Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Gone

The woman stood in the doorway.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone in that room knew one thing.

She should not have been there.

The security guards immediately reached for their weapons, but Damiano lifted his hand.

"Wait."

His voice was low.

Controlled.

But I noticed something.

His eyes weren't on the woman.

They were on me.

Like he was trying to understand why I looked like I had just seen a ghost.

Because I had.

The woman slowly stepped into the security room.

The light above her revealed her face completely.

Older.

Tired.

Different.

But still the same person.

The same eyes.

The same small scar near her left eyebrow.

The same eyes that had once watched me blow out birthday candles when I was eight years old.

The same eyes that had held my hand the night I was afraid of thunderstorms.

The same eyes I had cried over when everyone told me she was gone.

My mother.

My mother who disappeared twelve years ago.

My mother who everyone said had abandoned me.

My mother who I had buried without a body.

I couldn't breathe.

"Mom..."

The word barely came out.

The room went silent.

Mia looked at me.

Damiano looked at her.

Nobody expected that answer.

The woman took another step forward.

And tears filled her eyes.

"Serena."

Hearing my name from her voice almost broke me.

Because for twelve years, I had imagined this moment.

Thousands of times.

I imagined anger.

I imagined questions.

I imagined screaming.

But standing there...

I felt nothing but shock.

"You are alive."

It wasn't a question.

It was the only thing my mind could understand.

She nodded slowly.

"I am."

My hands curled into fists.

"Then why?"

Her expression changed.

Pain.

Regret.

Fear.

All at once.

"I tried to come back."

I laughed quietly.

A broken sound.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"No, you don't get to say that."

My voice became stronger.

"You don't disappear for twelve years and come back saying you tried."

Her eyes lowered.

"I know."

"Do you?"

The room became heavier.

"Do you know what it was like?"

I looked at her.

"Every birthday."

A pause.

"Every holiday."

Another pause.

"Every time someone asked me where my mother was."

My voice shook.

"I had to pretend I didn't care."

She closed her eyes.

"I know."

"No."

I stepped closer.

"You don't."

For the first time, Damiano moved.

Not to control me.

Not to stop me.

Just to stand nearby.

Like he understood that this was not a moment he could fix.

Only witness.

My mother looked at him.

Then back at me.

"You brought him here?"

I frowned.

"What?"

Her face became serious.

"You trust him?"

The question felt strange.

Especially after the message I received.

Don't trust Damiano Vercelli.

I looked at Damiano.

He noticed.

"I didn't know she was coming."

My mother studied him.

"I believe you."

Everyone froze.

Because those words surprised me.

After everything.

After the warning.

After the fear.

She believed him.

"Then tell me what is happening."

My mother looked at the frozen security footage.

The envelope.

The ruby.

The photograph.

Then she looked at me.

"They found you because of that."

I looked at the screen.

"The ruby?"

She nodded.

"The ruby was never the target."

Damiano stepped forward.

"Then what was?"

My mother hesitated.

"The person who owned it."

Nobody spoke.

I felt confused.

"What does that mean?"

She looked directly at me.

"It means someone wanted to know if you were still alive."

My heart stopped.

"Me?"

She nodded.

"The ruby was a test."

"A test for what?"

Her expression became darker.

"To see if you would recognize the symbol."

I looked at the jewelry box.

The missing ruby.

The family heirloom.

"I don't understand."

My mother walked toward the screen.

She pointed at the image.

At the ruby.

"You have seen this before."

I shook my head.

"No."

"Yes."

Her voice became softer.

"When you were young."

I stared at her.

"When?"

"The night your father disappeared."

Everything stopped.

My father's name had not been spoken in years.

Not by her.

Not by anyone.

Because my father was another unanswered question.

Another missing piece.

I had been told he left.

Then I had been told he died.

Then people stopped talking about him.

But my mother had just connected him to the ruby.

"What does my father have to do with this?"

She looked toward the door.

Like she was afraid someone might be listening.

"Everything."

Damiano's expression changed.

"Who are you running from?"

My mother looked at him.

Then at me.

"Not who."

A pause.

"What."

The room became silent.

She reached into her coat.

Everyone tensed.

But she didn't pull out a weapon.

She pulled out an old envelope.

The paper was damaged.

The edges were burned.

She handed it to me.

"I kept this because I knew one day you would need it."

My fingers touched the envelope.

My name was written on the front.

But not my current name.

The name I had before my mother disappeared.

A name nobody had used since childhood.

Serena Isabella Sinclair.

I looked at her.

"Why is my middle name here?"

She didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Damiano.

"Because his family knows the truth."

Damiano's face hardened.

"My family?"

My mother nodded.

"The Vercellis were never protecting the ruby."

She looked at him.

"They were protecting what was hidden inside it."

Damiano stared at her.

"What are you talking about?"

"The ruby is not just jewelry."

She pointed toward the security monitor.

"The stone has a marking inside it."

My eyes narrowed.

"What marking?"

My mother looked at me.

"The same marking you were born with."

A cold feeling moved through me.

I remembered.

A small birthmark.

A tiny shape near my shoulder.

My grandmother used to call it a family symbol.

But nobody ever explained why.

Damiano stepped closer.

"Show me."

My mother looked at him carefully.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because once you see it, you can't pretend anymore."

The words hung in the room.

Then suddenly, every phone inside the security room vibrated.

Mine.

Damiano's.

Mia's.

The guards'.

Everyone looked down.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

One photo.

The photograph showed us inside the security room.

Taken seconds ago.

From outside the door.

My blood turned cold.

Someone had been watching us.

The message underneath appeared.

"Stop searching for the truth."

A second message arrived.

"Or she won't survive this time."

My mother read it.

Her face lost all color.

Because she recognized the sender.

Damiano noticed.

"Who sent that?"

She didn't answer.

I looked at her.

"Mom."

Her hands started shaking.

Then she whispered a name.

A name I had never heard before.

A name that made Damiano immediately step back.

Because even he knew it.

And before anyone could say another word, the security room monitor turned on by itself.

A live video appeared.

A man was sitting in a dark room.

His face hidden.

But his voice was clear.

"Hello, Serena."

May you like

The man leaned closer to the camera.

"I think it's time you learned who your mother was really running from..."
