Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Never Died

The door behind Ethan moved.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Like whoever was standing outside the room didn't want to be heard.
Ethan stopped breathing.
The phone was still pressed against his ear.
The stranger on the other end was silent.
Then he whispered:
"Ethan, don't turn around."
Every instinct told him to look.
But he didn't.
His eyes stayed fixed on the hallway ahead.
"Who is inside my house?"
The man on the phone didn't answer immediately.
That silence frightened Ethan more than anything.
"Who is inside my house?"
This time his voice was louder.
Then the stranger said:
"Someone who has been waiting ten years for you to remember him."
The door behind Ethan opened wider.
A shadow appeared.
He turned.
Nothing.
The hallway was empty.
But the door to the nursery was open.
The same nursery where he had found his father's letter.
The same room where the photograph had been hidden.
Ethan slowly walked toward it.
"Don't go in there."
The voice on the phone was urgent.
But Ethan couldn't stop.
Not anymore.
Too many people had told him what not to do.
Don't ask about Sarah.
Don't question his father.
Don't look into the past.
Don't dig deeper.
And every time he listened, someone else controlled the truth.
He stepped into the nursery.
Nothing had changed.
The small crib.
The toys.
The quiet room.
But something was different.
The box he found earlier was open.
The papers were scattered.
And the photograph of the two boys was gone.
Ethan looked around.
Someone had been here.
Someone had taken it.
His phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Unknown number.
Stop searching.
His heart tightened.
Another message appeared.
You already lost one child.
Don't lose another.
Ethan stared at the words.
His hands became cold.
"What does that mean?"
The man on the phone answered quietly.
"It means they know you found out."
"Who are they?"
A pause.
Then:
"The same people who made you believe you were an only child."
Ethan looked at the empty doorway.
"My parents?"
"Your father tried to protect you."
"And my mother?"
Silence.
That was the answer.
Ethan closed his eyes.
All his life, he believed his parents had given him everything.
A good home.
A safe childhood.
A normal life.
But now every memory felt incomplete.
Like someone had cut pages out of his own story.
"Tell me about Daniel."
The man breathed heavily.
"Daniel was your twin brother."
Ethan gripped the phone.
"No."
"He was born twelve minutes before you."
"No."
"He had the same eyes. The same smile. The same scar on his hand."
Ethan looked down.
A memory appeared.
A childhood photo.
A boy standing beside him.
A scar.
The same scar.
He touched his own hand.
A small mark near his thumb.
A mark he had never thought about.
"Why don't I remember him?"
The man on the phone became quiet.
"Because they made sure you didn't."
The words felt impossible.
"You can't just erase someone's memory."
"No."
The man's voice became darker.
"But you can erase someone's history."
Ethan sat down.
His legs felt weak.
"What happened to him?"
Another pause.
Then:
"Your father found out someone was trying to use Daniel to control the family."
"Who?"
"I don't know everything."
"Then what do you know?"
The man sighed.
"I know Sarah tried to save him."
Ethan looked up.
"Sarah?"
"Yes."
"Why would she help my brother?"
"Because she was his mother."
The room went silent.
Ethan stopped moving.
"What did you say?"
The man repeated it.
"Sarah was Daniel's mother."
"No."
"Ethan..."
"No."
He stood up.
"That's impossible."
"Your father told everyone Daniel died because he wanted to protect you."
Ethan's breathing became heavier.
"But he didn't die."
"No."
"Then where is he?"
The man didn't answer.
"Ethan."
"Where is my brother?"
The voice became softer.
"He is closer than you think."
Before Ethan could respond, the call ended.
He stared at the phone.
Then he heard footsteps.
Not outside.
Inside.
Someone was walking downstairs.
Ethan slowly moved toward the living room.
His heart was pounding.
"Who's there?"
No answer.
Then a voice.
A man's voice.
Older.
Familiar.
"Ethan."
He froze.
Because he knew that voice.
Not from memory.
From somewhere deeper.
A feeling.
A connection.
Like his body remembered something his mind had forgotten.
A man stepped into the light.
Ethan couldn't move.
The man looked about his age.
Same height.
Same dark hair.
Same eyes.
And on his hand...
A scar.
The exact same scar.
"Ethan."
The man looked at him.
"I'm sorry it took this long."
Ethan stepped back.
"No."
The man looked hurt.
"I know this is difficult."
"Who are you?"
The man swallowed.
Then said:
"My name is Daniel Carter."
The world seemed to stop.
Ethan stared.
"No."
Daniel slowly nodded.
"Yes."
"You're dead."
Daniel looked down.
"I was told you needed to believe that."
Ethan's phone slipped slightly in his hand.
"Why?"
Daniel looked around the house.
At the photos.
At the life Ethan built.
"Because someone was afraid that if you remembered me..."
He stopped.
"Remembered what?"
Daniel looked directly at him.
"The night our family was destroyed."
Ethan felt a chill.
"What happened that night?"
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he walked toward the table.
He placed something down.
A small hospital bracelet.
Ethan recognized it immediately.
Because it had his name.
But not his birthday.
Not his hospital.
Not his information.
A different name was written underneath.
Daniel Carter.
Then Daniel said:
"There is something Emma needs to know."
Ethan stared.
"About what?"
Daniel looked toward the door.
His expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
"About the baby."
Ethan's blood ran cold.
"What about my son?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He only whispered:
"Because the child Emma gave birth to is connected to the reason they erased me."
The front door suddenly opened.
Both men turned.
Emma stood there.
May you like
Holding their baby.
And behind her was Sarah.
