Chapter 3 - The Man Behind The Missing Pieces

“Turn around, Ethan.”
The words stayed on my screen.
Four simple words.
But they carried the weight of a warning.
I stood frozen inside the abandoned storage facility.
The lights were dead.
The air was cold.
Ranger stood beside me, his body tense, waiting for my command.
I didn’t turn around immediately.
That was something the military taught me.
Never react before understanding the situation.
Never give someone the advantage of your fear.
I lowered my phone slowly.
I listened.
Nothing.
No footsteps.
No breathing.
No movement.
Only the sound of my own heartbeat.
Then Ranger growled.
Quietly.
Almost like he was warning me that whoever was behind me was close.
I turned.
Fast.
My flashlight cut through the darkness.
The room was empty.
Rows of old storage shelves.
Boxes.
Metal containers.
Nothing else.
But someone had been there.
I knew it.
The camera proved it.
The message proved it.
Someone had taken a picture of me seconds earlier.
I walked toward the entrance.
“Show yourself.”
My voice echoed.
No answer.
I checked every corner.
Nothing.
Whoever sent the message wanted me to know they were watching.
They wanted me scared.
But they made one mistake.
They reminded me who I was.
I was not the broken husband sitting in an empty bedroom.
I was not the father waiting for someone to return my daughter.
I was a soldier.
And soldiers searched.
I looked back at the hidden camera.
I removed the memory card.
Then I heard something.
A small sound.
Behind the wall.
Ranger moved instantly.
He ran toward the far corner of the storage room.
I followed him.
There was an old metal cabinet pushed against the wall.
I moved it aside.
Behind it was a small opening.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a brown envelope.
My name was written on it.
Ethan Carter.
My hands tightened.
I opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
I looked at it.
And everything inside me stopped.
It was a picture of Marissa.
Holding Lily.
Standing beside the same man from the SUV.
But the date on the back was from eight months ago.
Four months before I came home from my last deployment.
I turned the picture over.
A message was written behind it.
“She knows the truth.”
I stared at those words.
Who was she?
Marissa?
Someone else?
I pulled out the burner phone.
I tried turning it back on.
Nothing.
The battery was completely dead.
I put the photograph into my pocket.
Then I noticed something else inside the envelope.
A small piece of paper.
A handwritten list.
Three names.
Marissa Carter.
Lily Carter.
Ethan Carter.
My name was crossed out.
I felt my stomach tighten.
Why would someone make a list with my family’s names?
Why remove mine?
Ranger suddenly looked toward the door.
A vehicle stopped outside.
I turned off my flashlight.
The sound of footsteps approached.
Slow.
Confident.
Someone who wasn’t trying to hide.
The door opened.
A man stepped inside.
The same man from the photograph.
The same man from the SUV.
He looked at me.
Then at Ranger.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then he said:
“You weren’t supposed to find this place.”
I raised my weapon.
“Where is my daughter?”
The man looked away.
Not afraid.
That bothered me.
“Ethan, listen to me.”
“You know my name.”
“Yes.”
“You know where I live.”
“Yes.”
“You know my family.”
His silence answered.
My grip tightened.
“Who are you?”
The man looked at the photograph in my hand.
Then back at me.
“My name is Daniel Cross.”
I waited.
Nothing.
The name meant nothing.
But his expression told me something.
He expected me to know him.
“Where is Lily?”
Daniel took a step forward.
Ranger moved between us.
Daniel stopped.
“Your dog still remembers me.”
I froze.
“What?”
He looked at Ranger.
“He saw me before.”
My mind raced.
No.
That wasn’t possible.
Ranger only reacted strongly to people he recognized.
But I had never seen Daniel before.
Unless...
Unless Marissa had.
“Where did you meet my wife?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his jacket.
I raised my weapon.
He slowly removed a small object.
A child’s bracelet.
Pink.
With a small silver heart.
Lily’s bracelet.
I knew it instantly.
She wore it every day.
My chest tightened.
“Where did you get that?”
Daniel looked at me.
“She gave it to me.”
The words hit harder than any physical blow.
“She?”
“Marissa.”
I stepped forward.
“Why?”
Daniel looked down.
“Because she knew you would come looking.”
My anger rose.
“You helped her take my daughter.”
“No.”
His answer came immediately.
“I helped protect your daughter.”
I almost laughed.
“Protect her?”
I looked around the empty building.
“My wife disappeared.”
“My child disappeared.”
“You were watching my house.”
“You expect me to believe you’re protecting her?”
Daniel’s face changed.
For the first time, I saw something.
Not fear.
Regret.
“You don’t know what your wife was running from.”
I stared at him.
“You’re wrong.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No, Ethan.”
He looked at the photograph.
“You’re wrong about a lot of things.”
I stepped closer.
“Start talking.”
He looked toward the entrance.
Then back at me.
“She didn’t leave because she wanted another life.”
“Then why?”
“Because someone was coming for Lily.”
The room went silent.
I felt my fingers tighten.
“Who?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
Instead, he reached into his pocket and pulled out another phone.
Not a burner phone.
A regular phone.
He opened a video.
My own house appeared on the screen.
The camera angle was from inside my living room.
I watched myself enter the house earlier that day.
I watched myself call for Marissa.
I watched myself find the empty rooms.
Someone had recorded everything.
Then the camera moved.
A figure appeared.
Standing in my hallway.
Watching me.
My blood went cold.
Because the person on the video wasn’t Daniel.
It wasn’t Marissa.
It wasn’t a stranger.
It was someone I knew.
Someone who had been inside my home before.
Daniel stopped the video.
“You need to understand something.”
I looked at the frozen image.
“Who is that?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Ethan, your wife didn’t betray you.”
I looked at him.
“She was trying to save you.”
My phone suddenly vibrated.
Unknown number.
A new message.
Daniel saw the screen.
His face changed.
“What did it say?”
I looked down.
Only one sentence appeared.
A sentence that made Daniel step backward.
Because he recognized it.
May you like
The message said:
“Ask Daniel why he helped bury the truth about Lily.”
