Chapter 6 - The Last Receipt

They did not tell Caterina.
They did not tell Vittorio.
They told Rachel only part of the truth.
Hannah hated that immediately.
Secrets had created this entire disaster.
But Luca insisted.
“If Marco has someone inside federal protection, we don't know who.”
Rachel stared at him.
“You think it's one of my people?”
“I think trusting blindly is what got us here.”
She didn't like it.
She also couldn't argue.
The old Moretti house stood forty miles west of Chicago.
Vacant for years.
Luca's father once used it for private meetings.
Hannah expected Luca to go alone.
Instead she built a plan around the receipts.
Every time someone followed Luca to Millie's, Hannah had recorded arrival times, vehicle descriptions, table numbers, and license plates.
She compared them.
One plate appeared three times.
A silver sedan.
Once when Maria came.
Once when Adrian entered.
Once the night Luca returned.
Rachel ran the registration.
Federal fleet.
Hannah's stomach turned.
The car was assigned to Agent Thomas Reed.
A member of Elena's current protective detail.
Rachel went pale.
“Reed has been with us eight years.”
“So was Marco,” Luca said.
They moved immediately.
But Reed was gone.
So was his vehicle.
Elena and Sofia remained safe.
The blanket had been stolen from luggage.
That was the good news.
The bad news was Reed knew the safe-house protocols.
And Marco had chosen midnight at the Moretti estate.
Luca went.
Not alone.
Hannah rode in the surveillance vehicle with Rachel.
“You don't need to be here,” Rachel said.
“I know.”
“You're a waitress.”
“I've been told.”
“You could go home.”
Hannah looked at the stack of receipts in her hand.
“No.”
Luca entered the estate at 11:58.
Cameras hidden on his clothing transmitted everything.
Dust.
Dark hallways.
Old portraits.
A dining room.
Marco sat alone at the long table.
“Right on time.”
Luca remained standing.
“You don't have Sofia.”
Marco smiled.
“No.”
“Then this ends badly for you.”
“For one of us.”
“Why?”
Marco leaned back.
“Why what?”
“Why betray me?”
“You still think this is personal.”
“It became personal when you touched my family.”
Marco's expression hardened.
“Your father built something people feared. You inherited it and apologized for existing.”
“I changed it.”
“You destroyed it.”
“I saved what was worth saving.”
Marco slammed his palm against the table.
“You made us weak.”
Luca smiled.
“No.”
He stepped closer.
“I made men like you unnecessary.”
That landed.
Marco stood.
A gun appeared.
Rachel whispered into her radio.
“Hold.”
Hannah watched the monitor.
Something bothered her.
The dining room.
The angle.
Marco was facing Luca.
But his eyes kept moving toward the doorway behind him.
Waiting.
For someone.
Hannah studied the receipts.
Adrian.
Adrian always arrived before Marco.
Always.
At the diner, Adrian appeared before the breach.
At St. Agnes, Adrian was already connected to Kessler.
Hannah looked at the estate floor plan.
“There.”
Rachel turned.
“What?”
“Service corridor behind the dining room.”
The tactical team shifted.
Seconds later they found Adrian with a rifle positioned behind the wall.
He was supposed to kill Luca once Marco distracted him.
Agents moved.
Adrian fired.
The dining room erupted.
Marco dove behind the table.
Luca overturned a chair.
Glass shattered.
Hannah lost the video feed.
“Luca?”
Nothing.
Rachel ordered entry.
Gunfire echoed through the radio.
Then silence.
The feed returned.
Marco lay injured.
Adrian was dead.
Luca stood near the doorway.
Alive.
Hannah released a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Then Marco laughed.
Luca approached him.
“What?”
“You think you won?”
“Yes.”
Marco coughed.
“You still don't know what Elena hid.”
Luca froze.
“What?”
“The evidence you found was never the real problem.”
Hannah leaned closer to the monitor.
Marco smiled.
“Ask your wife who Sofia's godfather was supposed to be.”
Luca's face changed.
“Who?”
Marco whispered a name.
The audio cut out.
“What did he say?” Hannah demanded.
Rachel shook her head.
“Interference.”
Luca crouched.
“Say it again.”
Marco laughed.
Then agents pulled Luca away.
The arrest ended the immediate threat.
Marco survived.
Reed was captured later that morning.
Kessler was arrested attempting to cross into Canada.
Vittorio's cooperation exposed dozens of accounts.
It should have been finished.
But Luca didn't return to Millie's.
Not the next night.
Not the night after.
Hannah kept working.
She kept the receipts.
Three days later, Elena called.
“I need to see you.”
They met at Millie's before opening.
Elena looked exhausted but lighter.
Sofia slept in a carrier beside her.
“What did Marco mean?” Hannah asked.
Elena looked at the baby.
“Before everything happened, Luca and I chose someone to become Sofia's godfather.”
“Marco?”
“No.”
“Vittorio?”
“No.”
“Who?”
Elena swallowed.
“Samuel Kessler.”
Hannah stared.
“The doctor?”
“He was an old family friend. Before we knew what he was doing.”
“Why does that matter?”
“Because godparents in Luca's family aren't ceremonial.”
Elena took out a folder.
“Luca's father created a trust.”
A massive one.
Properties.
Businesses.
Accounts.
If Luca died before Sofia turned eighteen, control passed to a guardian approved by both parents.
Originally Kessler.
Elena revoked the choice before Sofia was born.
“But someone altered the document,” she said.
“Kessler?”
“Maybe.”
Hannah understood.
The entire operation wasn't only about drugs.
It was about succession.
If Luca died, the person controlling Sofia could gain access to enormous legitimate assets.
“Does Luca know?”
“Not yet.”
“Why not?”
“Because the final trust document is missing.”
Hannah looked toward the cash register.
Receipts.
Times.
Records.
Proof.
“What if it isn't missing?”
Elena frowned.
Hannah went to booth seven.
She looked beneath the table.
Nothing.
Then she remembered the very first receipt.
Four digits.
Not merely a time.
A code.
Hannah retrieved the original receipt from her safe deposit envelope.
She held it toward the light.
There were tiny puncture marks near the edge.
Four.
Two.
Three.
Seven.
A pattern.
She turned toward the old jukebox near the restrooms.
It had been broken for years.
Its service panel required four digits.
Hannah typed 0237.
The lock clicked.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
Elena covered her mouth.
Hannah pulled it free.
Across the front were three handwritten words.
FOR LUCA ONLY.
The bell above Millie's front door rang.
They turned.
Luca stood in the doorway.
May you like
Behind him was Dr. Samuel Kessler.
And Kessler was holding a gun.
