Chapter 6 - The Sin Between Brothers

Nora stared at Adrian.

"Your father?"

Adrian nodded.

The sirens outside seemed to fade beneath the weight of that confession.

Antonio Moretti had not died from illness as newspapers reported.

He had been murdered.

By his own son.

Or so Adrian believed.

"I didn't know he was cooperating with federal agents," Adrian said.

"Would that have changed anything?" Nora asked.

"Yes."

Eli shook his head.

"You can't know that."

Adrian looked at him.

"I know what I became after."

Nora sensed years of pain between them.

Federal agents were securing the warehouse.

Victor had been taken away in handcuffs, wounded but alive.

Celeste sat on a crate, crying silently after learning her daughter had been moved to protective custody.

For the first time all night, nobody was actively trying to kill them.

Yet the truth felt no safer.

Adrian explained.

Six years earlier, Antonio Moretti had begun secretly dismantling the criminal side of the family's empire.

He kept evidence.

Names.

Accounts.

Routes.

He planned to trade everything for reduced sentences and protection for his sons.

Victor discovered enough to become suspicious.

Then he manipulated Adrian.

He showed him fabricated records suggesting Antonio planned to have Adrian arrested while escaping prosecution himself.

"I was twenty-nine," Adrian said.

"Old enough to know better."

Eli's voice was bitter.

Adrian accepted it.

"Yes."

Nora watched him.

No excuses.

That mattered.

Not enough to erase what he'd done.

But it mattered.

Adrian continued.

Victor told him Antonio was meeting an enemy at a warehouse.

Adrian ordered one of his men to stop him.

"Stop him?" Nora asked.

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I knew what that meant."

Eli looked away.

Antonio died that night.

Adrian inherited the organization.

Victor became his trusted adviser.

For years Adrian believed his father had betrayed him.

Then Elias found documents proving the opposite.

"You discovered Victor arranged it," Nora said.

Eli nodded.

"And you didn't tell Adrian?"

"I tried."

Adrian looked at him.

"Not hard enough."

"I came to your office."

"You accused Victor without evidence."

"I told you Dad was an informant."

"And I thought you were trying to destroy everything."

"You threw me out."

Adrian's face hardened with shame.

"Yes."

Eli continued.

"Two days later, somebody broke into my apartment. I realized Victor knew I'd found the records."

"So you became Eli Reyes," Nora whispered.

"Yes."

"And met me."

His expression softened.

"That wasn't part of any plan."

"Good answer."

A tiny smile appeared.

Then disappeared.

Nora's eyes filled.

"Why didn't you tell me after we married?"

"Because every day I waited made it harder."

"That's cowardice."

"I know."

"You let me build a life with somebody who didn't exist."

"I existed."

"Not completely."

Eli lowered his eyes.

"No."

Nora moved away from him.

He let her.

She needed that too.

Adrian stood near a window.

Dawn was beginning over Boston Harbor.

Nora approached him.

"Did you know Eli was married?"

"No."

"Would you have hurt us?"

"No."

"Would Victor?"

"Yes."

She nodded.

At least that part was clear.

A federal agent entered.

Special Agent Rachel Klein.

Forties.

Direct.

Exhausted.

She looked at Adrian.

"We need statements."

"You'll get them."

"We also need Ledger Nine."

Adrian gestured toward Eli.

"Ask the man who has been talking to you."

Nora looked sharply at her husband.

"You've been working with federal agents?"

Eli nodded.

"For months."

"While pretending to be dead."

"Yes."

Her laugh was empty.

"Anything else?"

Eli hesitated.

Nora pointed at him.

"Do not hesitate."

"I'm in witness protection."

She closed her eyes.

"Of course you are."

Agent Klein stepped forward.

"The decision to remain separated from you was ours."

Nora stared at her.

"Then your decision was cruel."

"It kept you alive."

"You don't know that."

"We stopped two attempts to locate Elias through you."

Nora faltered.

"Two?"

"Victor's people monitored your medical appointments."

Her hand moved to her belly.

"They knew about the baby?"

"Yes."

Nora felt nauseous.

Klein continued.

"We wanted Elias to remain legally dead until Victor's network was dismantled."

"And tonight?"

"Tonight changed everything."

"Because of the watch."

"Because Celeste hit you."

Nora almost laughed.

"That's what broke a federal operation?"

