Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Knew The Missing Pieces

The door handle moved.
Slowly.
Everyone froze.
I could hear my own heartbeat.
The apartment was dark.
The children were in the hallway.
Elise was holding Lily close.
Theodore stood between us and the door.
Daniel had moved silently toward the kitchen counter.
He picked up the heavy metal flashlight sitting there.
A weapon.
Not because he wanted to fight.
Because he expected someone to come through that door.
And that scared me more than anything.
“Who is it?” Theodore called.
No answer.
The handle stopped moving.
For a few seconds, nothing happened.
Then came a knock.
Three slow knocks.
My stomach tightened.
Because they weren’t random.
They were calm.
Confident.
Like whoever was outside knew exactly what they were doing.
Daniel whispered:
“Don’t open it.”
Theodore looked at him.
“You know who it is.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel.”
His grip tightened around the flashlight.
“I have a guess.”
“That’s not good enough.”
Daniel looked at the door.
“It’s someone Nathan trusted.”
The words made the room colder.
Because Nathan trusting someone had become the most dangerous thing we knew.
Another knock.
This time louder.
Then a voice.
“Elise.”
Everyone went still.
It wasn’t Nathan.
It was a woman.
Elise’s face changed.
I saw recognition.
Fear.
Pain.
“Who is that?” I whispered.
Elise didn’t respond.
The woman outside spoke again.
“I know you’re inside.”
Theodore looked at Elise.
“You know her?”
Elise swallowed.
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Her voice barely came out.
“Vanessa.”
The name hit the room.
The woman from the photograph.
Nathan’s secret life.
The person who appeared beside him while he was supposed to be fixing his marriage.
My hands curled into fists.
Theodore looked toward the door.
“His girlfriend?”
Elise looked down.
“I don’t know.”
But I knew.
She knew enough.
The door opened slightly.
Not because someone pushed it.
Because the lock had already been damaged.
Daniel moved instantly.
“Everyone back.”
The door opened.
A woman stepped inside.
She was younger than me.
Maybe early forties.
Dark hair.
Professional clothes.
A face that looked exhausted rather than threatening.
She raised both hands.
“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”
Nobody moved.
Theodore didn’t lower his guard.
“Then why are you here?”
Vanessa looked at Elise.
“I need to talk to her.”
“No.”
Elise stepped backward.
“You don’t get to come here.”
Vanessa’s expression changed.
Guilt.
Real guilt.
“I know.”
“You were with him.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Yes.”
The room went silent.
I felt Theodore tense beside me.
“You admit it?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“I admit I was part of the reason everyone thought the wrong thing.”
That answer confused me.
“What does that mean?”
She looked at me.
“Margaret?”
Hearing my name from her mouth made me uncomfortable.
“Yes.”
“I know who you are.”
“How?”
“Because Nathan talked about you.”
My chest tightened.
“Did he?”
Vanessa nodded.
“He loved his family.”
Nobody believed her.
Not after everything.
She saw our faces.
“I know how that sounds.”
“You helped him leave,” Elise said.
Vanessa looked at her.
“I helped him survive.”
The sentence changed everything.
Daniel stepped forward.
“That’s not what happened.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“You still believe that?”
Daniel’s expression hardened.
“Yes.”
She laughed softly.
Not happily.
“You really have no idea.”
Theodore looked between them.
“What is going on?”
Vanessa reached into her bag.
Everyone reacted immediately.
But she slowly pulled out a folder.
She placed it on the table.
“I brought this because Nathan wanted someone to find it.”
I looked at the folder.
“Why not bring it sooner?”
“Because I was afraid.”
“Of Nathan?”
Vanessa looked away.
“No.”
That answer surprised everyone.
“Then who?”
She didn’t answer.
Instead, she opened the folder.
Inside were printed emails.
Bank records.
Messages.
And one photograph.
I picked it up.
My heart stopped.
It was Nathan.
But he wasn’t smiling.
He looked terrified.
Standing beside him was another man.
A man I had never seen before.
“Who is that?”
Vanessa’s face became serious.
“His name is Marcus Vale.”
Daniel immediately looked up.
The color disappeared from his face.
“You know him.”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“Daniel?”
He looked at the photograph.
“I thought he was gone.”
The same words.
Again.
Like Marcus was someone who belonged in the past.
Someone dangerous.
I looked at him.
“Who is he?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then:
“The person who taught Nathan how to hide money.”
Nobody spoke.
Vanessa shook her head.
“That’s not all.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“He wasn’t teaching Nathan.”
She pointed at the photo.
“He was controlling him.”
The room became silent.
I looked at the documents.
“What does Marcus want?”
Vanessa sat down.
“Nathan discovered something.”
“What?”
She looked at Elise.
“He discovered that the company wasn’t just losing money.”
Theodore frowned.
“What was happening?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Someone was using the company to move illegal funds.”
My heart dropped.
“You’re saying Nathan was involved?”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“Nathan found out.”
Daniel stared at her.
“Then why didn’t he come forward?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Marcus threatened him.”
“With what?”
She looked toward the hallway.
At the children.
“With his family.”
Elise covered her mouth.
I felt sick.
Suddenly everything looked different.
Nathan leaving.
The silence.
The fear.
The threats.
Maybe he wasn’t running away.
Maybe he was running from something.
But there was still one question.
“Why did he make everyone believe he abandoned them?”
Vanessa looked at me.
“Because Marcus wanted it that way.”
The room went silent.
“Explain.”
“He needed Nathan to disappear.”
“Why?”
“Because Nathan was the only person who had proof.”
Daniel stepped closer.
“Where is Nathan now?”
Vanessa looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Nobody believed her.
But then she added:
“I know where he was last seen.”
My breath caught.
“Where?”
She opened another document.
A location.
A date.
A security report.
Theodore read it.
Then his face changed.
“What?”
He looked at me.
“Margaret…”
“What is it?”
His voice was quiet.
“Nathan wasn’t in Kentucky when he disappeared.”
I stared at him.
“Where was he?”
Theodore looked at the paper.
“Chicago.”
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“That’s impossible.”
“Why?”
“Because I saw him here.”
Everyone turned.
“You saw Nathan?”
Daniel froze.
Realizing what he had said.
Elise stepped forward.
“When?”
Daniel looked away.
“When he came back.”
The room exploded with silence.
“You said you didn’t know he was coming back.”
Daniel’s face changed.
“I meant I didn’t know he was coming back tonight.”
Elise stared at him.
“You saw him before?”
Daniel didn’t answer.
“How long have you been hiding this?”
Daniel looked broken.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“No.”
Her voice cracked.
“You were protecting him.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
And all the color left his face.
I watched him.
“Who is it?”
He didn’t answer.
The phone kept ringing.
Then he slowly turned the screen toward us.
One name appeared.
A name that made Daniel whisper:
“He found us.”
May you like
The screen showed:
Nathan Sinclair.
