# The Police Stopped My Wedding... Then a Pregnant Woman Called My Groom "Daddy"

## Chapter 1 – The Wedding That Turned Into a Public Nightmare (Part 2)

For a moment...

No one said a word.

The only sound inside Saint Matthew's Church was the rain tapping softly against the stained-glass windows.

I stared at the birth certificate application in the police officer's hands.

Father's Name: Daniel Brooks.

The ink looked fresh.

Official.

Real.

My chest tightened so badly I thought I might faint.

Daniel slowly shook his head.

"This isn't possible."

The pregnant woman looked exhausted.

"You've said that every time I begged you to tell the truth."

"I've never spoken to you."

"You lived with me."

"No."

"You promised this baby would never grow up without a father."

"I swear, I didn't."

She laughed through her tears.

"You even picked his name."

Daniel looked genuinely confused.

"What name?"

She answered without hesitation.

"Ethan."

The color drained from Daniel's face.

He whispered almost to himself,

"That's impossible..."

I frowned.

"What is?"

He looked at me.

"Ethan was the name..."

He stopped.

"The name of what?"

"My little brother."

The church fell silent again.

Daniel swallowed hard.

"He died when he was eight."

Only I knew that story.

Daniel had told me about Ethan years ago, during a camping trip under the stars.

It wasn't something he shared with strangers.

Yet somehow...

This woman knew.

---

The lead police officer finally stepped forward.

"My name is Officer Ramirez."

"I'd like everyone to stay calm."

He turned toward the pregnant woman.

"Ma'am, what's your name?"

"Sarah Mitchell."

"And you believe Mr. Brooks is the father of your unborn child?"

Sarah looked offended.

"I don't believe it."

"I know it."

Officer Ramirez nodded.

"Do you have identification?"

She handed him her driver's license.

Everything matched.

Real name.

Real address.

Nothing appeared suspicious.

Then he turned toward Daniel.

"Sir..."

"Would you mind explaining how your name appears on these documents?"

Daniel ran both hands through his hair.

"I can't."

"Because none of this belongs to me."

---

People in the pews had stopped pretending not to listen.

Whispers spread from row to row.

"I feel terrible for the bride."

"I knew he looked nervous."

"Poor pregnant woman."

"Imagine raising another woman's child."

Every sentence felt like another knife.

I wanted to disappear.

My mother stood from the front pew.

She walked toward me slowly.

"Honey..."

I couldn't look at her.

"I don't know what's happening."

She wrapped an arm around my shoulders.

"You don't have to decide anything today."

Daniel heard her.

His face broke.

"Emily..."

I stepped backward.

"Please."

"I just need a minute."

For the first time in four years...

I couldn't bear to look at him.

---

Then something unexpected happened.

The second police officer, Officer Greene, was still flipping through Sarah's notebook.

He suddenly stopped.

"Ramirez."

"Look at this."

Officer Ramirez walked over.

"What is it?"

Greene pointed to one page.

"The dates."

"What about them?"

"They don't line up."

Sarah frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Greene turned the notebook toward her.

"You wrote that Daniel took you to Seattle on March 14th last year."

"Yes."

"And stayed until March 18th."

"That's right."

Daniel's eyes widened.

"I wasn't even in Seattle."

Sarah immediately answered,

"Yes, you were."

Daniel looked at Officer Greene.

"I was in Boston."

Officer Ramirez folded his arms.

"Can you prove that?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead...

His best man suddenly stood up.

"I can."

Every head turned.

It was Ryan.

Daniel's best friend since college.

"We were together."

"Why?"

Ryan pulled out his phone.

"My daughter had heart surgery in Boston Children's Hospital."

His voice trembled.

"Daniel spent four days with my family."

"He never left."

Ryan opened his photo gallery.

Hundreds of pictures.

Hospital room.

Waiting room.

Daniel sleeping in an uncomfortable chair.

Holding Ryan's little girl's hand after surgery.

Every photo carried a date stamp.

March 14th.

March 15th.

March 16th.

March 17th.

March 18th.

Exactly the same dates Sarah claimed Daniel had been living with her.

The whispers stopped.

Officer Ramirez studied the phone carefully.

"They appear authentic."

Sarah stared at the screen.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

She looked genuinely frightened.

Not angry.

Confused.

As if her own memories had just betrayed her.

---

Officer Greene looked back at the notebook.

"There are more problems."

He flipped several pages.

"This receipt says Daniel bought flowers in Denver."

Daniel looked up.

"I've never been to Denver."

Ryan nodded.

"He hates flying."

The officer continued reading.

"Another page says the two of you celebrated Christmas together."

Sarah smiled sadly.

"We did."

Daniel quietly said,

"I spent every Christmas with Emily's family."

Every member of my family nodded.

My father spoke up.

"He never missed one."

Sarah looked around the church.

She suddenly seemed less certain than before.

She whispered,

"I don't understand."

Tears rolled down her cheeks again.

"He knew everything about me."

"He knew my favorite coffee."

"My grandmother's birthday."

"The lullaby my mother used to sing."

"How could someone fake that?"

No one had an answer.

---

Then...

A loud voice came from the back of the church.

"I do."

Everyone turned.

A man in a dark gray suit stood near the entrance.

No one had noticed him before.

He wore sunglasses despite being indoors.

He smiled slowly.

Almost proudly.

"I've always admired good acting."

Officer Ramirez immediately stepped toward him.

"Sir, identify yourself."

The man ignored him.

Instead...

He looked directly at Daniel.

"I warned you."

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

Recognition.

Fear.

Anger.

"You."

The stranger smiled wider.

"It's been a long time, old friend."

Daniel whispered one name.

"Michael."

The smile disappeared.

"Don't call me your friend."

Before anyone could react...

Michael turned and ran.

Officer Ramirez shouted,

"Stop!"

The two officers sprinted after him.

Guests scattered out of the aisle.

Outside...

Tires screeched.

An engine roared.

Then silence.

Officer Greene returned seconds later, breathing hard.

"He got away."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Oh no..."

I grabbed his arm.

"Who is Michael?"

Daniel looked at me with a face I'd never seen before.

The face of a man who knew something terrible had just begun.

"He isn't here because of the wedding."

I frowned.

"Then why is he here?"

Daniel answered in a voice barely above a whisper.

"Because five years ago..."

"...I helped send him to prison."

Before I could ask another question...

Officer Ramirez's radio crackled loudly.

A dispatcher's urgent voice filled the church.

> "All units, be advised... we have a reported kidnapping involving a six-year-old male matching the description of the child who entered the church with Sarah Mitchell."

Sarah screamed.

She spun around wildly.

"Ben?"

The little boy...

Was gone.

The church doors stood wide open.

The child who had called Daniel "Daddy" had vanished without anyone noticing.

Sarah collapsed to her knees.

Daniel looked toward the open doors, then toward the road outside.

His voice turned cold.

May you like

"This was never about me."

"It was about taking that little boy."
