Chapter 5 - The Second Recording

The man's name was Thomas Reed.

He had been a private investigator for twenty-seven years.

My father hired him eight months before he died.

Thomas didn't come inside.

He asked me to meet him somewhere neutral.

An hour later, Natalie, Grace, Lily and I sat in a private conference room at Rachel's law office.

Thomas placed the envelope on the table.

"Your father gave me instructions."

Rachel examined the seal.

It had never been opened.

My name was written across it.

I opened it myself.

Inside was a letter.

Sarah,

If Thomas gives you this, then circumstances have forced you to ask questions I hoped you would never need to ask.

I read slowly.

Dad explained that he had discovered Amanda contacting professionals about his trust.

At first, he assumed Ethan didn't know.

Then Thomas documented meetings between them.

Dad confronted Ethan privately.

Ethan apologized.

Promised to stop.

Dad wanted to believe him.

He didn't.

So he changed the trust.

That was the secret.

"What change?" I asked Rachel.

She frowned.

"I handled the estate, but Robert used another firm for the final amendment."

Thomas nodded.

"Exactly."

He handed Rachel a second document.

The amendment made one fact devastatingly clear.

No spouse.

No alternate guardian.

No outside administrator could exercise Lily's beneficiary voting rights.

Not Ethan.

Not Amanda.

Nobody.

Until Lily became an adult, those rights remained under an independent fiduciary.

All of Amanda's planning had been useless from the beginning.

"She didn't know?" I asked.

Thomas shook his head.

"Your father deliberately kept the final amendment private."

I leaned back.

Months of manipulation.

Secret recordings.

Fake concern.

Attempts to isolate Grace.

All for power they could never obtain.

But Thomas wasn't finished.

"Your father suspected they might try to pressure you personally."

He placed a small drive on the table.

"That's why he made this."

Another recording.

Dad sat in his study.

This time he addressed me directly.

He told me he loved me.

He told me he didn't want suspicion to poison my marriage.

And then he said something I never expected.

"If Ethan chooses you over ambition, forgive him if you can. If he chooses ambition over you, protect yourself without becoming cruel."

I cried then.

Quietly.

Natalie held my hand.

Dad had known Ethan's weakness.

But he hadn't told me to hate him.

He had simply made sure Ethan couldn't take what wasn't his.

Thomas left us with the documents.

Rachel began preparing legal notices immediately.

I wasn't interested in revenge.

I wanted boundaries.

Access revoked.

Passwords changed.

Evidence preserved.

Independent counsel.

And Lily protected from becoming leverage in anybody's financial dispute.

That evening, Natalie took us home with her.

Grace stayed too.

For the first time since the bathroom, silence felt safe.

Lily slept beside me.

At 11:43 p.m., Ethan called.

I didn't answer.

He called again.

Then texted.

I FOUND SOMETHING MOM NEVER TOLD ME.

I stared at the message.

Another followed.

I'M NOT ASKING YOU TO COME BACK. JUST WATCH WHAT I SENT.

An attachment appeared.

Video.

I hesitated.

Then opened it.

Amanda was in the bathroom.

The footage had been recorded the previous evening.

She was speaking to someone on speakerphone.

A woman's voice.

Claire.

Amanda said:

"Tomorrow Grace will be upstairs at ten."

Claire answered:

"Don't involve the baby."

Amanda:

"I'm not involving anyone. Grace will walk in, overreact, and we'll finally have proof she creates chaos."

Claire:

"Amanda, I'm serious."

Then Amanda said the sentence that changed the entire meaning of what had happened.

"Sarah will be downstairs. Ethan will make sure of it."

I paused.

Ethan had asked me to help him in the kitchen that morning.

He had kept me downstairs.

Had he known?

The video continued.

Claire said:

"Does Ethan know what you're planning?"

Amanda laughed.

"He knows enough."

Not yes.

Not no.

Enough.

Then someone entered the bathroom.

Amanda looked up.

"Ethan."

My husband stepped into frame.

He saw the phone.

"Why are you recording?"

Amanda immediately ended the video.

I sat frozen.

That was why Ethan's voice appeared on the later recording.

He had been there.

But did he know the full plan?

My phone rang.

Ethan.

This time I answered.

"What did you know?"

His breathing was uneven.

"I knew Mom wanted footage of Grace being confrontational."

"Did you know Lily would be in the bathtub?"

"No."

"Did you know your mother planned to leave her unattended?"

"No."

"Why should I believe you?"

"You shouldn't."

The answer surprised me.

"I've lied enough that you shouldn't believe anything without proof."

I said nothing.

He continued.

"I helped Mom build the case against you."

Hearing him admit it hurt more than discovering it.

"I told myself it wasn't really against you. I thought if we changed control of the trust, we'd eventually fix everything."

"You secretly recorded me crying."

"I know."

"You tried to make exhaustion look like instability."

"I know."

"You tried to fire the woman who protected our daughter."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me."

"Good."

"I'm giving Rachel everything."

I closed my eyes.

"Why?"

"Because Mom crossed a line."

I nearly shouted.

"You crossed it months ago."

"I know."

Silence.

Then he said:

"There's another camera."

I opened my eyes.

"What?"

"Mom didn't know about it."

"Where?"

"Your father's study."

My pulse accelerated.

"That house was sold."

"No. Your father's private office furniture went into storage."

"What camera?"

"The one Thomas installed."

I sat upright.

"How do you know?"

"Because I found Thomas's invoice in Dad's archive."

My father wasn't Ethan's dad.

Yet Ethan had called him Dad.

That hurt too.

"Where's the storage unit?"

"I sent Rachel the address."

"Don't go there."

"I already did."

"Ethan."

"I found the desk."

My skin prickled.

"And?"

"The envelope from the old recording isn't there."

"Someone took it."

"Yes."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

Then I heard something behind him.

A metallic sound.

"Ethan?"

He stopped talking.

Another sound.

A door.

"Where are you?"

"The storage unit."

"You're there now?"

"Yes."

"Leave."

"Sarah—"

"Leave now."

His breathing changed.

Someone was inside the storage building with him.

"Ethan?"

He whispered:

"Someone just locked the outer door."

Then another voice came through the phone.

A woman's voice.

Amanda.

May you like

"Hang up, Ethan."

The call ended.
