Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

The man stood in the doorway.

Nobody spoke.

Not Desmond.

Not Kora.

Not Raina.

Even Teddy stopped moving.

Because everyone in that hallway understood one thing.

The dead were not supposed to come home.

The man looked older.

Different.

His hair had more gray than Desmond remembered.

His face carried years that should not have existed.

But the eyes were the same.

Cold.

Intelligent.

Familiar.

Desmond’s hand remained inside his jacket.

His fingers wrapped around the weapon.

“Adrian.”

The name left his mouth like an accusation.

The man smiled sadly.

“I wondered how long it would take.”

Raina looked between them.

“Who is that?”

Desmond did not answer.

He could not.

Because his entire reality had just broken apart.

Adrian Hail.

His younger brother.

His blood.

His family.

The man whose funeral Desmond attended eighteen years ago.

The man whose death had destroyed the last piece of trust he had left.

“You’re dead.”

Desmond’s voice was low.

Adrian looked down.

“That was the idea.”

The answer made the air colder.

Kora stepped back.

Her face was filled with guilt.

“You knew.”

Desmond turned toward her.

“You knew he was alive?”

Kora looked away.

“I knew he survived.”

The silence that followed was worse than any confession.

Desmond looked back at Adrian.

“You let me bury you.”

Adrian’s expression changed.

“I had no choice.”

“Everyone has a choice.”

“Not when your enemies control the people you love.”

Desmond stepped forward.

“Don’t talk to me about enemies.”

His voice sharpened.

“You disappeared.”

“You let me believe Maeve was gone.”

Adrian’s face changed.

At the mention of her name, something painful appeared.

“I never wanted Maeve to disappear.”

Raina suddenly moved.

“Stop.”

Everyone looked at her.

Her eyes were filled with anger.

“My sister’s name has been used by every person in this room.”

She looked at Desmond.

“You knew her.”

Then Adrian.

“You knew her.”

Then Kora.

“You protected secrets.”

Her voice trembled.

“And none of you thought about what happened to the people left behind.”

Teddy held onto her hand.

Raina immediately softened.

But only for him.

Desmond noticed.

She was not weak.

She was hurt.

There was a difference.

Adrian looked at Teddy.

Something changed in his expression.

A sadness.

A recognition.

“Is that him?”

Raina became defensive immediately.

“Don’t look at my son like you know him.”

Adrian looked at Desmond.

“You never told her.”

Desmond frowned.

“Told her what?”

Adrian did not answer.

That silence was enough.

Desmond felt something inside him shift.

“What are you talking about?”

Adrian looked at Teddy again.

Then at the ring.

“The ring was never just a ring.”

Raina tightened her grip.

“My sister said it belonged to Elliot.”

“It did.”

Adrian paused.

“But Elliot wasn’t the only person connected to it.”

Desmond stared.

“What does that mean?”

Adrian walked slowly into the room.

“I spent twenty years trying to keep one secret hidden.”

His eyes moved toward Desmond.

“But I never thought I would have to reveal it like this.”

Desmond’s patience disappeared.

“Speak.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Elliot was working for you.”

The words hit.

Desmond froze.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“He was my enemy.”

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”

Desmond remembered Elliot.

A quiet man.

A man who always stayed away from conflict.

A man who disappeared before Desmond could understand why.

“You’re lying.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

He looked at Raina.

“Elliot was investigating the people inside this family.”

Raina’s expression changed.

“My sister knew?”

“She found out.”

“Found out what?”

Adrian looked at Desmond.

“The truth about who was trying to destroy you.”

The hallway became silent.

Desmond felt his anger turn into something else.

A cold realization.

“Who?”

Adrian looked toward the dark corridor.

Like he was afraid someone might hear.

“Your father.”

Nobody moved.

Desmond’s expression hardened.

“My father died ten years ago.”

“Yes.”

Adrian nodded.

“But the damage he caused happened long before that.”

Desmond looked at him.

“You’re blaming a dead man?”

“I’m telling you the person who started this was never the person you thought.”

Raina stepped closer.

“What happened to Maeve?”

Adrian looked at her.

For the first time, his expression broke.

“She tried to expose them.”

“Who?”

Adrian hesitated.

That hesitation made Desmond angry.

“Who?”

Adrian finally answered.

“The Hail family.”

The words felt impossible.

Because Desmond had spent his entire life protecting that name.

Building it.

Defending it.

And now the person who returned from the dead was telling him it was the thing that destroyed the woman he loved.

Raina shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice became quiet.

“My sister trusted someone.”

Adrian looked at her.

“She trusted you.”

Raina turned toward Desmond.

The accusation was silent.

But he felt it.

Desmond looked away.

Because he had no answer.

He had spent years believing he was protecting Maeve’s memory.

But what if he had only protected the lie?

“What happened after she found out?”

Adrian’s face became serious.

“Maeve tried to leave.”

“With Elliot?”

“Yes.”

“And Teddy?”

Adrian looked at the child.

“Yes.”

Raina froze.

“What?”

The room stopped.

Desmond looked at Adrian.

“What did you say?”

Adrian took a breath.

“Teddy was born because of the truth Maeve discovered.”

Raina’s face went pale.

“No.”

Adrian looked at her gently.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

She stepped back.

“You don’t get to come here after eighteen years and tell me things about my family.”

Her voice cracked.

“You don’t know what I lost.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“You’re right.”

A pause.

“I don’t.”

He looked at Desmond.

“But he does.”

Desmond felt his chest tighten.

“What are you saying?”

Adrian reached inside his coat.

Immediately, Desmond raised his weapon.

Adrian stopped.

Slowly, he pulled out a small envelope.

Old.

Damaged.

With a familiar handwriting.

Maeve’s handwriting.

Desmond stared.

“No.”

Adrian held it out.

“She wrote this the night before she disappeared.”

Desmond did not move.

“Why give it to me now?”

“Because she told me not to.”

That answer confused him.

Adrian looked at Raina.

“She said only give this to Desmond when the child was old enough to know the truth.”

Raina looked at Teddy.

Her face changed.

Fear.

Confusion.

Hope.

Everything at once.

Desmond took the envelope.

His hands felt heavier than they should.

He opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of Maeve.

Elliot.

A baby.

And another person standing beside them.

A person Desmond recognized immediately.

His blood went cold.

Because the person in the picture was someone he had trusted his entire life.

Someone who had stood beside him.

Someone who had cried at Maeve’s funeral.

Someone who had helped him bury the truth.

Desmond turned the photo around.

And whispered the name.

“Impossible.”

Adrian watched him.

“No.”

His voice was quiet.

“It was never impossible.”

Desmond looked at the photograph again.

Because written on the back were six words.

May you like

Six words that changed everything.

“Ask him why he killed Maeve.”
