on the wood.

My fingers tore open the paper envelope.

Inside was a shiny silver heart locket.

It was identical to my own locket.

The one my sister wore before she died.

"Mark, what is this?" I whispered.

He refused to meet my eyes.

"Throw it away, Clara," Mark urged softly.

"He's just trying to scam us."

He reached to grab the silver heart.

I pulled it back toward my chest.

I snapped the tiny locket open.

Inside was a photograph of two babies.

One had a tiny red birthmark on her wrist.

It was shaped like a small crescent moon.

Lily had that exact same birthmark.

The second baby wore a blue blanket.

"Who is the second baby, Mark?"

Mark took a step backward toward the house.

He looked around at the empty street.

"We shouldn't talk about this out here."

My heart hammered against my ribs.

Did my dead sister have twins?

Or was Lily never my sister's baby?

I carried Lily inside to her bedroom.

I set her down with her coloring books.

"Stay here sweetie, Mommy will be back."

She smiled and picked up a crayon.

I walked into the quiet kitchen.

Mark was standing near the back window.

His phone was pressed to his ear.

"He found us," Mark said quietly into it.

"She has the silver locket now."

I froze in the shadow of the door.

Who was Mark talking to so secretly?

"We need to move the money tonight."

Money?

What money was he talking about?

Mark hung up the phone quickly.

He turned and saw me standing there.

His face drained of all color.

"Clara, let me explain everything."

"Who was on that phone, Mark?"

He swallowed hard and looked away.

"It was our adoption lawyer, Arthur."

"Why are you moving money to Arthur?"

"To protect our family from that man."

My stomach churned with deep suspicion.

"That man knew about the crescent birthmark."

"It's just a coincidence, Clara."

"Nothing about this feels like a coincidence."

I remembered the day Lily was brought home.

Mark had handled all the legal paperwork.

I was recovering from a severe illness.

I trusted my husband completely back then.

Now every memory felt like a lie.

"Show me the original adoption file," I said.

"It's locked in the safe downstairs."

"Then give me the key right now."

Mark hesitated for three long seconds.

"I lost the key months ago."

He was lying directly to my face.

I walked straight toward his private office.

"Clara, stop!" he shouted, following close.

I opened his desk drawer violently.

Tucked under a notebook lay the safe key.

My hands shook as I grabbed it.

"Don't do this," Mark pleaded softly.

I marched down to the basement safe.

My fingers dialed the four-digit combination.

The heavy steel door clicked open.

Inside was a thick black leather binder.

I pulled it out into the dim light.

I flipped open to the first page.

It was Lily's official birth certificate.

The mother's name was crossed out.

The father's name made my blood run cold.

It wasn't a stranger's name at all.

It was Mark's own brother, Julian.

Julian had supposedly died six years ago.

Below his signature was a second document.

A bank transfer receipt for fifty thousand dollars.

Paid directly to my mother three years ago.

My own mother had taken money from Mark.

I backed away from the steel safe.

"You bought my sister's child from my mother?"

Mark stood on the top basement step.

His face was cold and devoid of emotion.

"I didn't buy her to hurt you."

"You lied to me for five years!"

"I did it to save your sanity!"

"Where is Julian?" I screamed in tears.

May you like

"Julian is alive," Mark said quietly.

"And he's coming to take her back."
