The Ring I Left Behind / Chapter 6 / 7

Chapter 6 - The Father I Was Told I Lost

The door opened slowly.

Not violently.

Not dramatically.

Just enough for a man to step into the house.

A man who looked older than the photograph I had seen.

A man whose face carried years of secrets.

A man I had spent my entire life believing was gone.

My father.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Sofia.

Not him.

The only sound was my own breathing.

Because my mind was trying to reject what my eyes were seeing.

This was impossible.

My father had died when I was nine years old.

That was the story.

The story everyone had repeated.

The story written into my childhood.

The story I had never questioned because children don't question the things adults tell them with enough confidence.

But the man standing in my doorway was looking at me like he had waited decades for this moment.

"Elena."

Hearing him say my name felt wrong.

Like hearing a voice from a dream.

I looked at Sofia.

She wasn't surprised.

That hurt more than anything.

"You knew."

My voice was barely a whisper.

Sofia lowered her eyes.

"Yes."

I looked back at the man.

My father.

A stranger with my blood.

"You let me believe you were dead."

His face changed.

Pain.

Regret.

But not denial.

And somehow, that made it worse.

"I didn't have a choice."

I almost laughed.

A choice.

Everyone had a choice.

Dante had a choice when he lied.

Sofia had a choice when she hid the truth.

Now my father stood in front of me using the same words.

"I didn't have a choice."

I stepped back.

"Do you know how many times I wondered why you left?"

His expression broke.

"I never left you."

"That's exactly what everyone says."

My voice grew stronger.

"Everyone says they didn't leave me. Everyone says they were protecting me. Everyone says they had reasons."

I pointed toward the video still open on my laptop.

"But nobody was there."

The room became silent.

My father looked at the screen.

And the moment he saw my mother's face, his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Grief.

Real grief.

"You watched it."

I nodded.

"She left it for me."

He closed his eyes.

For a moment, he looked less like a mysterious stranger and more like the father I had spent years missing.

Then he walked inside.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like he knew one wrong movement could make me push him away forever.

"My name is Adrian Vance."

I stared at him.

"I know."

He nodded.

"But you don't know the rest."

I crossed my arms.

"I think I've heard that sentence enough times for one lifetime."

A painful smile crossed his face.

"You sound like your mother."

The words hit me unexpectedly.

Because nobody had ever said that to me before.

Not like that.

Not with sadness.

Not with love.

I looked away.

"Tell me the truth."

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Then back at me.

"The truth is your mother and I discovered something about the Moretti family that could have destroyed them."

I immediately thought of Dante.

The hidden account.

The company.

The money.

"What?"

Adrian walked toward the table.

He picked up the documents I had printed.

"You found this."

I nodded.

"This was part of it."

He placed the papers down.

"Twenty-six years ago, Dante's father created a network of companies to hide money and influence."

I listened carefully.

"He used legitimate businesses as a cover."

"The foundation?"

Adrian nodded.

"Part of it."

My stomach tightened.

The work I had built.

The lives I had helped.

All connected to something darker.

"But Dante wasn't like his father."

I looked at him.

"You seem very sure about that."

Adrian looked at the wedding ring sitting in the box beside the papers.

The ring I had removed.

"I watched that boy grow up."

I frowned.

"Boy?"

"Dante was twenty-two when he first helped your mother and me."

I froze.

"He helped you?"

Adrian nodded.

"He was the reason we discovered the truth."

That didn't make sense.

Everything I knew about Dante felt like it was changing every hour.

"Then why did he lie?"

Adrian was quiet.

"Because he was afraid."

"Of what?"

Adrian looked toward the window.

"Of becoming his father."

The answer was familiar.

Because Dante had told me the same thing when we first met.

I don't want to become my father.

For the first time, I wondered if that had been a lie.

Or a confession.

"So why marry me?"

The question escaped before I could stop it.

Everyone went silent.

Adrian looked at me.

"I don't think Dante married you because of your father."

"Then why?"

He didn't answer immediately.

And that hesitation hurt.

Finally, he said:

"Because he loved you."

I hated how much I wanted to believe that.

Because love had become the most dangerous word in my life.

People used love to explain everything.

The lies.

The secrets.

The pain.

"He could have told me."

"Yes."

My father agreed.

"He should have."

The honesty surprised me.

"Then why didn't he?"

Adrian looked at the floor.

"Because the person who destroyed your family was never gone."

The room went still.

"What does that mean?"

He didn't answer.

Again.

The same pattern.

The same silence.

I slammed my hand on the table.

"No."

Everyone looked at me.

"I'm done."

My voice shook.

"I'm done being the person everyone protects while they make decisions about my life."

I looked at my father.

"I want names."

I looked at Sofia.

"I want dates."

I looked toward the door where Dante had left.

"And I want the truth about my husband."

Nobody spoke.

Then my phone vibrated.

Another message.

Unknown Number.

I opened it.

A photo appeared.

My heart stopped.

It was Dante.

Standing outside this house.

Taken minutes earlier.

The message underneath said:

He came back because he knows your father is alive.

Another message appeared.

But he doesn't know the person who brought him here.

I looked at the screen.

Then toward the window.

The street outside was empty.

"Who sent that?"

My father looked at my phone.

His face changed.

"What?"

I showed him.

The moment he saw the photo, all color disappeared from his face.

"That's impossible."

I stared at him.

"What is?"

He didn't answer.

He took the phone from my hand.

Zoomed in.

Then whispered something I barely heard.

"No..."

"What?"

He looked at me.

For the first time since he entered my house, my father looked genuinely terrified.

"That car."

I looked at the image.

A black vehicle parked behind Dante.

Nothing unusual.

Nothing important.

Until Adrian pointed at the license plate.

"I know that car."

My heart started racing.

"Whose is it?"

He slowly looked toward the front door.

Then said:

"The person who drove that car was supposed to be dead."

The lights in the house suddenly went out.

Everything became black.

Sofia gasped.

My father moved instantly.

Not toward the door.

Toward me.

Then, from somewhere inside the darkness, I heard a voice.

A familiar voice.

A voice that should not have been there.

"Elena..."

I froze.

Because it wasn't my father's voice.

It wasn't Sofia's.

It was someone else.

May you like

Someone who had been inside my life for years.

And when the emergency lights finally flickered back on, the person standing in the doorway was the last person I expected to see...
