Chapter 11 - A Traitor From His Past

Keene pressed the gun against Daniel's head.
“End the upload.”
Adrian looked at the computer.
“Too late.”
Keene smiled.
“Then Claire dies first.”
Claire remained behind Adrian.
Daniel shouted, “Don't give him anything.”
Keene struck him.
Adrian's expression darkened.
“You've lost.”
“No.”
Keene looked almost peaceful.
“I still have you.”
Marco appeared at the opposite doorway.
His weapon aimed at his father.
“Let them go.”
Keene stared at his son.
“You always were disappointing.”
Marco's jaw tightened.
“You murdered my mother.”
Claire looked at him.
Another secret.
Keene laughed.
“She became inconvenient.”
Marco's hand trembled.
Adrian spoke quietly.
“Marco.”
Marco looked at him.
“Don't.”
The single word mattered.
Marco lowered the weapon slightly.
Keene used the moment.
He fired.
Marco fell.
Adrian returned fire.
Keene escaped.
Claire rushed to Marco.
The bullet had struck his vest.
He gasped.
“I hate that man.”
Adrian almost laughed.
Daniel was freed.
Federal tactical teams finally entered.
Keene disappeared into the hospital.
The uploaded files spread beyond his control.
His empire was collapsing.
But Keene still had one final escape route.
A helicopter waited on the roof.
Adrian knew where he was going.
Claire tried to stop him.
“You just had spinal surgery.”
“Then push faster.”
She stared.
“Seriously?”
“Please.”
Claire pushed his wheelchair toward the elevator.
Daniel joined them.
The roof doors opened.
Wind struck their faces.
Keene stood beside the helicopter.
He turned.
“Ghost.”
Adrian rolled forward.
“No more running.”
Keene raised his gun.
Claire saw it first.
She pushed Adrian aside.
The shot missed.
Daniel tackled Keene.
Both men fell.
The gun skidded away.
Adrian reached it.
Keene looked up.
“Do it.”
Adrian aimed.
Keene smiled.
“You know you want to.”
Adrian thought of Elena.
Daniel.
Claire.
His legs.
Fifteen stolen years.
Then he lowered the gun.
“No.”
Police flooded the roof.
Keene's smile vanished.
Adrian looked at him.
“You don't get to turn me into you.”
Keene was arrested.
It should have ended there.
But as officers pulled him away, Keene looked at Claire.
And laughed.
“You still haven't told Ghost why you really volunteered for his room.”
Adrian turned toward Claire.
Her face went white.
Keene smiled.
“Go ahead, Nurse Donovan.”

The helicopter blades slowed behind them.
“Tell him what you knew before you ever called him Ghost.”
