Chapter 6 - The Truth My Family Buried

"If you are watching this, it means my parents finally failed to keep you away from the truth..."

The courtroom froze.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

Not even my father.

The voice coming from the speakers belonged to someone I had spent fourteen years believing I would never hear again.

Emily.

My sister.

The person my family erased.

The person my parents convinced me had disappeared forever.

I stared at the screen.

A younger version of Emily appeared.

She looked different.

Not because she had changed.

Because I had never seen her like this before.

Confident.

Determined.

Afraid.

She sat in front of a camera in what looked like a small apartment.

Her eyes were red, like she had been crying before recording.

But her voice was steady.

"My name is Emily Carter. If Ava is watching this, then I need her to know one thing."

The video paused for a moment.

Emily looked directly into the camera.

"I never abandoned you."

My chest tightened.

Fourteen years.

Fourteen years of believing someone chose to leave me.

Fourteen years of wondering why my sister disappeared without saying goodbye.

And now I was hearing the truth.

She didn't leave.

She was taken away.

The video continued.

"When I discovered what Dad was doing, I thought I could fix it quietly."

My father shifted in his chair.

I noticed.

The judge noticed.

Everyone noticed.

Emily continued.

"I thought if I collected enough evidence, if I showed the right people, everything would stop."

She looked down briefly.

"I was wrong."

The screen showed another image.

Documents.

Bank records.

Names.

Companies.

Accounts.

My eyes moved across the information.

I didn't understand every detail.

But I understood enough.

Millions of dollars.

Hidden transfers.

Fake organizations.

Money moving through places designed to hide where it came from.

Judge Reynolds leaned closer.

"Pause the video."

The court officer stopped it.

The judge looked toward my father.

"Mr. Carter, do you have an explanation?"

My father didn't answer.

That was the first time I realized something.

Silence could be a confession.

Richard Hale immediately stood.

"Your Honor, we need to consider that this video may have been manipulated."

I looked at him.

Of course.

The first defense was always denial.

"You knew about it," I said.

Richard looked at me.

"I knew there were family disputes."

"No."

My voice remained calm.

"You knew about Emily."

His face tightened.

A small reaction.

But enough.

The judge saw it.

"Mr. Hale, sit down."

Richard slowly returned to his chair.

The video continued.

Emily appeared again.

"I tried to contact Ava three times."

The room went quiet.

"Three times."

My fingers tightened.

"What?"

Emily's voice continued through the speakers.

"The first time, my message never reached her."

A new image appeared.

A message history.

Blocked.

Deleted.

The second time.

Another message.

Never delivered.

The third time.

A letter.

Returned.

My vision blurred slightly.

Not from tears.

From anger.

Because someone had stolen those moments from me.

Someone had decided I didn't deserve the truth.

"I eventually realized they were monitoring everything connected to Ava."

Emily looked directly at the camera.

"And I knew if I kept trying, they would use me against her."

The screen paused again.

My mother looked down.

For the first time, she looked old.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had carried a secret too long.

The video continued.

"That's when I made the hardest decision of my life."

Emily took a deep breath.

"I disappeared."

Nobody spoke.

"Not because I wanted to."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"Because I loved my sister enough to stay away."

I looked at her.

My sister.

The person I thought abandoned me.

The person who had actually sacrificed everything.

The judge asked the court officer to pause the video.

He looked at Noah.

"How did you find this?"

Noah hesitated.

Then answered.

"I found the flash drive hidden behind a wall panel in Dad's office."

My father immediately looked at him.

"Why were you searching my office?"

Noah flinched.

I stepped forward.

"Don't."

My father looked at me.

"Don't what?"

"Don't make him feel guilty for finding your secrets."

The courtroom became silent.

Because my father had spent his entire life controlling conversations.

But now he couldn't.

The judge looked at him.

"Mr. Carter, your behavior today raises serious concerns."

My father looked away.

The man who had built his entire identity around power suddenly looked powerless.

The hearing continued.

More evidence was shown.

More pieces connected.

Emily had documented everything.

Dates.

Financial transfers.

Conversations.

People involved.

Including Richard Hale.

The lawyer who had spent the morning calling me unstable.

The lawyer who had mocked my uniform.

The lawyer who had tried to convince everyone I was dangerous.

Now he sat quietly as his own involvement appeared on the screen.

The judge turned toward him.

"Mr. Hale."

Richard remained silent.

"Did you help conceal these records?"

Richard swallowed.

"No."

A simple answer.

Too simple.

I knew that answer.

Soldiers knew when someone was lying.

Not because of magic.

Because people revealed themselves.

Their eyes.

Their breathing.

Their hesitation.

Richard was hiding something.

Then Emily's video reached the final section.

The screen showed her sitting closer to the camera.

Her expression was different.

More serious.

"If Ava is seeing this, there is one thing she needs to know."

I leaned forward.

The entire courtroom did.

"Your father wasn't only afraid I would expose his crimes."

Emily paused.

"He was afraid you would discover the truth about your own past."

My heartbeat changed.

The judge looked confused.

My mother suddenly stood.

"Turn it off."

Everyone looked at her.

She immediately realized what she had done.

But it was too late.

The judge stared.

"Why?"

My mother said nothing.

Emily's voice continued.

"Ava, there is something they never told you."

The screen changed.

A document appeared.

A birth record.

My name.

My date of birth.

And another name underneath.

I stared.

Because I didn't understand.

Then I saw the information highlighted.

The courtroom disappeared.

The sounds faded.

The only thing I could see was the document.

The truth I had spent my entire life missing.

The judge looked at the screen.

Then at my parents.

"Mrs. Carter..."

My mother sat slowly.

Her face had gone completely pale.

The judge continued.

"Is this document authentic?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

The man who raised me.

The man who taught me strength.

The man who told me family was everything.

He couldn't even look at me.

"Tell me," I whispered.

My father closed his eyes.

And for the first time...

he looked broken.

The video played one final sentence.

Emily's voice filled the courtroom.

"Ava, the person you thought was your father..."

The screen flickered.

The audio cut for a second.

May you like

Then returned.

And my father's name disappeared from the document.
