Chapter 6 - The Bloodline Carlo Tried to Erase

Elena's mother hadn't spoken to her in eleven years.
Now Denise Brooks stood beside Adrian with a gun pressed beneath her ribs.
"Mom."
Denise looked older than Elena remembered.
Her hair had gone almost completely gray.
Fear sharpened her face.
Adrian smiled from across the street.
"Everybody finally made it."
Luca stepped forward.
Marco stopped him.
Adrian lifted the gun.
"Don't."
Luca froze.
Police were nearby, but Adrian had chosen his position carefully.
Too many civilians.
Too many cars.
Too much chaos from the fire.
Elena stepped away from Luca.
"What do you want?"
"You."
"No."
Luca's answer came instantly.
Adrian laughed.
"Still claiming things that don't belong to you, brother?"
Elena turned toward Luca.
He ignored Adrian.
"Stay here."
Adrian pressed the weapon harder against Denise.
"Elena comes with me or her mother dies."
Denise shook her head.
"Don't."
Elena looked at Luca.
"Trust me."
"Absolutely not."
"Trust me."
Something in her expression stopped him.
Elena crossed the street.
Adrian shoved Denise away and pulled Elena toward the car.
Luca moved.
Adrian raised the gun.
Elena grabbed his wrist.
Marco rushed forward.
A shot exploded.
Everyone dropped.
The bullet struck a parked car.
Luca hit Adrian with enough force to send them both onto the pavement.
Marco kicked the gun away.
Police swarmed.
Adrian fought like a man who knew defeat meant everything was over.
It didn't matter.
Within seconds, he was pinned.
Elena crawled toward Denise.
"Mom."
Denise grabbed her.
"I'm sorry."
"For what?"
"For all of it."
At the police station, the truth finally came.
Denise had been twenty years old when Elena was born.
Her father wasn't the man listed on her birth certificate.
It was Carlo Moretti.
Elena stared at her mother.
"No."
Denise nodded.
"I worked at one of his restaurants."
Luca stood across the room.
His expression became unreadable.
Elena looked at him.
"We're related?"
Denise shook her head quickly.
"No. Carlo wasn't Luca's biological father."
Silence.
Luca stared at Isabella.
She closed her eyes.
Another secret.
Isabella explained.
Carlo had been sterile.
Luca's biological father was a musician Isabella loved before her forced marriage.
Carlo knew.
He raised Luca as his own because appearances mattered.
Adrian, however, truly was Carlo's biological child, conceived during an affair with Celeste.
The revelation rearranged everything.
Carlo had spent his life resenting Luca because Luca wasn't his blood.
Yet Luca inherited his empire.
Adrian knew.
That resentment became poison.
Elena asked the question that hurt most.
"Why did Margaret raise me as her granddaughter?"
Denise looked down.
"Carlo wanted you gone."
Elena felt cold.
"When he learned I was pregnant, he said there could never be another heir."
"So you ran."
"Margaret helped me."
Isabella nodded.
"Margaret protected everyone."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"Except nobody ever told me."
Denise reached for her.
Elena pulled away.
"I spent my whole life thinking you left because you didn't want me."
"I left because Adrian found me."
"What?"
"Eleven years ago. He knew who you were. He said if I stayed near you, he'd tell Carlo's old men."
"Carlo was already dead."
"His people weren't."
Elena thought about every unanswered letter.
Every birthday without a call.
Anger collided with understanding.
She couldn't forgive eleven years in one room.
But she could finally understand them.
Adrian was charged with attempted murder, evidence tampering, arson conspiracy, kidnapping, financial crimes, and multiple offenses tied to the shootings.
Then came the records.
His accounts connected him to the studio shooter.
The truck crash.
The theater gunmen.
The fire.
Everything.
Luca could have destroyed Adrian privately.
Everyone expected him to.
Instead, he turned every file over to federal investigators.
Marco questioned him.
"You sure?"
Luca looked toward Elena.
"Yes."
"This isn't how your father handled betrayal."
"I'm not my father."
That sentence spread across Chicago faster than any threat could have.
The Moretti organization changed in the following weeks.
Illegal operations were shut down.
Men involved in violence were removed.
Luca cooperated with investigators even when it cost him money.
Moretti Development's board begged him to return.
He agreed under one condition.
Every project would be audited.
No intimidation.
No forced sales.
No shell companies.
And the redevelopment planned for Elena's neighborhood was canceled permanently.
Elena, meanwhile, had nowhere to paint.
Luca offered space at his estate.
She refused.
He rented a studio downtown.
She refused.
Finally, Marco found an old warehouse two blocks from her original building.
Elena liked it.
"Who's paying?"
Marco hesitated.
"Technically..."
"No."
Luca entered from behind him.
"I knew you'd say that."
"Then why try?"
"Optimism."
"I'll rent it myself."
"It's expensive."
"I have insurance money."
"Not enough."
"I'll figure it out."
Luca looked around.
"What if we become partners?"
Elena narrowed her eyes.
"In an art studio?"
"Community arts center."
She stared.
He continued.
"Your studio. Classes. Scholarships. Gallery space. Local artists. Building stays in your name."
"Why?"
"Because the neighborhood shouldn't need a billionaire hotel."
She smiled faintly.
"But it might need somewhere kids can throw paint."
"Preferably not at me."
"No promises."
Their relationship grew slowly after that.
Not because desire was missing.
There was plenty.
But both carried too many ghosts.
Luca spent evenings with Isabella.
They rebuilt twenty-eight lost years one dinner at a time.
Elena met Denise for coffee.
The first conversation lasted twenty minutes.
The second lasted an hour.
Forgiveness wasn't immediate.
But it started.
Thomas recovered.
Marco complained about everyone making emotional decisions.
Nobody listened.
Six months later, the new Brooks Arts Center prepared to open.
The front gallery displayed one painting.
Isabella at twenty-five.
The portrait that had started everything.
Elena restored it from photographs because the original had been damaged during the theater shooting.
Luca stood behind her while she adjusted the frame.
"You changed something."
"What?"
"Her eyes."
Elena smiled.
"I finished them."
Luca looked at his mother's portrait.
"She looks happy."
"She is."
He turned toward Elena.
"So am I."
"Careful. People might find out."
"I've survived worse."
He kissed her forehead.
That evening, Luca was scheduled to appear before the city council.
He planned to formally transfer several Moretti properties into a neighborhood land trust.
It would cost him tens of millions.
He didn't hesitate.
Reporters packed City Hall.
Elena sat beside Isabella and Denise.
Luca approached the microphone.
Before he could speak, a detective entered.
He whispered something to Marco.
Marco's face changed.
He immediately walked toward Luca.
Elena stood.
"What?"
Marco looked at her.
"Adrian escaped during transport."
The room erupted.
Luca moved toward Elena.
Then every phone in the chamber buzzed at once.
A live video appeared.
Adrian stood inside the Brooks Arts Center.
Behind him were cans of gasoline.
He smiled into the camera.
"If Luca wants Elena's future, he can come watch it burn."
Then someone stepped into frame behind Adrian.
May you like
Isabella.
Her hands were tied.
