Chapter 5 - The Person Behind The Betrayal

The name appeared on Michael's phone.

And for a moment, I couldn't breathe.

Because it wasn't Daniel.

It wasn't Rachel.

It wasn't someone I expected.

It was someone who had been part of my life long before this nightmare began.

Michael looked at me.

"Claire..."

I shook my head.

"No."

I couldn't accept it.

I couldn't even say the name out loud.

Because sometimes seeing something written was worse than hearing it.

The message from Rachel remained on the screen.

"Claire was never the target."

Then underneath it:

"Ask Michael who he really works for."

I looked at Michael.

The man sitting across from me.

The man who had held my hand when I was falling apart.

The man who told me he understood betrayal.

The man who suggested revenge.

My heart started racing.

"What does that mean?"

Michael didn't answer immediately.

And that silence hurt more than anything.

"Michael."

He looked away.

That was when I knew.

There was something he wasn't telling me.

"Tell me."

He took a deep breath.

"Claire, I swear I didn't know this would happen."

My stomach tightened.

"Didn't know what would happen?"

He rubbed his hands together.

A nervous habit.

One I had noticed before.

But never questioned.

"I need to explain something."

I crossed my arms.

"Please do."

Michael looked at the documents scattered across my table.

"The company Daniel worked with..."

"What about it?"

"It's connected to mine."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"I wasn't just Rachel's husband."

I waited.

"Michael."

He looked directly at me.

"I was investigating Daniel."

The room became silent.

I felt like I had been hit.

"Investigating?"

He nodded.

"For what?"

Michael hesitated.

Then he said:

"Financial fraud."

I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn't process another impossible thing.

"My husband cheated on me, disappeared, and now you're telling me he was involved in fraud?"

"I know how it sounds."

"It sounds like everyone around me knew something except me."

Michael lowered his eyes.

And that hurt.

Because it was true.

Daniel knew.

Rachel knew.

Michael knew.

Everyone knew something.

Except me.

The person whose life was being destroyed.

I stood up.

"I need you to leave."

Michael looked at me.

"Claire."

"No."

My voice shook.

"But you need to understand something."

I pointed toward the door.

"I spent six years trusting someone who lied to my face every day."

I swallowed.

"I am not going to do that again."

Michael didn't argue.

He slowly stood.

But before he left, he stopped.

"There is something you need to know."

I didn't answer.

"Daniel didn't leave because he wanted a new life."

I looked at him.

"He left because someone forced him."

I froze.

"What?"

Michael pulled something from his jacket.

A small flash drive.

He placed it on the table.

"That contains the information I found."

I stared at it.

"Why give it to me?"

"Because whether you believe me or not, you are involved now."

Then he walked out.

I didn't move for several minutes.

I just stared at the flash drive.

A tiny piece of plastic.

A thing that could explain everything.

Or destroy whatever was left of my life.

Eventually, I picked it up.

I opened my laptop.

I almost didn't.

Part of me wanted to throw it away.

Because ignorance was easier.

Before Daniel left, I had a life.

A simple life.

A husband.

A marriage.

A future.

The truth had already taken all of that.

What else could it take?

I plugged it in.

One folder appeared.

The title made my hands go cold.

"PROJECT BENNETT."

I stared.

My last name.

Not Daniel's.

Mine.

I clicked.

Inside were files.

Photos.

Emails.

Contracts.

And one video.

The date was six months earlier.

I clicked play.

The screen showed Daniel.

Sitting alone.

Looking exhausted.

Not like the man from the airport photo.

Not like the man who abandoned me.

Like someone who was afraid.

He looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this, something went wrong."

My heart stopped.

Daniel continued.

"I don't know who will find this first."

He paused.

Then whispered:

"Claire, if you are seeing this, I'm sorry."

I covered my mouth.

Because hearing his voice was almost painful.

"I should have told you everything."

The video shook slightly.

Like he was recording it secretly.

"There are people watching me."

I leaned closer.

"Daniel..."

He looked behind him.

Then back at the camera.

"Rachel isn't the person you think she is."

I froze.

The video continued.

"She got involved because she was trying to protect Michael."

My eyes widened.

Michael.

Again.

Everything came back to him.

Daniel took a deep breath.

"But the person controlling everything..."

The video suddenly glitched.

The screen went black.

I waited.

Nothing.

Then a new file appeared.

A file that wasn't there before.

I clicked it.

It was a photograph.

A recent photograph.

Taken outside my apartment.

My blood ran cold.

Because in the picture...

I saw Michael standing near my building.

Before he ever met me.

I closed the laptop.

No.

I couldn't think.

I couldn't breathe.

Every answer created three more questions.

Was Michael helping me?

Or was he using me?

Was our fake relationship really an accident?

Or was I part of a plan from the beginning?

My phone rang.

I looked down.

Unknown number.

I almost ignored it.

But then I remembered Rachel.

I answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a voice spoke.

Not Rachel.

Not Daniel.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Controlled.

"Claire Bennett."

My body went still.

"Who is this?"

The man ignored my question.

"You opened the drive."

I looked at the flash drive on the table.

My blood turned cold.

"How do you know that?"

A quiet laugh.

"You really thought Daniel was the person hiding secrets from you?"

I stood up.

"Who are you?"

The voice became quieter.

"The person who has been watching you since before your husband left."

I felt my hand tighten around the phone.

Then he said:

"Ask Michael why he was assigned to you."

The call ended.

I stood there.

Completely frozen.

Because suddenly the question wasn't whether Michael had lied to me.

It was why he had found me so quickly.

My laptop screen turned back on by itself.

A new message appeared on the screen.

Three words.

May you like

"HE KNOWS YOU."

And then the apartment door handle started moving.
