Chapter 4 - The Secret Behind the Starlight Diner

The man outside disappeared before Ronan reached the door.
They found no one.
Only tire tracks.
Graham refused to explain.
Mirabelle refused to let him leave until he did.
"Who is Daniel?"
Graham stared at the floor.
"Your father."
Mirabelle felt the words physically.
"My father was named Thomas."
"No."
Graham shook his head.
"That was the name Evelyn gave you."
Kellen sat down.
Mirabelle remained standing.
"Daniel what?"
"Daniel Hayes wasn't his real name either."
Ronan looked at Graham.
"Stop speaking in riddles."
Graham sighed.
"Daniel Vale."
Ronan froze.
Mirabelle saw it.
"You know him."
"Everyone in my old neighborhood knew him."
"Why?"
Ronan hesitated.
"Because Daniel Vale disappeared after testifying in a corruption investigation eighteen years ago."
Graham laughed bitterly.
"That's the public version."
"And the real one?"
"He didn't testify."
Graham looked toward Mirabelle.
"Your mother did."
The room seemed smaller.
Evelyn Hayes had spent her life serving coffee, balancing bills, patching school uniforms.
Mirabelle had never imagined another version of her.
Graham explained.
Years earlier, Mercer Development had been smaller.
His father controlled it.
Daniel handled property acquisitions.
Evelyn discovered they were pressuring vulnerable owners to sell cheaply.
She copied records.
Daniel discovered what she was doing.
Instead of stopping her, he helped.
"They were together?" Mirabelle asked.
"Yes."
"And you?"
Graham looked ashamed.
"I helped them."
That surprised Ronan.
"Why?"
"Because my father was destroying people."
Graham had secretly provided documents.
Then everything collapsed.
Someone discovered the leak.
Daniel disappeared.
Evelyn ran.
Graham remained and eventually inherited the company.
"Why didn't you expose everything?"
"I was a coward."
Simple.
No excuse.
Mirabelle appreciated that more than justification.
"And Kellen?"
Graham looked at him.
"Daniel is your father too."
Kellen stared.
"So Mirabelle and I have the same father."
"Yes."
Relief crossed Mirabelle's face before she could stop it.
Whatever secrets remained, Kellen was still completely her brother.
Always had been.
"Then why hide his birth certificate?"
"Because Kellen was born after Daniel supposedly disappeared."
Ronan understood.
"Proof he survived."
Graham nodded.
"Anyone searching for Daniel could use Kellen to find him."
Mirabelle looked at the key.
"What's in Mercer Tower?"
"The original files."
"Why keep them?"
"Insurance."
"Against whom?"
Graham didn't answer.
That afternoon, they entered Mercer Tower through the underground garage.
Level M17 required the brass key.
The elevator descended below the parking structure.
Mirabelle felt Kellen beside her.
Ronan stood on her other side.
The doors opened.
Rows of filing cabinets filled a concrete room.
No computers.
No network.
Nothing remotely accessible.
Graham walked to cabinet seventeen.
The key opened it.
Inside was a red folder.
EVELYN HAYES.
Mirabelle opened it.
Photographs.
Letters.
Financial records.
Then one document changed everything.
Ownership transfer.
Starlight Diner.
Transferred from Mercer Development to Evelyn Hayes.
Mirabelle frowned.
"My mother owned the diner?"
Graham nodded.
"She never knew."
"What?"
"I prepared the transfer after she died."
"Why?"
"Because it was hers morally."
Mirabelle shook her head.
"You don't get to decide that."
"No."
Graham looked at her.
"But I hoped someday you would find it."
Another document showed a trust.
Beneficiaries:
Mirabelle Hayes.
Kellen Hayes.
The amount made Mirabelle sit down.
It wasn't millions.
But it was enough to change their lives.
Enough for Kellen's college.
Enough for rent.
Enough for Mirabelle to stop working every waking hour.
She looked at Graham.
"You had this for six years."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Your mother required that it remain untouched until you discovered the truth yourself."
Mirabelle laughed in disbelief.
"My mother made everything impossible."
Ronan almost smiled.
"That sounds familiar."
Then Kellen found another folder.
"Mir."
He held up a photograph.
Daniel Vale.
Older.
Taken recently.
The timestamp was three months earlier.
He was standing outside Kellen's school.
Mirabelle's stomach turned.
"He's alive."
Ronan examined it.
"Looks like it."
Kellen's voice shook.
"Then why didn't he come home?"
Nobody answered.
Mirabelle searched the folder.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
Evelyn's handwriting.
Daniel,
If you're reading this, you stayed away too long.
Our children deserved better than secrets.
Mirabelle deserves the truth about Ronan too.
Mirabelle stopped.
Slowly, she looked at him.
Ronan looked equally confused.
"What truth about you?"
Before she could answer, the lights went out.
Kellen swore.
Emergency lighting flickered on.
Red light filled the archive.
Then the elevator chimed.
Someone was coming down.
Ronan moved in front of Mirabelle and Kellen.
The doors began to open.
A man's voice came through the gap.
"Mirabelle?"
She knew that voice.
She hadn't heard it since she was fifteen.
May you like
But she knew it.
Her father had come back.
