Chapter 2 - THE DIRT UNDER THE MARBLE

The war did not take long to turn vicious.
Within seventy-two hours of the will reading, Clara’s life became a living nightmare. Tabloids published leaked stories framing her as a "predatory gold-digger nurse" who took advantage of a dying American industrialist. Local news crews swarmed the grand iron gates of Oakridge Manor, flashing cameras through her windshield every time she tried to buy groceries. Her bank accounts were temporarily frozen due to an emergency injunction filed by Julian’s legal team, leaving her struggling to buy basic supplies.
When legal blockades weren't moving fast enough, Julian and Eleanor turned to darker methods.
One rain-slicked Tuesday evening, as Clara returned to the manor after meeting with her own pro-bono defense attorney, she found the front double doors kicked open. The historic marble foyer was completely ransacked. Antique vases were shattered across the floor, couch cushions were slashed open, and Arthur’s private study looked like a tornado had ripped through it. Desk drawers were ripped from their mountings, and papers were scattered everywhere.
Standing in the middle of the destruction was Julian, soaking wet from the storm, holding an iron crowbar. His eyes were bloodshot, frantic, and wild.
"Where is it?!" Julian roared, dropping the crowbar with a deafening CLANG against the marble. He marched toward Clara, his fists clenched. "Where did he hide the ledgers, Clara?! I know what my father did before he died! I know he didn't just leave you the real estate—he hid the off-shore access keys!"
Clara backed up against the doorframe, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Julian, you're breaking the law! The police are on their way right now!"
"Call them! Call the national guard for all I care!" Eleanor walked out from the shadowed hallway, her hair disheveled, clutching an empty metal lockbox. "Our father wasn't a saint, Clara! He was a liar! He laundered forty million dollars through shell companies in the Caymans twenty years ago, and Julian and I signed those corporate tax filings thinking they were standard distributions! If those original records hit the IRS, Julian and I don't just lose our inheritance—we go to federal prison for grand fraud!"
Clara froze. The air in the ruined foyer grew ice-cold.
Suddenly, everything made sense. The overwhelming desperation. The endless lawsuits. The frantic break-in. Julian and Eleanor weren't fighting for Oakridge Manor out of pride or filial love. They were fighting out of absolute, blind terror. Arthur Vance hadn't just disinherited his children to punish them for their emotional neglect—he had set a legal landmine that threatened to expose their dark corporate secrets to the entire world.
"You... you used his company to cover your own illegal debts," Clara whispered, realization dawning on her face. "He knew, didn't he? That's why he kept calling his accountants during his final month. He discovered what you two were doing behind his back while he was sick."
"He was an senile old fool who got soft in his old age!" Julian snarled, taking another step forward, his shadow looming large over Clara under the dim foyer light. "He was going to turn us in! He wanted to burn his own bloodline to the ground just to feel like a martyr! Hand over the keys to the master safe, Clara, or I swear to God you won't walk out of this house alive."
"Julian, stop!" Eleanor yelled, a flicker of panic entering her voice as she looked at her brother's unhinged expression. "We just need the documents! Don't do something stupid!"
"She knows too much, Eleanor!" Julian snapped back, his knuckles white. "She’s been plotting this with him from the start!"
Clara reached slowly into her cardigan pocket. Julian braced himself, expecting a key or a phone. Instead, Clara pulled out a small, heavy silver USB drive and held it up between two fingers.
"Looking for this?" Clara said, her voice dropping to a icy, steady pitch that startled both siblings.
Julian lunged forward, his hands reaching out to grab it, but Clara stepped back into the doorway, holding the drive tightly in her fist.
"This drive doesn't contain the Cayman ledgers," Clara said, her eyes blazing with fierce determination. "It contains Arthur’s final video confession, along with the complete forensic audit of the Vance Corporation that he had his private investigators complete three weeks before he passed away. And it’s set to automatically upload to the Department of Justice’s portal at midnight tonight unless a secure encryption key is entered."
Julian stopped dead in his tracks. His face drained of all color, going as pale as a bedsheet.
"You're lying," he whispered, though his shaky breath betrayed his utter terror.

"Try me," Clara replied coldly. "Your father loved you both once. He spent his final years hoping you would come through that door and apologize—not for the money, but for abandoning him. But he knew who you really were. He left me this estate to protect me, but he left me this drive to protect the truth. Now, both of you step out of my house before I press send right now."
Eleanor collapsed against the wall, covering her face as she sobbed in pure defeat. Julian stood frozen, looking at Clara not as a weak, helpless nurse, but as the one person who held his entire future, freedom, and fate in the palm of her hand.