"Her reaction exposed that Victor knew the watch had resurfaced. Elias contacted us immediately."

Nora looked toward Celeste.

The woman who had slapped her had accidentally accelerated the collapse of a criminal empire.

Life had a cruel sense of humor.

"Ledger Nine," Nora said. "Where is it?"

Eli looked at Adrian.

"With Dad."

Adrian frowned.

"He's dead."

"Exactly."

They drove to the Moretti family crypt under federal escort.

Nora stayed because she refused to be excluded from another secret.

Antonio Moretti's tomb was opened legally that afternoon.

Inside the burial compartment was no ledger.

Only a wooden box.

Adrian removed it.

Inside lay a Bible.

A photograph of Adrian and Elias as children.

And a brass key.

Eli looked at the key.

"Safety deposit."

Adrian nodded.

Their father had once used a private bank in Boston.

The key opened box 901.

Inside sat Ledger Nine.

Two thick handwritten books.

Twenty years of crimes.

Victor's handwriting appeared repeatedly.

So did names belonging to officials, businessmen, police officers, and criminal associates.

Adrian turned pages slowly.

Then stopped.

His own name appeared.

Nora saw the fear in his eyes.

"What?"

He handed the book to Agent Klein.

The entry described Antonio's planned meeting with federal investigators.

Another entry described Victor's plan to deceive Adrian.

Then a final notation:

A does not know the target is his father. V intends to make son responsible.

Adrian gripped the table.

Eli stepped beside him.

"Victor manipulated you."

"I still gave the order."

"You didn't know."

"I still gave it."

Eli looked at his brother for a long time.

Then said quietly, "And you've spent six years punishing yourself."

Adrian's eyes became wet.

"I killed Dad."

"No. Victor did."

"I made it possible."

"Then help undo what he built."

That became Adrian's decision.

He turned over every document.

Every account.

Every illegal route.

Every name.

Including evidence against himself.

Agent Klein warned him.

"You understand you may face charges."

"Yes."

"You could go to prison."

"Yes."

Eli stared at his brother.

Adrian gave him a sad smile.

"Somebody should've told the truth years ago."

Nora understood then why Eli had once loved him.

Weeks passed.

Victor's organization collapsed quickly after Ledger Nine became evidence.

Corrupt officers were arrested.

Shipping executives were indicted.

Celeste entered witness protection with her daughter after agreeing to testify.

She sent Nora a handwritten apology.

Nora did not forgive her.

Not yet.

Maybe never.

But she kept the letter.

Adrian was charged with several offenses connected to his past, though the evidence proving Victor's manipulation affected the case.

He pleaded guilty to financial crimes and obstruction.

The homicide investigation remained complicated.

Nora saw him one final time before sentencing.

He stood outside the courthouse beside Eli.

"You look different without ten armed men," Nora said.

Adrian smiled.

"Cheaper too."

She handed him something.

The watch.

He stared.

"No."

"It belongs to your family."

"It belongs to Elias."

"Eli says it belongs to our daughter."

Adrian looked at her belly.

"You kept the microfilm?"

"Federal agents did."

"Good."

He closed the watch in his palm.

Then handed it back.

"Give it to her when she's old enough."

Nora hesitated.

"She should know what happened?"

"She should know where she came from."

Eli joined them.

Adrian looked at his brother.

"Take care of them."

Eli nodded.

"I will."

Nora raised an eyebrow.

"You'd better."

Adrian laughed softly.

Then officers led him inside.

Nora watched until he disappeared.

She thought that was the end of the Moretti secrets.

She was wrong.

That evening, she and Eli returned to their apartment together for the first time in seven months.

His shoes sat beside hers.

His toothbrush returned to the bathroom.

Everything felt familiar.

Everything felt impossible.

Nora stood in their bedroom.

"You sleep on the couch."

Eli nodded.

"Fair."

"For how long?"

"As long as I decide."

"Fair."

She almost smiled.

Then she noticed something beneath her pillow.

A sealed envelope.

Neither she nor Eli had placed it there.

Nora froze.

"Eli."

He stepped closer.

The envelope carried Antonio Moretti's handwriting.

Across the front were four words.

FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER, WHEN SAFE.

Eli stared at it.

"That's impossible."

Nora slowly opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

She looked at it.

Her face went white.

May you like

Because the woman standing beside Antonio Moretti in the picture was someone Nora had known her entire life.

Her own mother.
