Chapter 4 - Box 317

Matteo spun around.
Nobody was there.
Nora stared at the empty doorway.
The photograph on his phone had been taken less than ten feet away.
“There's another camera.”
Matteo searched.
John pointed toward the ceiling.
A smoke detector.
Matteo tore it down.
Inside was a lens.
“Get security.”
Within minutes, the room filled with guards.
Nora hated every second.
More armed men did not make her feel safer anymore.
Not when one of them might be working for Victor.
Matteo apparently thought the same thing.
He dismissed everyone except a man named Luca, his oldest friend.
“We go to the bank ourselves,” Matteo said.
“No team?”
“No.”
Nora stared.
“You're taking a pregnant maid into an abandoned Mafia bank without security?”
“You're not going.”
She laughed.
“Then neither are you.”
“This isn't negotiation.”
“It became one when the message used my mother's name.”
John tapped the wheelchair.
He pointed at himself.
“No,” Matteo said immediately.
John glared.
Nora almost smiled.
“You inherited that expression.”
Matteo ignored her.
Two hours later, all three left through an underground garage.
Luca drove.
The old Moretti bank stood seventy miles south, hidden behind the facade of a private records company.
Box 317 was in the basement.
The key fit.
Inside was a single flash drive.
And a letter.
Nora recognized her mother's handwriting immediately.
She unfolded it.
Nora,
If John gives you this, then I ran out of time.
Nora stopped.
Her eyes blurred.
Matteo waited silently.
She continued.
Victor Moretti has been stealing from his brother for years, but money isn't his real business. He sells information—names, witnesses, police sources, anyone who trusts the Morettis to keep them safe.
I found the accounts.
John believes he can stop him.
I don't.
If Victor discovers I copied the records, he'll come for me.
And eventually, he may come for you.
Nora lowered the letter.
Her hands trembled.
“There’s more,” Matteo said gently.
She read.
One day, someone may tell you that John Moretti was a dangerous man.
They're right.
But dangerous and evil are not always the same thing.
When I asked him to protect you, he promised.
Trust the promise.
Not the name.
Nora closed her eyes.
Her mother had known.
Everything.
John reached for her hand.
She gave it to him.
“You tried.”
His eyes filled.
“You kept your promise.”
John shook his head.
“I'm alive.”
He looked down.
Nora understood.
Her mother wasn't.
“You couldn't save everyone.”
John's face crumpled.
It was the first time she saw him cry openly.
Nora leaned down and hugged him.
Matteo turned away.
He had spent years believing his father incapable of emotion.
Now a young woman who barely knew him was holding him while he mourned someone Matteo had never known existed.
Luca inserted the flash drive into an offline laptop.
Files appeared.
Accounts.
Names.
Payments.
Photographs.
Then one folder.
BENNETT.
Nora opened it.
The first document was Brody's photograph.
Her stomach dropped.
“No.”
Payments had been made to him for almost two years.
“Brody worked for Victor before he met me.”
Matteo read the records.
“Yes.”
Nora felt physically ill.
“He didn't meet me by accident.”
“No.”
“Our relationship…”
She couldn't finish.
Matteo closed the laptop halfway.
“Nora.”
“My baby.”
His eyes met hers.
“Whatever Brody did, Lily is innocent.”
“I know.”
But Nora's tears came anyway.
She remembered the restaurant where Brody had first approached her.
The flowers.
The jokes.
The proposal he had almost made.
Had any of it been real?
John suddenly pointed at the screen.
Another payment.
Dated six months earlier.
PURPOSE: PATERNITY ACCESS.
Nora froze.
“What does that mean?”
Matteo didn't answer.
Luca opened the associated file.
A scanned medical form appeared.
Nora recognized the clinic.
Her prenatal clinic.
Her bloodwork.
Someone had accessed it.
“Why?”
Matteo scrolled.
A DNA request.
Incomplete.
The listed comparison sample belonged to—
Matteo stopped.
Nora leaned closer.
JOHN MORETTI.
Nobody moved.
Nora looked at John.
Then Matteo.
“This says someone wanted to compare my baby's DNA to your father.”
Matteo's face had gone white.
John began shaking his head violently.
“You didn't request it?”
He shook his head.
“Then Victor did.”
Luca opened another file.
A family tree.
Nora's mother.
Sarah Bennett.
Beside her name was another name.
ANTHONY MORETTI.
Matteo whispered, “My older brother.”
Nora looked at him.
“You have a brother?”
“Had.”
“What happened?”
“He died twenty-four years ago.”
Nora was twenty-three.
The arithmetic arrived before anyone spoke.
“No.”
John closed his eyes.
Nora backed away.
“No.”
Matteo stared at the family tree.
Anthony Moretti.
Sarah Bennett.
A line connected them.
At the bottom:
NORA BENNETT.
Nora covered her mouth.
John reached toward her.
She stepped away.
“You knew?”
His face answered.
“You knew who I was?”
He nodded.
“From the beginning?”
Another nod.
Nora began crying.
“You let me scrub floors in your house.”
John flinched.
Matteo looked at him.
“Dad.”
John tried to speak.
“Didn't…”
His voice strained.
“Know… there.”
Nora stared.
“You didn't know I worked there?”
He shook his head.
That made sense.
He had been isolated.
The first time she entered his room, his surprise had been genuine.
Then why had she been hired?
Gable.
Brody.
Victor.
They had brought her there.
Not John.
Matteo understood simultaneously.
“Victor placed you inside the house.”
“Why?”
“To see if my father recognized you.”
Nora's stomach turned.
“And he did.”
“Yes.”
The bank lights went out.
Darkness.
Luca drew his weapon.
Matteo pulled Nora behind him.
John's wheelchair bumped the vault wall.
Then emergency lights came on.
Red.
A slow clap echoed from the doorway.
Brody stood there.
Nora stared at him.
He looked thinner.
Harder.
Nothing like the man she remembered.
“Hello, Nor.”
Her voice was ice.
“Don't call me that.”
He smiled.
“I missed you.”
“No, you didn't.”
His gaze dropped to her stomach.
“That's my daughter.”
Nora stepped behind Matteo.
Brody's smile faded.
“Get away from him.”
Matteo spoke quietly.
“You're in the wrong building to give orders.”
Brody laughed.
“You think this is your building?”
A second figure appeared behind him.
Evelyn Gable.
Then a third.
An older man carrying a black cane.
Scar beside his left ear.
Matteo whispered one name.
“Victor.”
John's entire body stiffened.
Victor Moretti smiled at his brother.
“Five years, Johnny.”
John's hand gripped his wheelchair.
Victor looked at Nora.
Then at her stomach.
“Sarah's little girl.”
Nora felt Matteo shift protectively in front of her.
Victor smiled wider.
“You all think this is about money.”
He tapped his cane against the floor.
“It never was.”
“Then what?” Nora demanded.
Victor's eyes settled on her belly.
“The next generation.”
Nora's blood went cold.
Victor reached inside his coat.
He removed a sealed laboratory envelope.
May you like
And smiled.
“Because Brody isn't Lily's father.”
